Highlights - location, amazing view, lovely old house with lots of character. About 10 minutes walk from the centre of the town and overlooking a local swimming area in the sea. Access to a fridge, 2 ring stove & kettle upstairs. Free bus from town centre to right outside the house.

Lows - Visited in the height of summer and it was roasting hot, with no air conditioning. There are fans, but they may not be enough for you! With the windows open, the noise of trucks and buses in the morning would wake the dead... Bathrooms not ensuite.

Syros itself is a very civilized island, but if you're island hopping, I'd say three nights is the max you'd need there.

we stayed for 4 nights, the building was excellent with all the features you would expect from a neo-classical building, antique furniture, high ceilings, big wooden doors and balconys.nancy has created a personable, individual and unique environment. nancy and her two friends were very helpful and informative accomodating us for an extra night. and also looked after our bags when we were waiting for our ferry.
we stayed in two rooms for 45euros per room per night , both were good, if you dont mind a creaky bed then the stay is worth while. the room had fans, no air con and no fridge though unlike other rooms in greece we stayed in.

the location was excellent overlooking the bay of agios nikolaos with a 2 minute stroll down to a platform from which offers excellent swimming in the sea and rub shoulders with the friendly locals.
the main hub of ermoupolis life was 5 min walk away where you walk past the very ornate st nicholas church, the city offers good food, friendly bars, shopping and a bustling port.

the ipatia website is not full functioning but however if you email directly nancy replys very quickly.

We found our stay here disappointing and low value. Although the house itself is an old home with character it had an empty and cold feel. And although we paid more for a private bathroom it was not ensuite and consisted of a tiny closet with little separation between the toilet and shower area. The owner Nancy gave us a cold welcome by complaining that our ferry arrived 1 hour passed expected time making her have to stay up at 4:00 p.m. in the afternoon! There was no room service which she later apologized for but nonetheless did not bother to clean the room. The room itself was spacious but had no fan or A/C making it very uncomfortable at night. All these little annoyances however would have been ok had the price been right. Overall we felt that the price did not reflect what we got and conclude that this was our most disappointing stay during our 2 week trip around the Greek Islands.

For us - staying in a very casual and relaxed guest house with a beautiful view of the sea, right in town (Ermoupolis) and close to the ferry landing - worked well. We stayed at Guest House Ipatia in the Vaporia. Ipatia has a website that is not fully functional but can be found on google. The rooms are spacious, bathrooms good, and the lovely top salon with balcony was a favorite place to hang out and read in the afternoon. Such a nice vibe and cool after a hot day in the sun. Nancy the owner will respond to email and is great at orientation of how and what and where, for the island.

During the day we would take a taxi out to the beaches (we tried four different ones - all good) rent chaises and an umbrella (at Galissas and Kini they were free) drink iced coffee drinks and beer, eat wonderful food at the beach front tavernas, then take a taxi back.

In the late afternoon, early evening we would walk down to the swimming platforms in front of the vaporia section of town and hang out at the bar - very relaxed scene, good music, plenty of families just hanging out and teenagers having fun. Water is crystal clear.

In the evening we would have cocktails at one of the cafes at Maiouli Square. They mix a stiff drink and give you a little bowl of nuts. The square is full of people strolling around and socializing.

Then dinner at one of the absolutely beautiful restaurants around town. The guest house, the meals, the taxis, are all inexpensive and the people on the island that we encountered were extremely friendly and helpful.

If you want a relaxed yet sophisticated place with plenty of greeks. Syros is the place. It was all quite civilized.

Thank Donna E
