“A totally amazing experience!!”
Reviewed August 9, 2010

When we booked the villa, we knew it was going to be something different- we wanted something different to celebrate my wife's 50th birthday. You drive down this private very curvy unpaved street until you see Vincenzo, the villa's host and manager waving you down on the street. From there you enter the villa and the view is breathtaking!! We spent July 4th week here and all we can say is WOW. Fantastic views from everywhere. Total isolation...total romance.....This villa has it all!! Really meant for more than two people, we had the time of our lives. The host, Vincenzo, is an expert not only of the area, but of the Gourmet culture of the region. He was kind enough to take us to an incredible gourmet store, for tastings of the best of the best food in the region...a place we could never find on our own. He recommended LOCAL restaurants with incredible food...for a fraction of the price of the tourist places. You had a desire, all you had to do was ask Vincenzo and it was done....La Grotta was heaven on earth!! On our last night Vincenzo recommended us to go to and incredible one star Michelin restaurant. Not only was it gorgeous, but the chef came out to greet us and made sure we had a memorable time. Turns out, he's a great friend of Vincenzo!!

If you are looking for a place to relax, get away from it all if you want, (you can easily hop in your car and get to Positano or Sorrento in 15 minutes), this villa is a place to definetly consider. If you are into the gourmet scene, whether eating out, or cooking your own pizza in the villa's pizza forno, then this villa is very much for you.

I have traveled all over the world and honestly never expected this property could exceed the photos on the website, but it did! As we walked along the beautiful paths leading to the villa and beyond, we were speechless. WOW was the only word we could manage and we must have repeated it a hundred times! I have already booked another three weeks for my yoga retreats next year and cannot wait to return to this paradise. Thank you, Vincenzo, for an experience I will remember forever! In June 2010, we returned to the beautiful Grotta Dei Fichi for a second time. In 2009, nine of my friends and I had spent two wonderful weeks at this lush green villa lovingly built into the side of a cliff high above the sea. We were looking forward to enjoying swimming in the pool during the heat of the Italian afternoon, dining al fresco on fresh pasta, cooking in the outdoor pizza oven and enjoying fresh blood orange martinis on the patio under the moon.

However, this year’s trip was all that plus a gourmet heaven – when we returned we realized many of our pictures were of food. (I guess that’s why my new camera has a “food” setting.)

Vincenzo, the proprietor, arranged several gourmet food experiences for us that we could never replicate outside Amalfi - the ingredients especially those lemons and the people are very special.

One afternoon, two great pizza makers came by scooter from Naples to the villa with the all the ingredients for several fabulous fried pizzas that they made for us on the outdoor stove. They were like no pizza we had ever had - made with the freshest of cheeses, meats, anchovies and Vesuvian tomatoes and all served up street-food style on brown paper. The whole pizza making process by these two colorful characters made for a great afternoon.

Another afternoon, we went to a gourmet shop that served us the creamiest cheeses some topped with local honey, wonderful breads, culatella di Parma and other meats that we had never had before(or since), a sinful chocolate torte, a lemon tort we all wanted to smuggle back on the plane and some great local wines. This was one of the few times we had to say - we can't eat any more.

Another night, a chef came to the villa to show us to make pasta with zucchini. It was so good - the pasta cooks in the serving bowl. Then when the chef heard we forgot pick up some dessert at the market, she disappeared for a few minutes and whipped up some zeppoles covered with honey and pine nuts. Delicious!

Another night Vincenzo made us several pizzas in the outdoor pizza oven and he’s quite a good cook.

Just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, Vincenzo took us to a restaurant built atop an ancient Roman spa that jutted out into the sea. We had an 8-course tasting dinner accompanied by local wines. We had several favorites from Chef Peppe - the orecchiette with shrimp, the local fish with arugula and couscous, meatballs, homemade vanilla ice cream with dark chocolate sauce and fresh hazelnuts and the finale - a walnut afterdinner drink. The tasting dinner was highlight of our trip and great way for us to end our vacation.

We’re going back again in 2011 and have already begun our countdown.

I stayed at La Grotta dei Fichi May 2010 with my family and girlfriend. We had a spectacular time together, and would highly recommend this Villa to anyone. We made a good friend in the proprietor, Vincenzo (who makes a mean authentic wood fired pizza). The Villa is literally carved into the side of a mountain, and the views are most breathtaking. I definitely enjoyed waking up in the AM, opening my bedroom window, and seeing "Li Galli", the three beautiful islands in plain sight of the villa. This place is truly amazing, and the most beautiful destination I have ever been to. Well done.

We stayed at this Villa the last week in April 2010. It is the most amazing experience we have ever had. The pictures on their web site (grottadeifichi.com) are beautiful but they don’t do justice to this magnificent property. If you are looking for a once in a lifetime vacation, a place you will never forget and long to return to, THIS IS IT. It is the ultimate destination for relaxation. The entire property is carved out of the side of a cliff over looking the Mediterranean Sea. The view, (there is NO place there isn’t one, including the bathrooms) is breathtaking. If I had to describe it in one word…Serenity. The gardens and patios outside the villa offer many places to get lost in the beauty around you. If you were to come with 3 or more couples, each couple could find their own private space without seeing the others.

In addition to the Villas extraordinary ambiance is its location. It is central to the best of Italy –Sorrento, Amalfi, Positiano, Ravello, Amalfi, and Capri. We flew into Rome and rented a car. It was an easy 2-1/2 to 3hr drive. Don’t let driving in Italy intimidate you. The Italians are excellent drivers. Driving around Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast was one of our favorite things. A car is a must to fully enjoy your stay at (La Rupe del Pensatore – La Grotta dei Fichi).

Lastly, the villa has two kitchens well stocked with every utensil needed to cook great meals and enjoy casual dining on the many patios. We found this very economical to eating out. But, if you are interested in something a little more unique or personalized, the family who owns and operates the villa offer a wide range of “Wine-gastronomic Experiences” for their guests. They have many to choose from and will accommodate just about any request. They are very proud of the villa and want to make sure every guest has an experience of a lifetime such as we did.

La Grotta dei Fichi is unlike any place I have ever been to. I was there in 2006 and coming back I was still amazed at how beautiful it is!! There were 10 of us and there was plenty of room and very comfortable. Pizza night with Vincenzo is so much fun. The pizza is by far the best ever!!! I would definitely love to go there again in the future.

Words can not describe the experience you will have at the villa. No one has been to heaven and back. But you can do just that if you visit La Grotta dei Fichi.
Heaven awaits.
