“Excellent Hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 9, 2013

My wife and I booked in for a week in April 2013 for a week of relaxation and to see a little of the local area. I'm not going to repeat all of the compliments about this hotel as I'll just say the same: good food, excellent friendly (flirtatious!) & helpful staff, lovely position.

For what we paid I cannot fault the place and we'll be back, although next time we'll hire a car as the Thompson trips were an expensive let down. There's plenty of space on site to park a rental car and we asked and the hotel's happy to let you.

The only downsides are that the (free) Sorrento courtesy bus' times are not well spaced throughout the day and the packed lunches are bland.

Frankly, if that's the worst you can say about a hotel then you're staying somewhere good!

One final warning we got from the management, a taxi back from Sorrento is going to cost €40-50 Euros.

My wife and I spent a 7 day break here in June 2013. Firstly the weather was poor and we were wearing jumpers for the first couple of days. - so much for Global Warming.

The hotel is high up in the middle of nowhere which was perfect for us as we love to get away from noise and bustle. Warning though it is not the place for the infirm as there are numerous steps around the hotel. Most importantly it is adults only mostly served by Thomson UK.

We had a sea facing room in the Annex (444) which was fine for a week but the massive bed did dominate the room. The bathroom was well equipped with a double shower. Towels were changed every day and we had robes provided. The room had a free safe and fridge with water being provided by the maid daily. The balcony was of a good size with a table and chairs.

The service in the hotel was fantastic. All the staff were friendly and everything happened efficiently. If Angelo was running Italy there would be no economic crisis in the country!

The food was excellent and my tip would be to always order from the menu rather than do the buffet. There was enough food for anyone. Being all-inclusive the drinks were free and of a good quality, we certainly found the wine ok but we are not experts.

The pool was freezing (unheated and the bad weather meant it hadn't warmed up yet) but the pool area and gardens were marvellous. Plenty of shade. The drinks service around the pool was continuous.

Now my only reservation. The Thomson entertainment was quite poor. It seems that singing Karaoke style with the words on IPADs is the norm. There was not a song they couldn't murder. When they played they were so noisy you could not converse in the bar. Conversely, the local duo who performed on 2 nights of the week were first class and had the whole bar entertained. Who could forget Fabio?

Indeed my feeling is that Thomson are slow to react to the changing market. Their entertainment was poor (probably cheap too). Their excursions have not moved on - they are too expensive although the 2 local guides were very knowledgeable (Amafi coast and Herculaneum). I got the impression they are still heavily focused on getting their commission. (On a previous trip we made our own way to Pompeii which was about a 10th of the price of the Thomson trip - yet they still maintain that the trains/buses often have lightning strikes - untrue)

Overall we would return to the hotel and I recommend it to any couple who want a classy, quiet location.

Room Tip: We loved the quietness of the Annex

We booked this holiday for our 25th Wedding Anniversary as we wanted something a bit special. We were certainly not disappointed. The hotel is an adults only hotel and after speaking to several guests found that lots had been there many times before.

The hotel setting is breathtaking and I think one of the major selling points of this hotel.

On arrival we were greeted by the maitre de with a glass of champagne. Our room was not available until 2pm but we were escorted to the buffet lunch and made to feel very welcome. The receptionist came to tell us when our room was available which was nice.

Our room was in the annex to the main building and had a sea view which we had not expected. There was also a four poster bed which was a nice touch. The room was very nice with pleasant decor and the bed very comfortable. There are tea and coffee making facilities in the room and a mini fridge. There was maid service every day. There is no iron provided in the room but we had took our own. You can hire an iron and ironing board from reception at a charge of 5 euros per half hour.

We felt that the meals provided were of excellent quality. A breakfast there was a selection of cereals, cold meats, cheese, pastries and hot breakfast as well as a chef who would cook omelets, pancakes, eggs and crepes. Lunch time was a self service buffet usually held at the poolside bar and the evening meal was waiter service where you could choose from a selection of starters and main courses and also help yourself to the buffet tables which had salads, desserts, canapes etc. Afternoon tea consisted of tea/coffee and some biscuits and small cakes.

The service is exceptional from all staff. You are made to feel very special from the moment you arrive by everyone. The staff work extremely hard and nothing is too much trouble. They are always asking if you would like another drink etc which is refreshing.

We used the courtesy bus a couple of times to go into Sorrento. The bus takes about half an hour down steep hills and there is no way you could walk into town. There are various times to chose from where you can get the courtesy bus and we never had a problem even at short notice.

Evenings at the hotel are relatively quiet but this did liven up on occasion. The evening entertainment ends at around 11.30.

There are also various day time activities you can join in with, a large selection of books that guests have left for you to swap with and some board games. We noticed there is also a swap box for toiletries in case you have forgotten something. There is no shop onsite.

The hotel does have a beauty centre where you can have various treatments and massages etc but we did not use this service.

