After an evening flight into Comiso we arrived late and hungry at our accommodation outside Modica - the very special Casa al Castello. Paolo recommended Casaciomod owned by his cousin. 'Cio' for chocolate and 'mod' for Modica. He made it very clear his recommendation was because we would find it open and serving after 11pm and it was good. He was right on both counts.
Other reviews mention the almost deserted carpark which made us wonder if the place was open. An archway opens into a courtyard off which a wine bar and the restaurant lie. The restaurant is in two parts the second of which looks onto a walled garden. We were welcomed quickly shown to one of the few free tables in the inner room and as we looked around the busy rooms all we could see were lots of people relaxed clearly enjoying their food and company. We sank into our chairs and knew the holiday had really begun. A very good nero d'avolo was confirmation.
We had cold cuts antipasto, pizzas, a shared desert and coffee, all with good fresh ingredients well prepared, flavoured and presented, finished off with complementary liqueurs made on the premises. The bill for two including wine was under €40.
We only returned once during our stay as we like to try as many different places as possible when on hols. Some of the other places where we ate promised ( and cost) more but if we were in near Modica again we would make our way to Casaciomod before any of these others. Casaciomod delivered.
A point to note is it is on the outskirts of modern Modica and not in the historic centre. You will need a car to get there. It is neither ritzy nor pretentious. It would be a perfect place finish up a days touring in the Val do Noto or after a day at the beach, if staying in or around Modica.
