“Lovely place to stay”
Reviewed January 18, 2013

We rented a villa this summer at La Sovana. It is a really lovely property that really makes you comfortable and feel at home. With a rental car it is easy to get to many touristy places like Siena, Montepulciano, Florence, Montalcino and so on. It's in the heart of Tuscany so you can't go wrong.

The pool is lovely and nice after a long day of walking around.

The only downside is that the only restaurant on the property is quite over priced. It is also a set fixed menu every night, so you have to want what is being served. They do post the menu in the morning for sign up. We didn't eat at the restaurant but discovered so many great restaurants in the area, most of them in Sarteano which was only a 5 minute drive.

I would definitely recommend this whether you are a couple or family traveling together, you won't be disappointed. The manager Fiorella is so wonderful and will make sure your stay is as comfortable as possible. If you are missing your pets back home, Kinder (the dog) is often around looking for some love.

My wife and I stayed at La Sovana for 4 nights the middle of October. The rates go down that time of year plus you get a 4th night free. We picked up our rental car at the Chiusi Scala train station and drove the short distance to La Sovana. We were amazed at the size of our upgraded standard superior room with very large bathroom and shower. The olive harvest started the day we arrived and Giuseppe drove us to see the picking of the olives. We also had a nice free winery and tasting tour. We ate at their private restaurant the 1st night and it was so good we ate there all 4 nights. Delicious Florence beefsteak was served 2 of the 4 meals. The location is great for day trips to the close by Tuscany and Umbria hill towns and sightseeing. We could not have picked a better place for our Tuscany vacation!

What a fabulous time we had at La Sovana! Their agriturismo is beautifully situated overlooking their vineyard, olive grove and lovely valley. We received a warm welcome upon arriving and knew we were in for a treat seeing the lovingly restored farm buildings that have been turned into rooms, suites and self-catering apartments. Our Superior double room was large with hardwood floors and beamed ceilings and was filled with beautiful antique furniture and rich textured floral fabrics. We saw several rooms: a room with two bedrooms that would be very accommodating for a family; a suite with a bedroom and seating area and self catering apartments. If renting one of the two bedroom apartments, ask for one that has a view over the vineyard.

The grounds provided that Tuscan appeal with manicured lawns, flower filled terra cotta pots and lots of towering cypress trees. There are many lovely seating areas to read a book, sip on a glass of wine or just enjoy the amazing view.

My husband enjoyed a swim in their large pool which has a jacuzzi right beside it. Regrettably, we were only there one night so did not get a chance to take their vineyard tour (their wine is VERY good) or partake in the many other activities La Sovana offers (bike rental, tennis, boules, or fishing in their private lake). Although the majority of their guests are adults, they have included a play area which is close enough to satisfy the parents and far enough away so as not to disturb the adult guests.

While we were there we enjoyed a very tasty meal outdoors while others ate in the casual elegance of their restaurant surrounded by glass windows.

The restaurant is only open to their hotel guests and the menu is posted outside the reception area so you can sign up at the beginning of the day if you intend to eat there. I would highly recommend it as the food was delicious and we thoroughly enjoyed the wine from their vineyard although they offer others as well. All the ingredients are fresh and homemade and it was a nice touch that they came by with platters for seconds of the pasta and meat courses. The Olivi family, who are the owners, dine with their guests every evening and the night we were there there happened to be very good live music. Father, Giuseppe started the party off and the terrace was filled with people dancing. .

La Sovana is perfectly located to visit Tuscany and Umbria. It is only a few kilometers away from the A1 autostrade, half way between Rome and Florence. Visiting Orvieto, Assisi, Pienza, Montepulciano, Siena, naming just a few, is very easy. A day trip to Florence for the day is easy by train. A prime benefit of staying here is that you can rent a car in either Orvieto or Chuisi and avoid the stress of having to drive in the big cities.