There are many sitting areas at the hotel both in the sun and shade and there was never a shortage of seats. There is a lovely garden area with hot tubs. The waiting staff serve you at your table and on occasion when we went to the bar for a drink, the waiter said he would bring it over.

Overall this is a beautiful hotel and well worthy of its 4* rating. I would definitely recommend this to a couple who want a relaxing, romantic holiday.

Date of Travel 10th May, 2013.

We initially chose this Hotel for its reputation on trip advisor, Thomson ratings and the fact that the Hotel is Adults Only. Added bonus was that the Hotel is all inclusive too.

From the time we arrived at the Hotel until the time for us to leave, you could only have the feeling that it is a very well run Hotel. The staff there are excellent, and one has a feeling that they all enjoy their roles there.

We arrived mid morning, and check in was smooth, and our cases whisked away. We were then told that the rooms would not be ready for us until 2pm, but that we would be taken for lunch. We were then escorted to the poolside by one of the staff and were greeted by the Maitre'd and the Pool Manager, together with many members of staff. We were shown to a table and offered a drink, and invited to help ourselves to lunch.

An excellent start to our Holiday we thought.

Our room a deluxe twin bedded, garden view room was located at the back of the main Hotel. The room itself was not huge, but was spotlessly clean and more than adequate.

Quality and quantity of the food provided was excellent, but a little bland for our tastes. There were theme evenings which were absolutely superb.

Alcohol was of a very high standard with imported spirits included in the AI range. Again, the service at the bar was superb.

Pool was a little small we felt and did not open until 9am in the morning, which is late for us and many other guests too, Cushions on the loungers were a little jaded and need replacing, but that it not a great critisism. Pool towels are provided, albeit that you are only allowed 3 per week.

I cannot single out any one member of staff, as they were all so very friendly, helpful and attentive at all times. Entertainment was low key, but again, very friendly with everyone joining in with the fun.

As the Hotel has many old walls and steps, I felt the need to ask one of the staff what had existed on the site before the Hotel. No one seemed to know. However after some research on the internet, I believe it to have been a very old Monestary.

Hotel itself is in a wonderfully beautiful setting away from the bustle of Sorrento, which is easily reached by the free Hotel shuttle bus, and well worth a visit.

We did two trips, one to Herculanium which was a half day and a full day to Pompeii and Versuvius, and climbed up to the crater. Although seemingly a little expensive, we felt that it was well worth the extra as we had superb humurous guides on both trips.

In summing up, there are many return guests to this Hotel. Would we recommend it? Of course, we are going to return again next year.

Room Tip: As we had not visited this Hotel before, we had no idea of the set up. There are many rooms to chos...

The Nastro Azzurro is 7 km out of Sorrento up twisty, turny roads high in the hills over looking farmlands and mountains with distant views of little villages and the Bay of Amalfi ( Golfo di Solerno ) It is in a lovely setting but not good for strolling about as the roads are too steep and very busy.It takes the courtesy bus about 25 minutes to get into town, depending on traffic.
So while the hotel may be the best in Piano di Sorrento there may be others in Sorrento that are better.
We were unlucky with the weather when we visited in May 2013, and being in the annexe got wet a few times returning from the reception area.
I would echo the good reviews the hotel has got.
The staff are great. The food is good but not excellent and as all the guests are from Britain, it caters for our bland tastes, which was fine by me!
We are considering returning next year but perhaps in September. We wouldn't bother with a sea view but go for a superior room in the main block.

Stayed at this hotel the first week of May with my brothers, sisters and our wives and husbands. There were 11 of us in total and we all thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
Though the hotel is situated a little way out of Sorrento, it is in a lovely quiet location, with the courtesy bus into Sorrento always available for the short trip into town.
We were allocated rooms in the main building, all on the lower ground floor, and each had its own enormous balcony, with outstanding views out to the surrounding mountains and countryside.
The rooms were beautiful and kept spotless by our maid.
Although we arrived late in the evening, the staff had kept the restaurant open for us.
Breakfast and evening meals are served in the main dining room, and lunch served at the poolside. The quality and choice at all meal times was excellent, served at all times with a smile and a friendly word.
The evening entertainment was provided by either a male and female duet and occasionally by an Italian duet. Both were first class, and regret not having taken a note of their names.
I have deliberately kept mention of the staff to the very end.
What can I say that has not already been said by other posters.
They are the most friendly, engaging and helpful staff I have ever met. Nothing is too much trouble to them.whether it be reception staff, dining room staff, food and drink waiters, cleaners, maids etc they are all first class.
To name any one individual would be unfair to the remainder.
I would however give special mention to the Thomson rep, Georgia. She made us all feel so welcome the whole family asked me in writing this review to thank her for everything.
Hopefully some day we will return to the nicest hotel and staff we have ever had the good fortune to visit.

Room Tip: All of our rooms in the lower ground floor were excellent

Lovely location, tranquil courtesy bus provided into Sorrento, a little isolated. The best staff I've ever come across, nothing any trouble, lovely restaurant and poolside bar however pool too cold to get into.
