The Secret Garden Relais
Reviewed September 27, 2011

Our stay at this 18th century mansion was one of a kind. The building is wonderful and authentic, surrounded by a huge garden of fruit trees, quiet and pastoral. Not only you walk this villa as a king, the service is also royal-like, as wonderful Ellina and the owner, Maria, treat you with pleasure like family.
Moreover, The breakfast was nice and there is a swimming pool in the garden, right under the lemon branches. The location is ideal, just a 5 minutes walk from a train station and great restaurants.
We surely recommend this place to stay in while you explore Sorrento, Amalfy, Positano and Pompei.

We were greeted by Elina like old friends, she and the other ladies were so helpful with every query and request, excellent english. A family run B&B in an 18th century listed building within a walled garden and lemon grove in Piano di Sorrento. Check excellent website for offers. The regularly replenished breakfast can be taken in the dining room or terrace. Cereals, bread, cheese, meats, eggs, preserves, yoghurt, danish pastries, coffee, tea etc. Rooms vary in size and facilities. We had en-suite bath & WC, others had showers. We had A.C. & fridge. Electronic safe f.o.c. Towels clean but worn. Pool in lemon grove is small but clean with sun beds, chairs, etc., lovely to cool off after a day sightseeing - not usually busy. 2hrs free use of Internet computer + free WiFi offered. Free one-way transfer was offered when booking early for 7 days, + sample of homemade limoncello and preserves. Discount on bill for cash. Usual airport transfer was offered at 17 € each for 4. It takes an just over an hour by road or rail from Naples. There is an excellent but sometimes crowded electric train service, Circumvesuvia, around half hourly from Naples calling at ~20 stations inc. several excavations e.g. Ercalano, 400m downhill from stn and the Pompei (Scavi) 50m from stn, etc. Timed tickets from tabacs and most stations. 1hr 1.20€, 3.40€ for longer. W/E ticket 3.40 €. Entry to main excavations is 11€ each or 4 site ticket 20€. Sorrento Town is 2 stops beyond Piano at end of line with Info office outside station. To reach Secret Garden from Piano station (8 min) go right out of station, 1st right at street (alley) under tracks, straight on, cross car park at rear of St Michael's Church, and down alley opposite (signed). B&B is on left after bend. Coast is ~15 min from B&B, left, left then right from gate. Take switchback road on right down to the sea or continue for 400m (no pavement) to municipal lift on left (0.50€ return). Lovely shady drinks terrace with great views on the way at cliff top opposite cafe. At the sea, public beach on left and inexpensive cafe on right beyond marina Excellent good value pizza restaurant (evenings only) 3min from B&B, left then right. Take the hourly Vesuvius visit from Pompei (Scavi) station, bus, 4x4 and moderate 20 min walk to crater. Spectacular views. 19€, includes 8€ entry to rim. Excellent all day cruise of Amalfi coast 24€ fron port ticket office in Sorrento. Sea swimming off Capri (showers and food on boat). Visits Positano and Amalfi.

we got to stay in this place by accident (as the b&b which we initially booked for our honeymoon wasn't great at all). but we loved it and maybe one day we will be back. the hosts are very nice and helpful, the atmosphere wonderful - just the mornings were a bit noisy because of work they were doing nearby and street traffic (though the villa is not close to the street). definitely recommend it for anyone who wants to explore Amalfi Coast, Capri and Pompei.

The house and its extensive lemon gardens make you feel that you are in the middle of the countryside when, in fact , you are right in the middle of Piano di Sorrento - and 5 minutes walking from the train station. Piano di Sorrento is great if you want to escape touristic Sorrento and experience a typical Italian town while you are still 5 minutes away from Sorrento by train.

In addition, the relais is located in a old beautiful house with a lot of character and interesting features of the 18th century,

Elina, the manager, is the soul of this relais. With her warm and spontaneous personality, she really makes you feel you are at home. She goes the extra mile to provide you with an excellent service.

it's about 2km from Sorrento, and is not easy to find. From Piano station you follow signs down narrow alleys, but the helpful staff came out to guide us in. a huge wooden gate open onto a large garden of tall straggly lemon trees and vines. the relais itself is up two flights of grand spiral stairs (and our bedroom up one more!). our bedroom was very ladylike pink, not large and with only a velux rooflight-- so don't expect a view, but it did have air conditioning. Self service breakfast, eaten inside, or out on the second floor terrace. The staff are very friendly and keen to help. it's an easy walk to a couple of local, non-touristy restaurants and to the Vesuviana train station. we enjoyed the Secret Garden and would recommend it.

This B&B provided my girlfriend and I a romantic base for a two-day, two-night visit to the beautiful Amalfi Coast area. The staff was very friendly and they placed us in a nice, charming, clean blue-themed room with plenty of space and skylights. There were plenty of things to eat at the buffet-style continental breakfast. The staff was very helpful with letting us use their computer and answering our questions on where to park and dine out.

The B&B itself is kind of a very large apartment occupying the higher floors of a large building in Piano di Sorrento. The building itself is somewhat isolated from the city by a large garden (including a citrus garden that you walk through to get to the entrance) which helps gives it a quiet, almost country feel even though it's in a city. Hence the name "Secret Garden", I suppose.

Get up on the roof terrace if you have a chance, for a nice rooftop view of the town, the mountains, and the Gulf of Naples.

In my opinion, the only problem with this B&B is finding the place, and finding parking. CALL THE MANAGER FOR DIRECTIONS FIRST; DON'T REPEAT OUR MISTAKE, which was to just punch in the street address on our GPS and expect to drive right to the front door. We ended up driving around the alleys (barely wide enough for a small car) of Piano di Sorrento for over an hour, trying to get to the hotel, before we finally parked a few blocks away and hunted for it on foot, asking several groups of locals for directions before finding the entrance. (As it turned out, the alley that the B&B is on is blocked to car traffic.) The B&B will reimburse you for parking in one of the city parking lots.

If you want a romantic stay in the Sorrento area, I definitely recommend this B&B.

Room Tip: The room with the blue decor, where we stayed, was nice.

The hostess Alina was so nice and helpfull. We arrived late at night and she went out to show us the way. Also she was very helpfull by assisting with the Italian Airline, finding out lose bag.
The hotel is very nice located. We had a suite on the roof with a grate view and nice space.
Breakfast could be improved as there were no vegatebles at all.
We will come back should we will be again in the area.
