This restaurant is part of the lovely Castello di Spaltenna. We dined outside, and it was a wonderful evening. The food and service was top notch and well-paced. My wife and I had delightful pastas. I recommend the duck tortelli. Creative, simple, and rich flavors.

Some 18 years ago when we first visited Chianti, we dined at Il Pievano without staying at theCastello di Spaltenna Hotel. The quality of the food, service, and atmosphere so impressed us that I made a mental note that next time we visit Chianti we must dine at this restaurant again. I am glad to say that now that we have had the chance to revisit after so many years we find the restaurant can only be described in superlative terms. If it should take us another 18 years to visit Chianti, we will be sure to come to Il Pievano again.

This is the restaurant at Castello di Spaltenna, where we stayed for four nights in Gaiole in Chianti. The surroundings are beautiful, whether service is outside on the courtyard (in fine weather) or inside in the elegant dining rooms. The service, although formal, is friendly and the waiters are very helpful and accommodating. Most of all, the food is world-class up to the standards of the finest Michelin starred restaurants. From the innovative amuse bouche that starts the meal to the fabulous desserts, everything is perfection.

We were staying at the Castello di Spaltenna hotel, but weren't sure about the restaurant because it wasn't particularly highly-rated in TripAdvisor. Now I see that the rating is currently low only because there have only been two reviews so far. But since this will be the third five-star review, perhaps a few more reviews will move it up in the rankings -- because this is an *excellent* fine dining restaurant. The service is amazing -- friendly, helpful, attentive, precise. The cooking was spot on as well. With an amuse before dinner and another before dessert, a simple three course meal -- and we shared dishes for two of them -- becomes a feast. The suckling pig was perhaps the best pork dish we've ever had. The wine list is impressive and huge, but we tried one of the estate's own production, which was quite nice. It's only a minute off the main road through Gaiole, and well worth seeking out. If you get here in daylight, you can have a cocktail on the patio overlooking the wine fields and forest -- a beautiful setting.

The restaurant is in the gorgeous Castello di Spaltenna hotel, an ex monastery with a tenth century church overlooking the Gaiole in Chianti hills. The service was impeccable and friendly - Relais worthy - and the fact that I mention it first shows how impressed I was because the food was remarkable, too. My husband and I had separate tasting menus with accompanying wines from their own production, and are still shaking our heads over how each course surpassed the next, using fresh regional ingredients and perfect flavor pairings. Highlights were the ravioli with goat cheese+Sicilian shrimp+mint+artichoke; chicken liver with red onions+capers+reduction of Vin Santo; and tarte tatin with vanilla and salt. Lovely Chianti pairings to top it all off.
