We booked the holiday last minute and got a reasonable deal on the Fanourakis appartments. We were a mixed crowd of friend (6 of us) and booked through a tour operator that claimed to cater towards this.

The appartment is situated in the old town of Malia. It is very picturesque and has some lovely restaurants nearby. It is only a 5/10 minute walk to Beach Road which is the busy part of town with the clubs and pubs but is completely sheltered from the noise. A down side of that is that it is quite dark and sheltered when walking home at night and wouldnt recommend you make the trip alone.

Appartments in Greece are very basic, this is to be expected but these are very run down. My front door didnt lock, there was no lock on the bathroom door, the varanda was tempremental and had pigeons nesting in it. Out balcony looked onto the back of a youth club basketball court and could be very noisy during the day.

The staff are a bit scary on arrival, we arrived in the middle of the night, were warned not to make noise, ordered to our rooms and told that should we bring anyone back our passports would be confiscated and we would be charged 200 euros (I should add at this point that we were all in our late 20's not niave teenagers!)

There is to be no noise after 10pm as the appartments are near houses, and you may also find youself being chased to bed by the security guard as you make you way home at night.

There is no pool, but there is one only a short walk away which is very nice. It has a bar that serves food and also shows films and has a quiz night, this is open all night.

Malia is great fun, the weather was fantastic and the beach was beautiful but this appartment is to be avoided like the plague. Another friend booked few weeks later and got an amazing appartment for £100 less than us, his bathroom was as big as our whole appartment! (Yanos Manos appartments)
