Went to Malia on the 16th July for 7 nights stay with 5 other girls. The 6 of us arrived at around 11pm local time to be greeted by the owner Manos who immediately demanded 10 euros of us each for the safe and then 15 extra euros for the air conditioning which we refused to pay for (yet he still tried to convince us to pay for!) After 10 mins or so he came up to us with a 'small problem' explaining that somebody had broken the bath in the room we were supposed to be staying in, so we were unable to stay in there until it was fixed, he told us it would take 3 days. He then took us to a 4 bed room, indicating that he would add 2 extra beds into the already tiny room. When asked if we would get a refund for the cost he said no. Also, he then indicated that we would be staying in the room until sunday!! Then he suggested we split into 2 groups of 3 in two separate hotels!! Then when we refused he offered to put us in another apartments and offered to drive the 6 of us in his car!! I said no..6 girls getting into a strangers car at 12 am at night in a foreign country!!! He then stormed off slamming the door shouting that we 'didn't trust him'. He finally paid for 2 taxis' to take us to the other hotel which was an absolute S***HOLE!! There is no way the two apartments cost the same price for our stay! When we arrived we go chatting to other guests who experienced the exact same issue the previous night as their 'bath was broken'. Overall, Manos clearly overbooked at the Real Palace and was not a friendly person to be greeted by on arrival as his attitude was poor. The walk to the strip is also ATLEAST 25 minutes. DO NOT STAY HERE!!
P.s expecting some sort of compensation for the breaking of contract!!

Do not book this hotel because Manos over books and makes you move hotels. We arrived at 11:30 Crete time and we had 2 rooms of 3 booked. He said that the bath was broke in one of our rooms and he would put all 6 of us in a 4 bedroom room and there was no space for two more bed and where was he getting the extra two beds from? we said we would stay in the other room and not use the bath but he refused. At first it was only suppose to be for 2 days but then it change to 6 which was basically our whole holiday. Manos then suggested he would put 3 of us in another hotel and 3 could stay at the Real Palace and we refused to be split up so he said he has two rooms in another hotel (owned by his family) for all of us so we had no choice but to go there which was disgusting, not what we paid for! Manos then wanted to take us to the other hotel in his car which we refused because we don't know who he was and we were in a strange country, it was very late and pitch black and then he started being very aggressive towards us because we said we didn't trust him, why the hell would we? Therefore we got 2 taxi and made him pay for! On arrival at the other hotel, Dimtris, we spoke to other groups and they were all suppose to stay at the Real Palace as well and had the same problem with the 'damaged bath'! He has clearly over booked his hotel in order to give his family's other one business! When we were at the Real Palace we also saw the staff writing good reviews about the hotel themselves so don't trust them! DO NOT STAY HERE AND DO NOT GET IN THE CAR WITH MANOS!!!!!!!