My husband and I arrived at La Sovana not knowing what to expect. Being Australian, we are prepared for almost anything, but la Sovana for 4 days was a fantastic experience. We arrived as strangers and left a firm friends knowing that we will return. Giovannella and Giuseppe Olivi were fantastic hosts. The setting is postcard perfect, everything is easy and comfortable. All done with total Italian chic that flows so naturally. Smiles abound.Fiorella the Manager spoke perfect English which was great - later we met Ricardo Olivi, Giuseppe's son and he was fluent as well. The property is on a vineyard producing red and white wine and olive oil. We were pleased to find out that they exported to Western Australia so that may give you an idea of the quality of the wine as Western Australia is known for really good wine.
Every evening, we chose to eat on the terrace. We were there in August - hot days and beautifully warm nights. Food was delicious, local and very fresh. Of course the wine was perfect with many different types to choose from. Every night, our host, Giuseppe offered everyone a tasting of the four local grappas as a nightcap - it gave us an example of Italian hospitality. He did laugh at the faces pulled at some of the tastes! All the staff and family just smile. It is such a friendly establishment.
We spent our days visiting the local picturesque towns that surround the area rather than sitting around the pool. Mind you, the pool looked better than the ones we have back at home - The towns around Sarteano are so full of history and the lunches we had at local restaurants were sensational and very reasonable. Such a variety of Italian dishes - all beautifully fresh, obviously locally produced and all very yummy.
We went on a tour of the vineyard and cellars at la Sovana which was so informative and obviously world class.
We loved la Sovana because it was just so clean, such easy company, such a beautiful establishment with delicious food and wine. The family were just sensational - I've never stayed anywhere else in the world where I felt so welcome. We are determined to return to continue with our history lessons.

We stayed at La Sovana for 5 nights mid July and were so thrilled about the place that we decided to go back a week later for another 3 nights (cutting short our stay in Puglia).

What we liked most about La Sovana:
- Property: absolutely beautiful, midst their own olive and vineyards; well maintained buildings and gardens, spotlessly clean everywhere.
- Reception: warm and personal, by a member of the family or by Fiorella (who speaks perfect English) who take you to your room personally.
- Rooms: both rooms we had were perfect. We stayed with 2 adults and 2 children and booked a suite: large marble bathroom with walk in shower, master bedroom with large and comfortable king bed, separate room with two single beds for the children. Rooms have airco, a minibar and a flat screen television (2 tv's in our first room) and are spotlessly clean. Only one thing missing: a safe deposit box.
- Restaurant:
we booked the bed & breakfast formula. Breakfast was perfect: small breads, toast, boiled eggs, delicious ham, cheese, yoghurt, butter, fruit, pastries, juice, water on a small carefully set up buffet and coffee/tea served to the table.
If wanted you can order lunch: toast with ham/cheese; caprese; proscuito melone or tuna salad. just let the waitress know at what time you want to eat and they will set it out for you on the terrace.
Although dinner is not cheap (39 euro per person as from 12 years old, excluding all beverages), the Olivi family serves really delicious meals, all with fresh products, accompanied with very good wines of their own produce.
- Pool: nice warm pool, enough sunbeds, chairs and umbrella's. Two minor remarks: the sunbeds are of top quality, but oh so hard (even with the thick double stitched pool towels that are provided), so bring a camping mattress if you want to be comfortable. Secondly: keep your kids away from the folding chairs, we saw some (including our 12 year old) flipping backwards and hurting themselves seriously.

The entire atmosphere of La Sovana breathes luxury and relaxation. It is the perfect place to step back from the hectic and stress of working life. The Olivi family and everyone working at La Sovana are the most hospitable people we have ever met, always around to assist, but never imposing or disturbing your rest.
We had some doubts if our children were going to like the place since they are usually very busy, but the atmosphere rubbed of on them as from the moment we arrived and they were the first asking to go back when we left after the first 5 nights.

Thank you Olivi family, Fiorella and the entire staff for a memorable stay, we will most certainly come back soon!

The simplest way I can describe our experience at La Savona is: You'll arrive as a guest, and you'll leave as family! This place and its people is incredible in every way. I hope everyone who is visiting the Tuscany region will take a day, or five, to visit La Savona. The owners, Giovannella and Giuseppe Olivi, and Riccardo and Daniella Olivi, are among the most hospitable people I've ever met, folks who love to see their guests enjoy their stay. The grounds are most beautiful, the vines are absolutely incredible, and the food is sensational. My wife and I spent 2 nights and 3 days there and it was the highlight of our trip. Be sure to take home lots of wine and olive oil, as their vineyards are of the highest quality. Thank you Olivi's for making our 2012 summer Italy trip a most memorable one! Phil & Jenn Nichols

Room Tip: All the rooms are excellent, a "can't miss"!
