“Lovely villa, excellent location”

My wife and I stayed in this villa for one week in June 2013 as part of a touring holiday of Northern Italy in our car. The property is located about 800 metres from the main road up a twisty track on a secluded hill side surrounded by olive plantations and vineyards in the lovely Chianti region of Tuscany. It is positioned about halfway between Florence and Sienna both of which can be reached in about 35 – 40 minutes by car. The owners live close by in a Farmhouse and were very welcoming and helpful and did their best to look after all of our needs. The property itself is very pleasant with a small but serviceable kitchen, two double bedrooms and a modern bathroom with a good powerful shower. It also has the benefit of a decent size swimming pool which although not heated, was warm enough for us to use a few times after a long hot day. The grounds are extremely pleasant and the outlook over the Tuscany countryside is stunning.
There are several decent restaurants within about 15 minutes drive including an excellent one on the way to Piazza and a very good, more modestly priced one at Barberino Val D’elsa. There is also a good restaurant just 5 minutes away on the road to San Donato, just before the first turnoff to the village itself.

Florence is of course well worth a visit but be aware of the fact that like many of the old Tuscany towns, driving is not generally permitted in the historical areas of the city and there are VERY BIG fines if you accidently stray into them. These area are known as ZTL’s (Zona Traffico Limitato) and are quite will marked but beware that your satnav will not be aware of the boundaries and could easily lead you into them. We found the best place to park in Florence was in the underground car parks by the main station (Santa Maria Novella). The simplest way to reach this is via the A1 motorway and the SGC Firenza –Pisa-Livorno main route into the centre of Florence. You will pay a small toll fee for using the A1 but we found this the quickest and safest way to get to the station car park without straying into the ZTL. You will of course have to pay to park and it’s not cheap (it was 1.5 Eu per hour). The city of Florence is glorious and well worth a visit, best to get there early although some of the historical sites do not open until 10.00 a.m. and you need to be properly dressed (i.e. no shorts of skimpy tea shirts) to visit them.

Sienna is also very worth a visit. It is smaller and much more compact than Florence. We also visited the beautiful town of Monteriggioni and a few of the smaller towns.

There is a small but quite well stocked store in San Donato and a much larger supermarket in Castellina in Chianti (about 15 minutes drive). You are of course surrounded by Chianti producers who will provide free wine tasting and sell you as much wine as you are prepared to buy!
We would definitely stay at this property again and would recommend it to anyone who wants to stay in the heart of the Tuscany Chianti region.
