“The Most Memorable Place You Will Ever Stay In Your Life!”
Reviewed May 28, 2013

It has taken me an entire year to write this review because each time I have tried, I have been unable to find the words to describe the beauty of this villa which is also known to me as La Rupe Pensatore. My husband and I are Canadians who rented the villa with two friends, one who is from England and another from Australia. They had both been to the Amalfi coast before and knew the villa was in a perfect location to get around the Amalfi coast from.

I recall when inquiring about the villa, we had a concern about the number of steps it would take to get from the entrance to the property to the villa itself. I was informed by the agent I booked with that she'd been there and it wasn't a problem. And it wasn't. It was the photos and description of the villa that drew us to it but in all honesty, we never expected to find the haven of uniqueness and serenity that we did.

Built by the same three men at the direction of the owner over the course of a 30 year period, basically carved into the face of a cliff overlooking the sea, the villa is like nothing you will find anywhere else. And staying at the villa is truly a once in a lifetime experience unless you are lucky enough to visit it again which I hope we can do again some day.

As you walk from one end of the property then through the villa then to the other end of the property along the stone pathway that separates the "cliff" on one side and the gardens overlooking the sea on the other side, you feel like you are in paradise. And you are. You truly are. As you exit the villa and continue walking along the stone path, you'll come to an outdoor bar, a swimming pool, a wine cellar, and various sitting areas to pause and take in the beautiful view. And that view! You see it from every room in the house. Magnificent! And although the weather was unseasonably cool the week we stayed there (3rd week of April 2012) and not suitable weather for swimming, it was still nice to sit at the pool and take in the view.

What also makes the property so special is the beautiful flowering plants you find growing it seems in every nook and cranny as you travel along the pathway that leads to the villa and to the outdoor "rooms" beyond the pool area.

The villa has all the amenities of home - plus more, including both an indoor kitchen and outdoor kitchen, complete with a charcoal grill and a wood burning pizza oven.

Although the villa is private and in a secluded area but not far off the main road, it is only a short drive away to a near by grocery store and some neighbouring restaurants. It is also a great home base to explore the beautiful cities of Amalfi, Positano, Sorrento and Ravello. We also took an easy hour long train ride into Naples for a day of sightseeing there.

We cooked and ate in some nights and other nights ate out. And after busy days of sightseeing, the villa was always a treasure to come "home" to. It was fun to go down the steps and past the lemon grove to the chicken coop each morning to pluck freshly laid eggs from the chicken coop for our breakfast! The fresh mozzarella from the near by mozzarella factory was to die for!

I am so grateful that we happened upon the website for this villa and that we had the opportunity to stay here. Thank you Vincenzo to you and your family for that opportunity, especially to your father who had the vision many years ago to create such a heaven on earth.

The only word to describe this beautiful villa. The breathtaking views are only a part of staying at La Grotta dei Fichi. The family that owns the villa treat you like you are part of the family. This to me is what being in Italy is all about. Vincenzo the host is so accommodating you will leave there feeling pampered. From having a driver for us girls who didn't want to drive on the Amalfi coast, to having his Mother come over to cook for us, taking us to his Mothers favorite ceramic store, checking in on us daily to see if there was anything he could do for us. I could go on and on, you will not be disappointed in this paradise in the cliffs nor it's HOST.

Spending a week at this amazing villa is really impossible to describe to family and friends at home. La Grotta dei Fichi is just as memorable a site as anything else we saw on this first trip to Italy. It will be as lasting a memory as touring The Vatican, marveling at The Pantheon or driving along the Amalfi Coast road in a tiny Fiat. The views from our own villa were as breathtaking as those we saw from Sorrento or Ravello. The superior, personal service of Vincenzo was unexpected and made our experience even more special. Thank you.

La Grotta dei Fichi is an amazing place to spend a week along the Amalfi Coast. It is the most unique and spectacular place that I have ever stayed, perched high above the sea with amazing views of the Sirenuse Islands and the coast. The structure is difficult to describe as every room and space built into the cliff side is so unique. It is laid out horizontally along the cliffs and provides the ability for a group to spread out into the different spaces. The best feature when renting this villa is Vincenzo, who ensures that everything that you need during your stay is provided. He can arrange for all types of excursions, including meals at the villa if you want, and he and his mother are excellent cooks (you must do the Pizza). The service provided by Vincenzo as your host during your stay is unmatched when renting a private villa. I would highly recommend La Grotta dei Fichi.

La Grotta dei Fichi is a unique structure built into a cliff. The sea views from patios and terraces are beyond compare. Vincenzo, owner and concierge, is available to answer questions and make reservations at a moment's notice. The villa's location is perfect, halfway between Sorrento and Positano. Wonderful restaurants are close as well as picturesque small towns.

