Hotel Palazzo Failla
Ranked #2 of 18 Hotels in Modica
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed April 23, 2012

We stayed at the Palazzo Failla 2 weeks ago, for 4 nights. The transfer from Catania airport takes about an hour, and is undertaken by the hotel proprietor in person..........incidentally, a very friendly and welcoming man, with a warm personality and good sense of humour, so an entertaining journey.
The hotel is great, 4 star, no pool, but nevertheless, a lovely restful place in the centre of Modica Alta, an ideal location from which to explore the town and the area. Our room was impressive with a high ceiling, complete with, 'Trompe D'oile' feature, and French windows onto the balcony, which overlooked a neat little street, no problem with noise though. The bathroom was big and modern, immaculately clean and serviced twice a day, lots of big white towels and other bathroom, 'goodies'. Room servicing was impeccable, with evening, ' turn-down' and chocs on the pillow, Modica being famous for its chocolate, of course.
Reception staff are delightful, charming, and helpful, they speak English, and are great ambassadors for their hotel and region, excellent.
We arrived late on our first night and were recommended to try a local restaurant, 'La Locanda' which turned out to be brilliant, and cheap, even though they had stopped serving new arrivals, and were packed, they welcomed us and set us up a table. It gets better.
Second night we ate at the famous, in-house restaurant, 'La Gazza Ladra', Wow ! We had seen it on UK television, but the reality exceeded our high expectations, superb creative dining, unique.
The hotel coffee bar deserves a mention, it is brilliant, with Sicilian, 'Tapas' style freebies, and the best coffee you can imagine.
Overall our trip was a huge success, we will certainly return, probably this year, for more Modican hospitality, this hotel is famous for all the right things, and deserves to be.

Room Tip: Upgrade by one click, to larger street facing room, ours was brilliant. ( 102 )

Very easy to locate and parking was not a problem in the surrounding streets. Warm welcome and room was ready on arrival, an early arrival. Standard room was clean, basic but had all the required amenities. Pillows were small not very comfortable. Patterned floor tiles gave it a unique style. Breakfast excellent. Restaurant was 1 mins away from the hotel. Expected better in food quality. Wines great. The amazing staff were very helpfull when i asked for a doctor. I would stay at this place again if in Modica.

If you book a junior suite you sleep like in the past times: large room with high ceiling, old beds, everything very nice. The people are kind and very much focused on guests. From the hotel you just walk down to Modica and the many many many churches and domes. Nice and beautiful. Don't select a standard room.

Palazzo Failla has a very welcoming and friendly staff that spoils you with excellent service and a very good breakfast, including the best of coffees and (breakfast) cakes. The hotel has a diversity of characteristic rooms, a cozy bar and in the evening the luxurious breakfast room and garden terrace serves as restaurant La Gazza Ladra (1 michelin star). The hotel lies in the centre of the baroque part of the city (Modica Alta) which has it's own very romantic and pictoresque atmosphere. There are some fine cafe's, restaurants, shops and a cinema. The city centre is quite some steps down. If you don't feel like walking back, you can order a taxi at the reception desk for the way back up, but there is also a bus service going up hill.

We stayed at Palazzo Failla just for one night during our Tour of Sicily.
As soon as you get in, you get the feeling of being arrived in an aristocratic place.
Touches of class and attention to details are everywhere. We were escorted to our room (a standard), which was very nice. Unfortunately it had only a ceiling window. So we ask to move to another one. We were offered a superior room with only a 10 euros supplement. The room was nice, charming and decorated with Sicilian touches (ancien ceramic floors, coloured tissues). Their restaurant was unfortunately closed for week off so we could not try it.
Breakfast was excellent with good local products and pastry level cakes. Definitely recommended!
Do not miss a visit to nearby Ragusa and Ibla!

This hotel is in a very quiet area of town. It is definitely 4-star quality, with a breakfast buffet to die for. The room was very comfortable. The hostess was very helpful. The only minus is that the Wi-fi connection was spotty in our room.

We booked the relax room in the dependance, for a pre-Valentine's weekend. This is the room with the jacuzzi, a couple of blocks away from the main hotel. The room was absolutely amazing - immaculately clean, heated, with great amenities including bathrobes, bathroom slippers, tonnes of channels on the TV, and our very own PC. Even though the room is in a seperate block, the amazing staff are available 24hours, with room service too! The temperatures outside were very cold so to have a heated double jacuzzi waiting was pure luxury, so I would definitely recommend the upgrade! We arrived early in the day, but Manuela still managed to accomodate us, have our room ready, and even offered us breakfast! My husband also emailed the hotel before our stay to arrange a beautiful surprise bouquet, and I have to say it was one of the best I have ever received. Having traveled quite a bit, I have to say that the service in this hotel is one of the best around the world, especially comparing to other hotels in Italy! The staff, Manuela, Paola, the bar staff and the gentleman serving us b/fast, couldn't do anything more to accomodate us. They go completely out of their way to help; getting our luggages, delivering whatever we needed to our room promptly and at all hours, serving coffee when the bar is closed, even coordinating a pizza delivered to our room during a rainy thundery night from the divine pizzeria La Contea, and this was delivered hot and delicious! The hotel even helped us coordinate a day tour to the winery La Planeta, where we spent a day tasting wines and local specialities with a tour guide Viviana who was extremely welcoming an knowledgeable, and even accompanied us back to the hotel herself,as there was a misunderstanding with the taxi driver who was not willing to wait so long!! Even though we never used the service, the hotel owner Dr Failla also offers to pick you up from Modica Bassa (except Sunday), as there are a couple of steps to go down, which can be a bit of a nuisance coming back up! However, it is not as bad as described in previous reviews! Their trattoria was exactly beneath our room which was very comfortable. We ate once and the food was very good. I really recommend a rosticceria (type of bakery), which is located exactly behind the hotel and opens in the afternoon until around 10pm- it is like a local bakery and serves local baked specialities which are extremely good and cheap! If you like local hams and cheeses, definitely try their breakfast as the meats, cheeses and bread are simply terrific, and definitely the best I have had around Sicily and Italy. If I had to find something to complain about, it would be the room charges, for example to have breakfast in room they charge 7EUR, the WIFI which is terribly slow and does not open any webpage except google!, no body lotion as part of the amenities, and the food available from the hotel during the day, which is very limited. Otherwise, the hotel is definitely excellent, and maybe the fact that Dr Failla is present quite a lot creates the cutting edge as regards to service. Please feel free to ask whatever you need even regarding the local area, and once again I would like to thank the staff for making this holiday one to remember forever.
