“Bar food good”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 5, 2013

We ate in the hotel's bar and ordered crayfish soup as an appetizer, then had the pan fried trout. Both were fresh and very good. The bread was also tasty. The service was good.
There is a buffet in the restaurant that sounded great, but we were hungry at 530pm and didn't want to wait till 7pm to eat. This was a good alternative.

I did not stay at the hotel but I just wanted to make an observation. The grounds are beautiful and the old hotel building is classic. My wife and I grabbed a drink at the bar and sat in the lounge rooms that overlook the fjord. A great way to relax and enjoy the stunning views. The lounge rooms are also very beautiful so even if you don't stay here definitely go check out the inside of the old hotel building.

The hotel is never going to suit fans of Sofitels and Travelodges, but if you want a place in a stunning setting with character and a fascinating history, this is it. We were fortunate to be given a suite in the old wooden part of the building with a balcony offering fine views of the fjord and mountains. The public rooms were beautifully furnished with carved items mentioned by other reviewers and the dining room had panoramic views. Dinner on the first night was the most magnificent buffet I've ever seen, with a great selection of seafood. On the second night it was much quieter but the set menu was excellent. Breakfasts were extensive - no danger of going hungry here! The staff were all very friendly and helpful and we were quite sorry to leave.

Room Tip: Try and get a room in the old building if you can.

A beautiful building, in a beautiful place. The food was as good as I've had anywhere. Fell in love with the woodcarving, as did the king of Norway, who commissioned the chap to do up one of his palaces. Class act!

Room Tip: There's mountains on all sides. The rooms we had were in a newly added bit. I'd have liked t...

This is one of the remaining large, wooden hotels of the grand era in Norway. Elegant decor, comfortable and quiet rooms, good service, excellent restaurant. One of the lounges is filled with hand made furniture produced by a local man who's daugher gives historic tours of the area. Lift the bottom in one chair, and you can read how Kaiser Wilhelm sat here just before the begining of WWI. In the US, this chair would be behind glass.

My wife and I wanted a treat ourselves to a few nights' stay at Kviknes. At well over $300US/night along with the views an many glowing reviews both here and elsewhere we figured it is a safe bet. How wrong we have been!

This hotel targets mass tourism. You will invariably see large buses packed with tourists. We had the pleasure of dining in the bar lobby among candles and pastel-colored suitcases. The soup had no sea-food in it and we were informed by the rather impertinent Latvian waiter that it was "Norwegian"-style.

We stayed in the "new" wing. It is styled in neo cracked-concrete with peeling paint. The bed covers have not seen the inside of a washing machine for ages. Toiletries are non-existing. I would go on but to what end? I think you get my drift.

We had a couple of absolutely wonderful surprises. A short distance away from the Kviknes sits the Balestrand Hotel. The views are just as spectacular and the prices are reasonable. The place is quiet, small and cozy. Rooms are way better looking than the Kviknes new wing.
The other nice surprise was a very nice little dining place around the corner (please do yourself a favor and don't waste money at the hotel restaurant). Go to Gekkens instead!

Oh, and I forgot to mention ... At about 5am the buses are loading up tourists for the next destination. And you get to hear the music of suitcases being dragged through the hallways and the world coming alive. How refreshing!

We spoke to other visitors who stayed in the new wing and seemed to have enjoyed their stay. It is significantly more expensive but on the other hand they may have toiletries in the bathroom.

Room Tip: Go the the Balestrand Hotel.