Our trip to La Grotta dei Fichi was beyond our imagination. As you walk through the from door, the villa awakens your senses. It is a magical place, built into the side of a mountain, with panoramic views of the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Li Galli islands. At every corner, there are new discoveries of natural beauty. It is 300 meters long and divided into several levels with beautiful landscaping, vegetable gardens, sitting areas, al fresco dining, pool and jacuzzi, wine cellar, indoor and outdoor kitchens with wood burning stove. It is an Architectural wonder that balances old world charm with modern amenities.(Wi Fi, Satellite TV, Dishwasher, Microwave, air conditioning etc.)

For my husband's 60th birthday, his request was to have a family vacation with children and grandchildren. We traveled with 7 adults and two children (2 years old and 8 months old). Vincenzo, our host, is extraordinary at assisting in the planning of the trip. His great listening skills and attention to detail are beyond compare. Prior to the trip, we skyped and e mailed to plan what would be the trip of a lifetime. No detail was too small and every request was met with the response "don't worry, I'll handle it. " He even ordered organic milk for our grandson...something not sold in the Italian markets. It was in our refrigerator upon our arrival.

We chose the "That's Sapore"experience. With two children requiring car seats and strollers we thought it was best to take our evening meals in the Villa.( we toured during the day every day except one day when we sat by the pool and everyone had outdoor massages) My husband and his sons are in the gourmet italian food business so we thought this would be a fun way to experience the local food and culture. To say that every meal was a culinary experience is an understatement.

Upon our arrival, we were welcomed with an apertitivo that was so fresh and delicious we felt like we were visiting family. (artisan cheeses, bruschetta, delicate appetizers, prosecco) Vincenzo, his mother and their staff made us feel so welcomed and at home. Every evening, the meals were an amazing event in our day. There was a wonderful wine cellar built into a cave. Although, local wine was included with dinner, my husband and his sons, found it fun to explore and taste the Italian wines in the wine cellar.

The days would start with an alfresco breakfast. Our grandson became quite immersed in our adventure by going to the chicken coup to get the eggs for breakfast and smelling the lemons and oranges in our fruit basket. Coffee's (american, espresso and decaf) would be waiting for us along with toast, eggs cereals and yogurt. One day, Vincenzo brought fresh figs from his garden and Lina, who cooked us breakfast in the morning, showed us how the italians eat figs for breakfast. She toasted delicious italian bread, patted it with butter and sliced the figs on the bread. WOW Simple but delicious.

The dinners were interesting and fun. After a day of touring, we returned to the Villa to find the Michelin Chef , Pepe Guida, with two sous chefs in the kitchen preparing the gourmet evening meal, The outdoor dining area was also being prepared for candlelight dining accompanied by a sommelier. Multiple courses included fried green peppers stuffed with baccala, fried zucchini flowers stuffed with sweet cheese and anchovies, Rice ball with octopus sauce, fried needle fish, Fresh tuna, Shrimps with Caciotta cheese, Ravioli, spaghetti with fresh tomatoes and basil, Amberjack.etc. All pared by the Sommelier did a great job describing with wines. This tasting menu was extraordinary. The whole experience was spectacular...from the beautiful night with the stars overlooking the sea, to the italian background misc, to the tasting of the most delicately made food.... words cannot describe how wonderful it was.

Other dinners included a group cooking class where we were taught to make gnocchi among other dishes. The Neopolitan street food dinner was fabulous. Outdoor musicians performed and we even were given instruments to participate in some of the more festive songs. We danced and ate under the stars right in our own Villa above and overlooking the sea.

And of course, how can I describe Pizza night. Vincenzo arrives with fresh ingredients. He shows you how to make the dough from scratch. If you want, he even lets you help knead the dough...lots of fun. The pizza's are made in a wood burning stove that gets up to 1000 degrees. And then the most amazing pizzas are created. ..Margherita, sausage and broccoli rate, eggplant with pancetta, escarole, just to name a few.

Throughout the week, we were constantly surprised and touched by the wonderful gestures of Vincenzo and his family. My husband liked to inquire about the food traditions of the region. One night he was asking if the region makes Pizza rustica and grain pie for the holidays. The next day Vincenzo walked in with a pizza rustica made by his grandmother and a grain pie freshly made by his uncle. They just wanted us to taste it. Unbelievable!!! These gestures happened all week.

Each day we had day trips planned to Sorrento, Amalfi, Ravello, Positano and Capri. The drivers were professional and knowledgeable and very patient to the logistics involved with traveling with children. We have a lesson in Gelato making, visited a gourmet food market and had lunch with the owners etc..

We loved renting a private boat with Capri excursions. The day was very memorable. Our captain and skipper, Francesco and Antonio, were friendly, knowledgeable and accommodating. We were dropped off in Capri for a few hours of touring, and then picked up to visit and swim in the blue, green and white grottos. Lunch was served on the boat. It was perfect.

Vincenzo is now family. He is a man who is passionate about his work and it shows. There was nothing we could want. Our grandchildren felt at home and looked forward to the loving treatment of him and his staff. We didn't just see the sights we lived it. We really felt part of the local experience. As soon as we landed in New York we all commented how much we will miss our wonderful time at La Grotta Dei Fichi. We can't wait to return on day.
