“Very good atmosphere”

but very slow service! We had to wait 25 min for our drinks on a slow night... The food was great! Nice moose-karbonader and salmon. The cakes homebaked and very good!

“Unique place with character and good food”
Reviewed August 11, 2011

The waiter told us just how long we would have to wait before they could take our order (I appreciated that). Sometimes the service is "down home" (they run out of things), but all the choices were delicious--fish soup, homestyle meatballs, traditional foods, and fresh fruit that was not spoiled by over-preparation (just simple whipped cream globbed on the top). We sat outside both times we ate and enjoyed the view and talking with the other diners.

“A Soup Experience”
Reviewed August 6, 2011

Me snakkast is dual story dinning experience. You can sit outside downstairs, where the kitchen is located or upstairs where the museum of fun collectables are located.

We sat upstairs, arriving about 5:30p, and reviewed the menu. The menu is like a picture book with photos of the food along with a story. There are several types of soups, hamburgers, and fish offered. We asked what the specials of the day were. A young waiter stated "all our food is special". We make it by hand for you.

We decided to have soup and burgers. We asked for chicken soup but it was already sold out. This must be popular choice given the good picture and early non-availability. We settled for the troll and fish soups with a Jazzburger and Elk burger.

The troll soup has a light cream base that is full of sliced mushrooms with diced vegetables -- mostly carrots and onions. There is to be troll in the soup but we did not find one. :-) We understand from the proprietor that they are hard to find in the forest and one of the reasons it is called troll soup. She also stated that the soup take several hours to prepare. We can understand why. The soup's aroma is flavorful and has a rich taste. The vegetables are soft but the mushrooms firm. The soup is served with two slices of multi-grain bread with a thin covering of butter. The bread is delicious (so is the butter). We asked for more and received four more pieces. It did not take long for those to disappear as well. The fish soup was also very good with mostly pieces of white fish and vegetables.

A soup serving is plentiful and arrives in a large, deep bowl for approximately 11Kr (about $22 U.S). This is about average for the area. It makes a good lunch server or a dinner if not too hungry.

The burgers were not too good. This is mostly due to the meat filler that is used. Those that are anticipating a burger, like found in the United States, will be disappointed. The taste and texture is hard to get used to. The cost was approximately 110Kr (about $22 U.S.) which makes it a very expensive meat by-product choice.

The dessert is a different story. We ordered a piece of Grandma's Best cake and The World's Best Dessert. Grandma's cake is an apple based cake that was very moist. The apples in the cake were more sauced than sliced. It was good.

The World's Best Dessert is a meringue-based dessert with yellow cake and a creme filling. This cake goes by several names. One is Kvæfjordkaka, or cake from Kvæafjord, a fjord in Northern Norway. This dessert was excellent. We asked for the recipe which they said they would send via email. We also found a recipe online -- http://en.petitchef.com/recipes/kvafjordkaka-or-norwegian-cream-and-meringue-cake-fid-693626.

In summary, the soup is good at Me Snakkast, along with the desserts. Stay away from the burgers.

“The essence of Balestrand!”
Reviewed July 30, 2011

You just seem to get everything at Me Snakkast. The temperature was comfortable, and we sat outside in the shade, because it was so hot (hot like the waiter at approximately 18-19 years old) outside. We only had to wait for about a quarter of an hour before both of us had our food, and the Fish Soup was delicious. We also had the "White Lady", which the waiter told us that the old lady behind the counter had baked just hours before, and it tasted magnificent, even though it was a bit expensive.
