“Another great Club Med holiday!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 7, 2013

This was our 3rd ski holiday with Club Med. Having tried Mark Warner and Ski Esprit in previous years and been disappointed on several levels each time, it is a real pleasure to visit Club Med villages in the knowledge that the welcome will always be warm and professional, the accommodation will be comfortable and well designed, the food will be fabulous and delicious, the entertainment will be low key - there for those that want it but unobtrusive so as not to impose on those that don't. The hotel will be ski-in, ski-out and well appointed for the slopes. The ski service will be great and well organised ... and in-house. Peisey Vallandry is all this and a little bit more. The food, in particular, is so wonderful in this village - fresh seafood every night, an amazing range and variety of freshly cooked dishes. Superb! Ski lessons - delivered by ESF - were great. We had Bruno who literally transformed my skiing. My red runs are now blues, my blacks reds and my off-piste my blacks. Such a nice guy too. Well done to Eric and his team and thanks for a terrific week. PS the entertainments team put on some great shows.

Room Tip: Third floor rooms, right hand side (eg 335) overlook the valley and benefit from the sunset.

This was one of the best Club Med resorts we have been too. Ski in, ski out. Great rooms with masses of storage. Bath and shower. Great Hammam and spa. Really good food. Excellent ski are for all levels. Would go again.

This was our first experience with Club Med. We stayed for a week, the week before Christmas. Apparently the resort was not that full (it was before the french school holidays). We had 2 interconnecting club family valley view rooms. Absolutely wonderful view and very spacious.

I suppose 2 adults and 2 young children can share a room (the sitting area can be closed of and used as a room), but I preferred the 2 interconnecting rooms.

The staff is excellent, and my children loved Mini Club, they literally preferred to stay there than spend time with us.

The ski instructors are excellent and because the ski lessons are spread over a week (both mornings and afternoons), they make an effort to also make it a bit of a guided tour of the mountain ski areas rather than just teaching you the technicalities.

There are 2 restaurants in the resort, we just ate in the big buffet style one. They make an effort to ensure variation, but it tends to get a bit boring. This is for the adults, for young children this is great, they figure out by the beginning of the week what they like and then they are sorted for the week (2 edged sword).

The children entertainment and ski lessons are very good, my kids loved it and could both go up the mountain by the end of the week. The mini club staff are excellent.

The swimming pool area is very nice, but could get a bit crowded at times.

The predominant language is french, and we sometimes struggled a bit, but this is not a major issue, they try and assist.

Room Tip: The Valley View rooms are worth the extra money.

We spent a week just before the Chrismas Eve. The location of resort is perfect for skiers. Within a few minutes of walk, you can get to the Vanoise Express and thus, you can easily get access to the whole Paradiski. And the staff who ran the entertainment shows demonstrated good creativity and passion.

However, the arrangement was aweful on our arrival day and their management really disappointed us. We asked Clubmed to pick us up at Landry train station and arrived at the resort at around 13:00. We were told by the reception desk that our room will be ready for check-in at 15:00, which is fair enough. We therefore sat back and relaxed for a moment at the bar area, took a stroll to the village nearby, arranged ski equipment at the ski shop..... And it came to 15:00, perfect timing! Thus we approached the reception desk again, and were told to wait for another 15-30 minutes as the room has not been ready yet. Fine, we enjoyed another cup of coffee, got ourselves familiar with the facilities that we could enjoy in the upcoming week..... And we got back to reception desk, it was still not ready. Well, we started chatting with the GOs...... Everytime we asked for the status, it was always the same answer until 18:00!

Though we have been waited for 5 hours to get the room, we did not want to spoil our holiday mood. Thus, instead of filing a complaint, we asked the reception to bring this issue to management attention and get us a formal reply. As a 4-star Clubmed, we could hardly accept such kind of poor internal communication. Little bit of improvement could drastically change the guests' experience in this incident.

Firstly, during the whole afternoon, we saw resort guests coming in and check-in smoothly, seemed like we were the only couple being forgotten. However, Clubmed knew that we would arrive early as we booked the transfer service. If it took time to clean-up all the rooms, they should have at least arranged one that could be ready at 15:00. Secondly, it seemed obvious that no one has ever done anything to communicate with housekeeping team or escalate the issue to management, even we checked the readiness of the room for 4-5 times at the reception desk.

But, what really disappointed us was that we never got any reply from any Clubmed staff on this case, not even a note of appology.

We don't think this issue will be addressed by the management anytime soon. So be prepared to encounter similar situation when you check-in.

Been there twice, and look forward to coming back. Great experience overall, good rooms, fantastic ski, great food (except breakfast), nice and helpful staff.

THE RESORT
Peisey is supposedly one of the largest Club Meds, but you certainly don’t feel this - it looks as a few connected chalets, climbing the mountain at various levels. It is located some 45 minutes away from Bourg St Maurice, in a very small village which has only three or four more hotels. It has all the usual spoils of a five-star hotel, including a pool which has an open part. The reception is large, there are a few common areas, including a hall with a fireplace, a sun-lit terrace, and a very lively bar, to mention a few. It also has a concert hall where the shows are taking place every night. The place takes care of kids of all ages, and my friend who arrived with his entire family felt relieved, having found a proper club for each of his three kids. The main entrance is facing a beautifully decorated courtyard, which immediately sets the festive mood upon arrival.

