Syros was the third of 4 islands that we visited in the Cylades on our honeymoon (Mykonos, Naxos, and Santorini being the other 3) and was my personal favourite.A large reason for my falling in love with the island, and its capital Hermoupolis, is the Syrou Melathron. A restored 19th century mansion, built in a Venetian architectural style, the Melathron is located in the posh Vaporia district. It directly overlooks the bay (which you can actually swim in) and is mere minutes from the beautiful St. Nikolas church, Appolon Theatre (a miniature copy of La Scala in Milan), and the bustling Miaouli square. Our room was average in size, but beautifully decorated. It had high windows, doors and ceilings, intricate plaster mouldings, and fine antique furniture. The bathroom was large and well appointed. The hotel lobby and adjoining salons are tastefully decorated and conjure the splendour and elegance of that bygone era.During our visit, breakfast was served on the rooftop terrace, which provides a stunning view of the city, port and sea, by an actual waiter no buffet. Another nice touch was a plate of fruit awaiting us in our room on our arrival.Of limited capacity, the Melathron has rooms with balconies facing the sea (which we had) as well as rooms facing the back. The rooms facing the sea are noisier then the ones facing the back, so choose accordingly.Overall, the Syrou Melathron is a very sophisticated and luxurious small hotel in a wonderfully unconventional setting. Somewhat off the beaten path, it deserves to be discovered and experienced along with the many treasures the Island of Syros has to offer.
