“Exactly what we wanted!”
Reviewed August 2, 2010

Lu Ellen Apartments was the perfect choice for our group of 20 year olds going to Malia to club.

Good Points:

- Literally about 3-5 minute walk to the clubbing strip/restaurants/bars/town centre.
- Clean place compared to the other hotels we saw when there
- Really nice, friendly, and genuine owner -- was very helpful with helping us rent out quads, AC, directions
- The AC is a 100% requirement. It cost 5 euros a night...worked like a charm.
- The pool/bar area is amazing. It had a huge 50" tv, a nice bar (slightly overpriced drinks, and a wicked swimming pool.
- The security guard, Nicholas. Such a cool guy...if you go there and he's still there, ask him how the Absinthe was; with love from London.
- The rates we got were very cheap! Definitely value for money.
- Good room sizes.

Negative points:

- Noise curphew at 11pm. You can still make reasonable noise, just can't go completely nuts with the volume. However, like I said, the security guard was cool...it wasn't much of an issue.

If I was going back to Malia (unlikely since there are many other places on the list still to go)...this is where I would stay no doubt.

Conveniently located- only a few minutes walk from bus stop, taxis, bars, clubs, shops and restaurants. Mini market on the ground floor. Friendly staff. Generally, our room had pretty much everything we needed.

Am happy we hadnt read those reviews before we booked this hotel, coz we d probably be discouraged. Seems a lot has changed since 2008! I stayed in Lu Ellen from June 20th for a week with 2 gfriends of mine. We had a very spacious room (although not one of the biggest ones- those were taken) on the 2nd floor which gave us a nice balcony. The room was perfectly clean when we arrived and provided most things we needed. Its location is perfect, 2 min walk from all the bars, the taxis, the bus stop n still at a quiet road (if it wasnt for the noisy boys next door, it would be a perfectly relaxed stay!). The staff was very helpful, the guy at the minimarket at the ground floor -who seemed to be in charge of things there- helped us in everything we needed. Generally, very satisfying. We hadnt paid for luxury so we didnt expect such things. what we got was more than we had expected.
Friendly advice: the pool next door is nice, but if u want to go to the beach go for the Hersonissos west ones (much better than those in Malia).

Reviewed July 7, 2008

I was looking for reviews on Lu-Ellen apartments in Malia, before I left on 29th June 2008. However I could not find any in depth reviews on the hotel. Now on my return from staying at the hotel I am leaving this review so others may make an informed decesion.

Lu-Ellen is in the old Malia town, however this is very close to the strip where all the bars, clubs and restraunts are based, but still far enough away so u dont get distuberd from the night revellers, its probably an 8-10 min walk to the strip from the hotel.

No one seems to walk anywhere apart from a few people. The best way to get around the island is on a quad bike or a moped, which can be hired from a Place om the strip called HERMES. This is the one next to the MC DONALDS and not the on at the begining of the strip. They are owened by the same people but the boss is based at the one next to Mc Donalds and he can give you a better price. (make sure to pay for the bike and the 100% isurance price, which means if you crash or if anyone crashes in to you, that you are not liable, to pay for the bike.)

I would say that that the Lu- Ellen hotel is better suited for the younger crowd as it has many people in the early to mid twenties staying at the hotel and alot of the people staying at the hotel are youngsters who have came out to Malia to work for the summer. However saying this, all the people staying at the hotel where very friendly and approachable and there where a few older people in the hotel who got on with everyone.

Just a point to remember if you want a nice quiet holiday then look else where, as Malia is a clubbers paradise....

Now more about the hotel, on arrival depending on the time you arrive, you may get shown to your room by a lady called Maria or if its really late, then you will be shown to your room by the hotel security guard. The security guard has spare keys to all the rooms.

Maria is the lady who works in the shop underneath the hotel called Gemini. Maria is very friendly and her English is good enough to commnunicate with the holiday makers. Maria is your point of contact if you need anything done, The manager is an old man by the name of EDDY, who is just intrested in making money.

When you arrive at the hotel to your room, there will be one bath toilet and one hand towel per person present and you only get one toilet paper roll. Now if your towels get dirty and you require additional towels, then you have to pay 3 Euros per towel to rent them and you have to buy your own loo paper after it finishes.

The cleaners come once a day to change your bin bag and they dont clean anything. Your bedsheets will only be changed once.( we got to the hotel on Friday night and our bed sheets where changed on monday and then remained on our beds for the remainder of our holiday.)

The shower is nasty as it doesn't look like its been cleaned in ages and the nasty plastic shower curtain is hanging on from a few broken hooks...

On my arrrival I was shown to nasty room downstairs, then to a room next door and I finally setteled for room 10, as this was probably the biggest room and had a balcony that faced the front of the hotel. I think most of the rooms come with two single beds in the open sytle kitchen/diner area and a double bed in the bedroom.

***** MAKE SURE TO GET AIR CON.... COS THE NIGHTS ARE VERY HOT AND SWEATY, THIR IS AN ADDITIONAL COST FOR THE AIR CON.******

I would recommend the SPAR supermarket for all your essentials as it is far cheaper then the shop below the hotel and the supermarkert around the corner. The SPAR is situated at the begining of the strip on the left hand side.(ASK ANY LOCAL THEY ALL KNOW IT)

Also you do not get any hotwater in the hotel rooms in the early hours of the morning or later at night and on many occassions I had to take a cold shower before going clubbing. When I asked why there was no hot water during these times, I was told its because if everyone took showers at the same time the tank that holds the water gets empty very quick and hence no hot water and there was nothing they could do about this. The annoying thing is that the time u need hot water u can never get it. I would say all in all, if you are going to Malia for clubbing, drinking and having a good time and you are not to fussed about the standard of accomadation where you stay then the Lu- Ellen is perfect. As its full of like minded youngsters who are out to have a good time.

(A point I forgot to mention earlier that the bald headed security guard at the hotel is very rude and if you come back to the hotel making any noise more then normal he will tell you to shut up and comes across very aggressive. He is a big lad but with no real [--], if you dont mind confrontation and tell him where to go, he will soon leave you alone.)

Would I use Lu-Ellen again, probably not and the only thing that would draw me back to the hotel is the friendly approach of the young workers living at the hotel. These are not workers of the hotel, but youngsters working all over the strip mainly in bars.

Lu-Ellen in my opinion is a badly managed hotel and it does stand out as the bottom end of the markert style hotel,,, I supose you get what you pay for.