Went to Malia on 9th July with 5 other girls, 6 of us in total, all 18 year olds. We arrived at Real Palace at about 8pm local time after travelling since 5:30am English time. Manos and his wife greeted us and another group of boys and got us quickly booked into our rooms with air con and a safe. We had 2 rooms between the 6 of us on the 2nd floor. Air con and a safe was meant to be 26€ each person per room but he said if we paid 30€ he'd give us free shots with our drinks on a night which we agreed to. We thought we'd been ripped off at first but we worked it out and the deal wasn't that bad.
Our rooms weren't that spacious but we weren't that bothered as we only spent time in the room when we slept or were getting ready. They were tidy and clean when we arrived, we had a towel each and clean beds. The shower was cold most of the time but after spending the day in the sun it was quite refreshing, every now and then you would get lucky with a warm shower. One problem was you only got 1 roll of toilet roll per week for the room, the stuff is like gold dust over there, but it isn't too expensive for a multipack at the super market. I think the maid came 6 out of the 7 days we were there. If we weren't still in bed she'd fold our bed sheets and mop/sweep the floor but nothing else, until our last day when she cleaned the balcony too. Every now and then she'd pick up our pack of cards on the balcony and stack them for us. We had the same towels all week and the same bed sheets. From about 9-10 up until about 12-1am we'd be getting ready and drinking on the balcony playing drinking games with our music playing as were most people. Everyone is quite loud at that time but the staff never complained about anyone being too loud before they went out. You were allowed to buy drinks from the bar and take them up to your room as well. Some nights we'd have a drink at the bar before going out. I think shots were about 2€ and spirit and mixer was 5€ but they were quite big drinks. Coastas would give us free shots with our drinks sometimes as well. The staff were really friendly with us and were happy to help with taxis and telling us where everything is like supermarkets. The food was decent and better than most of the restaurants we went to. There's a pizza place down the road where we got half a pizza and chips for 3€ each and it was probably the best meal we'd had all week.
The strip is about 5-10 minute walk but when you've been drinking its not a hard walk, however I wouldn't recommend walking back on your own, it can be quite scary and the locals and even other tourists can be a bit creepy. When walking home you can still hear the strip but once you're in your room in bed you can hear it at all. There are restaurants and shops on the way to the strip as well as on the strip. We all loved the strip and the deals were decent, usually 2 drinks, 2 shots and a fishbowl for 5 euros each with exceptions of pint glasses instead of 2 drinks or triples instead of 2 drinks, etc. You get grabbed left, right and centre by PRs trying to get you to come in their bars but they're all really friendly and don't usually mind if you say no, they just let you go and wish you a good night! A couple of things about the strip: never go off on your own, always stay with at least one person you know who you can walk back to your hotel with. And, some of the bouncers at the clubs are very dodgy and aren't afraid to start fights if the opportunity arises so try not to get on the wrong side of them. Places I would recommend: Bar One, Heaven, Yiasou, Malibu and Cloud 9. There's a bar man in Cloud 9 who gives you free shots with your drinks so that he can have one too! There's a 24 hour bar just past McDonalds that quite a few workers go to after work that we never went to. We wanted to but ended up forgetting by the end of night. We also never went to Help Bar, where the original fishbowl was created, but we wish we did.
My group of friends didn't do any pool parties or booze cruises or anything because we would have just rather spent our money on the strip but everyone we spoke to that did loved them.
The night guard has a key to let you into your room if someone else has your key and will walk you to your room if needed to make sure you get there okay. He charges 30€ if you take someone back to your room but only because its against Greek law to take people back to your hotel room.
Overall Real Palace and Malia were amazing and I would definitely recommend going!! I would happily go back this week if I had the money, I'd maybe even be happy to work there!

After reading many of the reviews before we left for our holiday I was a bit hesitant of the staff. Would they charge us for dirty towels we hadn't used too? However we arrived at night. 11pm Greek time and the atmosphere at the hotel was rather quiet. I just assumed everyone was getting ready to go out. We had booked a twin, triple and we had another friend in a room of their own (they booked after us) however, manos allowed us to have 3 twins which I feel was really good of him considering someone could well of booked the room he let us have. Therefore he had one room booked but not being used. On entering our room we were hit with this fierce attack of hot air and therefor after saying we don't want aircon we ended up paying for it. Manos said it was €85 for two weeks, we were staying for 10 nights and paid €80. I feel it should of been less. If its €40 for 1 week and €85 for two it should be around €60 for inbetween stays. We went out expecting to have to walk miles, it's about a 5 minute walk. Not far at all. When sleeping in our room, I found myself every night, having to turn the aircon off and put on a jumper. Yes, I slept in a jumper in Malia. So did we really need aircon? The pool area and bar area is clean, very clean and tidy. The room on arrival was clean. We found though that the maid couldn't be more lazy. On returning to our room from sunbathing at the beach on our first day we found that all she did was fold the bed sheet, not even neatly fold, move all our stuff around and brush the floor. She did no cleaning what so ever! Is that really a maid? We had the same two towels for 10 nights. We ended up having to wash them ourselves. Granted we were self catering but I expect clean towels daily. The maid put the sink plug in, when we knew that the thing to pull it back out that was behind the tap itself (one of those modern plugs without a chain thing) didn't work and so therefore we didn't put the plug in, half way through our holiday made us unable to use the sink as we had to wait a Couple of house for the water to drain out of the sink. Not impressed. The good at the hotel was very very good although we ate out a lot two as manos seemed to just make up the prices as he agent along. Having bought a bag of crisps and a drink one say for €4 and the same the next day for €5 you knew he was making them up. Durty nellys was a great Irish bar and restaurant to eat at. And there's gringos and sticky fingers. Be careful everyone tries to pull you in every bar and restaurant until you can't say no. We just had to be rude and walk faster as they approached us. Over all we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the hotel and the staff all except the maid. I think he hotel would benefit from employing someone who actually knows how to clean and be a maid rather than someone who knows how to brush a floor and go through your belongings. The best thing about this hotel is the location, it's away from the strip, allowing you to relax and actually get to sleep whereas a hotel on the strip lets you go to sleep once the strip clubs have shut at 8am!!!

