“Not what we thought”
Reviewed July 13, 2011

When we arrived, there was construction going on in the garden where we were supposed to have our breakfast. The following day, the tap water suddenly stopped flowing when I was in my room washing up. Not sure if it was due to the construction pipings. When I called the front desk to rectify the problem, they did not get back to be when the problem was fixed. Last day of check out, there were charges that weren't spelled out clearly and we were told that it was included in our bill. Dinner was really expensive and not worth the price and the free WIFI that was mentioned is only available downstairs the restaurant before it closes and not in the rooms.

Dear Ed Phua,

we thank you for your review and we appreciate it as we appreciate all the comments from our guests. All comments will help us to improve and to get better and better, but I would like to point out something - just in order not to create wrong impression in other guests:
- when you arrived we apologized for the working under the sail and we immediately informed you that it was something that was to be solved on the next day. And this was it - breakfast and dinner under the sail were not affected at all from the works as the works started after breakfast - stopped at 05:00 p.m. and continued the next day after breakfast to be finished definitively at 01:00 p.m..
I apologize again for it, but when something unexpected happens we have to solve it and we solved it immediately with the minimum inconvience to all the guests;
- when you called the reception to inform us about the problem we said that we will check immediately - and when you came down after 10 minutes we asked if it was ok, because we had found the problem and we had fixed it. If you would have waited another 3 minutes in the room you could have found out that the trouble was solved;
- about the charges: I am sorry I don't know what you are referring to as by every (with no exception) check-out, we first print out the details of the check-out and explain to the guests what they are for. Only if they agree with it we print out the official bill. So I don't understand why you didn't ask at check-out what was not clear enough to you;
- dinner: it includes starters, soup, first course, second meat course with vegetables and dessert. It costs 40 euro/person and we are not here a "Trattoria" or an "Osteria" but we are a castle (with different costs and different menu and location...). You are not forced to have dinner here (and you were told many times, when agencies called for information on your behalf, that this was not a place to come without car), and it was not our problem if you couldn't find a transfer at a suitable price to go for dinner outside.
- wi-fi: your wife was using it for hours in front of the reception and in the courtyard of the castle. How can you think that it is not anymore available if the restaurant closes?? It is also available in the main common areas outside and inside.

I am sorry that you didn't enjoy your stay here, as all our efforts are for a nice stay of all our guests, but I think this was maybe more your fault than ours, and you also gave us a "one" on cleanliness, service and quality of sleeps, where I think that you really cannot say anything about them.

Kind regards,

Maura Marasca

We found the Castello di Tornano when planning our holiday and decided to try it. Truly, a glorius location and special place. Tuscany itself is a super destination where you can take your days at a steady pass and stop and enjoy some of the great tuscan foods. Sienna a must to visit. Coming home to the Castello is a joy. The staff can't do enough for you. A real highlight of our trip. Some of the food menus have western items. I would prefer to have just Tuscan Cuisine but that is a personal taste

an amazing hidden treasure in the heart of tuscany
the staff were more then happy to help or offer advise on anything
and were always keen to hear where we'd been for the day
and recomended some gems
victor was fabulous and the wine tasting was fantastic
we were checkin every bottle every time we went out
treat yourself and have a meal at the restuarant for somethinng
truely italian and tuscan,
the castello is set up a windy gravel road, but that just made
it more exciting that it was hidden away from everyone.
I can't praise this place enough, we had an apartment which was just
fabulous we could sit on the terrace drinking all the chanti we'd just brought
having a fridge is a god send for all the ham and cheese purchased,
and a powerful desent shower we could ask for anything more
there was nothing we needed or wanted from this place
you can do as much or as little as you want
we will be back soon

We stayed in the main castle in Lucrezia Borgia, which is an excellent room. Food is served in the restaurant in the evenings and the chef Manuel is fabulous and a great guy. The wine tasting with Victor was a particular highlight of our whole trip. As well as providing an entertaining hour, he is also very knowledgable on wine in general and for me gave a definitive explanaition on Super Tuscans, which I have been unable to find anywhere!! We plan to return in the future. Oh and the wines produced here are very good, especially the Chianti Classico Reserva.

Close to Siena and the heart of Tuscany but off the main road on their own estate so very private! Beautiful true 1000 year old castle on top of hill (see the lighting at night). Exceptional staff that worked hard to accomodate our vacation must do's. Viktor helped change our reservation twice before our arrival. Even with a wedding on site, they made sure we felt welcome and comfortable. Good advice on sightseeing trips and local villages. Even helped us with a low tire on our rented Fiat. For value and privacy, we chose to stay in the farmhouse (take your own coffee). The view from the small private balcony included sunrise, sunset and a full "Juliet" moon. We could see vineyards almost to Siena. Farmhouse rooms are on 4 levels with small basic bath on first level and bedroom on top level. Highlights of our stay included Viktor's personal private tour of their own vineyards, winery, and literal castle dungeon wine cellar. Our favorite Chianti and Vin Santo in all of Tuscany! The ultimate Tuscany experience was private cooking lessons with their chef, Emmanuel -- pasta, lamb, zucchini blossoms, and Cantuccini. Horseback ride not recommended in August but can be followed by seemingly ice cold water in the unique pool moat. We will return and we will again stay in the Ginestra farm house room!

We stayed at the Castello di Tornano for two nights during our honeymoon with the intention of exploring Tuscany, only we had such a great time we never left the grounds. Staying in the castle itself is an amazing experince, you feel like you've been transported back hundreds of years, the ground are beautiful, and the hot tub on top of the tower had beautfiul views and table and chairs up there made it a great spot for relaxing with wine. The people were very nice and helpful. We were particularly fond of the chef, who cooked us three amazing meals! We realized on our last night we hadn't made a dinner reservation and we were the only people at the Castle that night (it was early October on a Monday night. Sunday night there were a number of other guests, but on Monday we were alone). He graciously cooked us up an amazing meal, complete with the a desert we still talk about (and have unsucessfully tried to re-create!). The castle has a beautiful courtyard where we able to sit and have after dinner wine and relax. We also went horse back riding on the property- through the winary, which was an amazing experience. All in all I would say its a not to be missed experience.

P.S. They made the moat into a pool :)

We stayed in the castle (which is preferable to the outer buildings) and really enjoyed the ambience. We found the location to be central to lots of lovely hilltowns and wineries. They serve dinner on site and although it isn't cheap, the food was fabulous. We really enjoyed the time with the sommelier and the afternoon where he took us on a tour of the entire castle and then we had a wine tasting in the what had been the dungeon (now wine cellar). Rich history of battles fought here. Rooms were very nice and nicely furnished.
