My wife and I had a most pleasant holiday stay at the Thon Hotel Åsgårdstrand in the period July 24 to July 26, 2014. As "repeat giuests'" to this hotel, we had already in advance selected room 307 with a fabulous view over the Oslofjord. Incidentally, this room used to be part of the Edvard Munch suite. Named so after the famous Norwegian artist ("Scream", "Madonna", etc.). As a young artist, Edvard Munch had a small cottage just a short walk from this hotel. From his place he had the most wonderful view over the Oslofjord and the famous light conditions in this area, making the place very suitable for painters and other artists.
We got to know this hotel in Åsgårdstrand back in 1999. By chance, we ended up in the "Honeymoon Suite" at that visit. The hotel points out that they by now have "Honeymoon Packages" available to guests in any room. This is indeed a "romantic hotel" and very suitable as setting for wedding parties. They are booked up with weddings all through the summer weekends. However, all guests are welcome, and the capacity of rooms is good. Just try to get a "room with a view". That means a nice view over the Oslofjord area. And, not the least : A most fantastic sunrise view. Probably the best sunrise view from any hotel on the west coast of the Oslofjord. So try to to be there on a sunny day with not too many clouds !
Maria and I also would enjoy the Seilet Restaurant. Especially the terrace with a wonderful view of the marina in Åsgårdstrand and the Oslofjord area. Lots of cruise ships and long distance ferries are passing by. The food in the restaurant could have been better and more tasteful. And the service more efficient. However, the summer breeze makes the stay at the terrace comfortable. So it is possible to endure some waiting. We remember some "dull breakfast meals" in the past. This has improved lately, and the selection for breakfast is by now ecellent and promising. Lots of hot food as well. Even "hot milk" or "heisse Milk" which is som important for Germans and continental visitors. This is a popular summer hotel for foreign tourists to Norway travelling "on their own". That means mostly by private cards, but also by motor bikes, by bicycle, etc. It is also easy to get to Åsgårdstrand by public bus transportation.
The reception staff was also this time very friendly and efficient. They have an easy going style, so people are feeling relaxed and comfortable when coming for a holiday stay. They also have good facilties to care for small children. During the winter months, this hotel is a popular place for conference guests with all the required facilities in place.
Åsgårdstrand used to be the first spa resort in Norway with a history dating back to the 1860's. It is comfortable to do the swimming outside in the Oslofjord. Just a short walk from the hotel. During the early 1900's, Åsgårdstrand had four grand hotels with guests coming to stay there for weeks at a time. By now, Thon Hotel Åsgåtrdstrand is the only remaining hotel in Åsgårdstrand. As a spa resort, many would have expected a pool and sauna facilities at the hotel. Unfortunately, this is still not in place. In the summer it is OK to go outside for a healthy swim in the fjord. However, during the winter months a pool would seem a necessity. The hotel should focus on building a pool and a good sauna/steambath on the hotel premises.
A most fascinating hotel at a location with a great history ! Recommended !