THE ROOMS
I stayed at a regular Club Room and at Valley View Family Room. Both had big balconies, and to compensate for the great view and bigger area of the latter, the former had picturesque meter-long (or even longer) icicles, although the view was non-existent, making the balcony entirely obsolete. The room is very spacious by French standards, and the “separable” area in a family room ads extra privacy if you want to watch a late show or read a book, while your partner is sleeping. The full bath is also very nice, we were taking it every time after the afternoon ski. The linens were immaculate, housekeeping was good and accommodating, storage space – sufficient, and furniture was generally in good condition. Our queen-size bed was made of two beds joined together, which was slightly irritating, but one large sheet almost made up for that.

THE FOOD
Generally, I am never too happy with the buffets, but this was an exception - every night I was able to find at least one delicious main course, which was making my day (or night, rather). The variety was great for dinner, and the quality was very high. I personally would prefer if seafood buffet was at least two nights a week instead of one, and so was the foie gras station (perhaps with more cooks, as the lines were too long). Lunch was always rushed, as you barely have time to have it before hitting the slopes in the afternoon, but the quality and selection were usually quite alright. Breakfast was the biggest disappointment, as you could hardly find anything typical for a European four or five-star hotel – there were no freshly-squeezed juices, choice of fruit was quite limited, there was no fish like smoked or salted salmon or meats like Parma ham (although plenty of it is left in the evening, and I’m sure is thrown out – Club Med, transfer some of it to breakfast, please!) Selection of breads was good, but the croissants somehow were not as fresh as they are in Paris. You can choose either the house wine, which is quite tolerable, or pay extra for better wines. Champagne is rather pricey, so if you’re into it or other expensive alcohol, better bring a few bottles with you - you will most likely not be able to buy it in the village. Snacks before dinner were primarily the sweets for kids, but a very nice and unexpected treat were the hot drinks (including hot wine) waiting at the ski entrance to the hotel for those returning from the ski trips (Club Med, please make sure they wait for all returning groups, not only the lucky ones which come first!!). Bars are usually busy in the evening, with kids queuing alongside their parents - for their non-alcoholic mojitos and non-tequila sunrises. It would help if tips were allowed, as bartenders are sometimes very slow.

SKI
If you’ve come to this place, chances are the ski will occupy pretty much all of your daytime. Make sure you get the group you’re comfortable with (including instructor’s language skills), the place is big enough for a few groups of the same level. The instructors will show you the basic stuff for your level, but do not hesitate to ask, they are usually quite supportive. The one which looks like Asterix (you’ll know immediately) is very demanding, but it’s worth it. The slopes are abundant, make sure to ask your instructor to take the group for a daily trip across the valley. Groups meet at different times to balance the load on the ski lift, more advanced start earlier. And, of course, you can’t beat the convenience of ski in/ski out. There is no skiing on Saturdays or Sundays, so if you want to secure your instructor, make sure to book in advance.

TRANSPORTATION
If you take the ClubMed train to Bourg St Maurice, you’re all set, but waiting for the rest of the group could be quite daunting. If you didn’t book Club Med transportation, chances are that they’ll let you take the bus from the train station, but in case it’s full, you’ll be stuck – taxies have to be booked well in advance. My advice is to book a taxi, and then try to find someone to share - there are always people who assumed that taxis would not be an issue.

APRES SKI
This is “all inclusive” concept, so in principle they take care of you from early morning until late night, with staff doing different shows every evening. In reality, we were always so exhausted every night, that we could barely remain awake for one drink after dinner. There is absolutely nothing to do in the village (apart from souvenir shopping), Bourg Saint Maurice is not offering much to do either, so my advice is to stay at the hotel. If you have any energy left, take part in the show, or at least watch it.

TIPS & TRICKS
- Try to arrive before the crowd, to avoid lengthy check-in lines, which can last an hour;
- To save time and money, share a taxi ride from Bourg St Maurice, make sure to book the taxi in advance;
- Invest time in learning various staircases, which often offer very convenient shortcuts from your room to pool/sauna/ski room/restaurants;
- Rush to get your ski gear upon arrival, to avoid another long line – this is a big resort, and on the arrival/departure day the ski rental station is very busy;
- Get yourself a bottle or two of Genepi – local herbs and honey-flavored grappa, it makes a perfect after-ski drink;
- And, have fun and enjoy the holiday!

This was the best family holiday in over 15years and exceeded already high expectations. To be fair it was helped by the fantastic location.

We were there in August with good weather in a deluxe room with valley views to die for. The food for mass catering was excellent along with a good cote du rhone house red. If anything there was too much with breakfast, mid morning snacks, lunch, afternoon tea, pre dinner snacks and finally dinner. To work it all off we had free unlimited escorted mountain bike or walking tours and one white water rafting session. The mountain biking can be dangerous and my son had to be mountain rescued to the local hospital after a fall but we were well looked after.

Included were good and live entertainment every day.

We have been to over 13 Mark Warner holidays and they don't even come close with their penny pinching ways to save money.The only downside was the lack of English spoken and our kids would not go to their clubs for that reason. Still we hope to go back next year.

ps as for cleanliness you don't see many hotels clean their desktop cooling fans do you. Good attension to detail

Dear Steve,
Wooow, thanks for this lovely review about your summer holiday in Peisey Vallandry. We are delighted to see that you and your family had a great time and enjoyed the Resort location, the quality of the food and the night entertainment.

On a different note, Please note that our GOs do make their utmost to integrate foreign kids with other French guests, nevertheless difficulties may arise when these do not speak a language other than French, due to their young age.

We are looking forward to welcoming you again next year.

Kind Regards.
Your Club Med UK Team.