Great hotel so clean pool was great clean and refreshing after sunbathing strip is a little more than 5 min away possible 10 min but you don't notice the time it takes at all manos and the family were so friendly making sure we were ok rang us taxis to go places and our first night out we came back and ran away and his from costas because of the bad reviews but all he wanted to know was whether we had our key and to make sure we got in ok! Would defiantly recommend this hotel great service great atmosphere and so clean and just enough distance between the hotel and the strip so that you can relax the day after the night before!

Words cannot describe how amazing my Malia holiday was and manos and his family run hotel definitely contributed! He has a wife, son, daughter and brother who all help with the hotel and the daughter is the cutest thing!! They're all so polite and do what they can to help you! It's in a perfect location and don't listen to anyone who says the walk from the strip is miles away because it literally takes 5 mins! The pool and bathing area is also lovely and clean and when I stayed there everyone was really lovely :). The beach is about 10 mins away and is very easy to find and is also a nice day to have (I would definitely suggest the water sports!) also you have a rep that comes round and gives you deals! My group of friends did the booze cruise and the waterpark and that was definitely the right choices, both were SO good!! Oh and also don't go to the strip before midnight because it will be dead! And make sure you pre drink... :) I never spent more than 10 euros on the strip and I got absolutely mortal!! Also there's a security guard who has a master key to let you into your room if you don't have the key which is also very helpful! I really loved this hotel. Don't listen to the bad reviews, they'll just be dicks. If you respect manos and his family they will respect you! Have a serious case of Malia blues and want to go back out there, for me a week was simply not long enough!!!
Enjoy!!

If you're heading to Real Palace on a lads/girls holiday, you've really hit the jackpot.

Naturally after reading reviews on websites such as this one I was incredibly skeptical about the staff. I can assure you that we experienced no such trouble, in fact we found the staff (particularly Manos and Costas) wonderfully friendly and helpful. Vlad (the nightly security guard) speaks broken English and it is clear to see why some misbehaving teens abusing the hotel rules may have got a poor reaction from him. His job is to get you back to your room safely and quietly, therefore if you go to your room quietly you, you won't have a problem.

Another point I discovered to be completely unfounded was the distance from the strip. It's a lovely 10 minute walk with supermarkets and restaurants en-route. Absolutely perfect distance and a very simple, straight-forward walk.

As for the hotel itself, the pictures do it no justice whatsoever. You will be amazed upon arrival. The pool is gorgeous and the bar area is surprisingly classy and also reasonably priced, which reflects the hotel generally.

The reason why I've only given four stars is because you're only given one toilet roll per stay and the showers were often freezing. Also £100 went missing from my safe and £80 from my mate's. Our suspicions point towards the maid but obviously we have no grounds for such accusations, I would simply advise you to get a good lock for your suitcase and keep your valuables in there, saves money buying the safe as well. Other things to watch out for is the 30 euro fee for bringing guests back overnight and the fact that you have to pay for air conditioning.

However it is still a big four stars only halted by gentle cynicism. As in life in general, if you're good to others they'll be good to you. Coming from a group of 12 drunken 18 year olds who had an amazing time thanks to, not in spite of, Manos and his staff.
