“Certainly one of the most beautiful places we have visited in Tuscany”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 15, 2009

The web presentation convinced us to book our short (3 day) stay in Tuscany at the Antico Podere Marciano, but the reality exceeded the (already high) expectations we had set in the mansion and its location by far. Located on a hill in a densily wooded environment it offers an astonishing view across the Tuscanian landscape, at which we particularly liked the sunsets. Our room in the villa was spacious, absolutely clean and very nicely furnished in modern but local style. My wife and I enjoyed our stay a lot and wished we would have had more time to spend and relax. But we will certainly return to this beautiful place and its friendly and natural owners and hosts.

During our 2-month tour of Europe Podere Marciano was surely one of the highlights. Tucked away off of a long dirt road—so remote you begin to wonder—and clinging to the high point of a hill, appears this lovely, authentically reproduced Tuscan farmhouse with extraordinary views of distant hill towns. The owner, Federica, employed a skilled decorator who has finished each of the rooms and public areas with top-notch furnishings conveying an elegant Tuscan feel. The property is surrounded by lush woodlands, working farms and vineyards. After you arrive and settle in, you’ll wonder how you can ever tear yourself away.

During our week there in July, blooming lilac bushes and an assortment of potted and planted flowers attracted butterflies (and wasps). The huge, stone-lined, infinity pool is gorgeous—flanked by a typical row of cypresses and a waterfall. On hot days Federica brings down cool drinks to be purchased on the honor system. At breakfast you are provided with vast array of bread, cheese and meat options, along with a variety of fruits and cereals, all beautifully presented.

Our spacious room was a suite with a gorgeous canopy bed, an unparalleled view, a large sitting area, stepping down into a hallway with closets (and a safe), a separate toilet room, and a claw-foot tub. Every imaginable amenity is provided, and here we had one of two true king-sized bed during our travels. Our room, as well as the public areas, was softly washed in warm, coordinated colors. We had a lovely terrace with a panoramic view, but unfortunately the hungry wasps (and my phobia) kept us from enjoying it fully. Our room, and several of the others I saw, was elegant and romantic. Twice during our stay the family offered catered dinners (for an extra charge) which were thoroughly enjoyed by the guests. The hosts, Federica and her husband, are extremely gracious and friendly.

Podere Marciano is such a serene, beautiful property that I’m afraid it will be “discovered” and will sell out when I want to return! If you are interested in the Chianti region, particularly the Castellina area, I cannot imagine that Podere Marciano can be beat. From here you can easily visit every corner of the region, including Pisa, Florence, Cortona or San Gimignano.

  • Liked — The property was magical, stunning views.
  • Tips/Secrets — Check out the small towns such as Radda, Castellina, on-the-way places. Eat at Osteria Alla Piazza and Le Vigne. Ask Federica for recommendations. Enjoy plenty of gelatto!

This past May we stayed for 2 nights at the Podere Marciano In Castellina in Chianti. This beautifully renovated stone farmhouse is off the beaten path ( a bit difficult to find), but well worth the trouble. The owners ( english speaking italians) were amazingly gracious hosts, offering beverages regularly, providing meals if desired and available to us no mattter what our need. A breakfast buffet was provided daily with fresh pastries, rolls, cheeses, fruits and meats. The farmhouse was impeccably restored, reflecting a true tuscan feel. The view was breath taking- vineyards, rolling hills with tuscan villages in the distance. Sunsets were spectacular. There is also a large, clear pool with a side water fall. Thanks to the owners, we felt very much "at home" here and look forward to returning someday. Our only regret was that we were only there for 2 days. I highly reccommend this farmhouse.
