“Very good location”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

Have just returned from a week in Flaine. We had an apartment for 6 ( 4 adults and 2 children) which was small but adequate. Kitchen area was ok and having 2 x toilets and 2 x showers was a good bonus. We were on a package with Crystal so bedding was included, but you still had to go to reception to collect sheets and then make your beds. We took our own towels.

We chose to clean the apartment at the end of our stay which you could do in 1/2 an hour if everyone chips in. It is then inspected. The cost of cleaning was expensive so we saved alot by taking cleaning wipes and dishwasher tablets. You are provided with a brush, dustpan and brush and a mop and bucket. There are vacuum cleaners on each floor for all to use.

The swimming pool, sauna and hot tub were all lovely to relax in.

The skiing conditions were great with many sunny days.

We took alot of food and bought essentials like milk and bread. We found this worked well for us all.

Les Terrasses de Veret are next to the slopes , ski lifts and ski school. The best location in Flaine.

Room Tip: We had a first floor apt which worked out to be great as you could get to the room without going thr...

The apartment could not be better placed! Situated at the bottom of the ski slope, just a few minutes walk to your accommodation. Rooms - compact but perfectly adequate, were clean & well equipped, each with its own balcony looking out over the amazing views. The indoor pool was a big hit with the children, as was the sauna & hot tub for me at the end of a days skiing! Worth noting - nothing is supplied, so take dish washer tabs, tea towels, dish cloth, salt/pepper etc. Also sheets not duvet covers as blankets/throws provided. Very good value family block, would recommend to others.

I have just returned from a fabulous week in Flaine with mine and my sisters family all sharing a flat and wanted to quickly write up some feedback. We booked at Les Terrasse Du Veret six months ago without reading the reviews on here and then went into a tail-spin of worry after reading some of the negative comments. However I am pleased to report:
The Very Good
- The location is as good as it gets - only '133 big steps' from the apartment door to the ESF meeting point on the slope (as measured by my eight year old). Add 40m and you are on the Grand Van lift.
- The view from the balcony is stunning.
- The staff were friendly and couldn't have been more helpful. A MV rep was resident in the property who could be contacted by phone.
- Grand Massif is a cracking ski resort with huge amounts to explore.
- ESF were excellent - both my over-confident son and very nervous wife made great progress. The ESF office and meeting point are within one minute of the accommodation.
The Good
- The underground car park was 48 Euros compared to 24 Euros parking in the resort outdoor parking. This was well worth the money as I knew the car was safe and it made unloading onto the lift really easy.
- The pool was fine - I went in a few times with my family and was surrounded by other families having a great time. Some reviews comment negatively about the noise and splashing but ... it's a budget family SC block? It's not David Lloyd. When some teenage lads went OTT on the bombing I asked them to stop ... and they did and said sorry. Problem solved.
- The room was exactly as I expected it to be - a series of utilitarian boxes with some beds, tables, chairs, kitchenette, bathrooms etc in. As its French SC we knew to bring our own nice bedding, fleecy blankets etc to make it like home. When we sat in at night talking and playing cards we drank great wine and good food purchased from the huge Carrefour in Sallanche in the valley. We went there before heading up the hill and would recommend a visit on your way to the resort. The rooms were warm, the water was hot ... what more do you need on a ski holiday?
- The two restaurants we visited were very reasonable with pleasant staff.
- The famous Flaine architecture - their is no denying its a brutalist, Corbusier, concrete, 1970's soviet-era series of rectangles laid on a slope. It ain't pretty BUT for those on a budget who want access to great skiing door-step skiing - it does the job. And you know - I quite like it in a 'fit for purpose' sense.
- The other guests - everybody was uniformly delightful, polite and ready to have a chat. This was probably helped by the excellent ski conditions!
The OK
- many people mention the unheated boot room with its series of interlocking doors. Having now stayed in quite a few ski hotels over the years I would rather know my gear was safe in its own little lockable mini room than stacked with 200+ other people's gear where my boots get separated, get dripped on, skis get moved, sticks get 'borrowed' etc in big mass communal boot rooms. The accommodation was nearly full yet people in the boot room were largely understanding and if you needed to wait for 2 mins for people to get their gear out of their locker - they did. No problem.
The Bad
- The mattress on the bed crucified my back - it was shockingly bad. If you don't sleep you have a bad holiday! Anyway I volunteered to sleep on the sofa bed using the sofa cushions and slept like a baby. We have booked for next year and I'm planning to take my memory foam bed topper in the roof box!
- information - MV need to let people know all the hidden costs like linen hire, the TV remote hire, the local bed tax, the car park costs in a real 'head-line' way. I know that if you dig around you can find them but people don't - and it generates bad feeling on arrival. Almost make it a marketing 'positive' - 'look at our ultra honest hidden costs info' .
- The security deposit - we handed over our card details, we cleaned the room when we left, we got our details ripped up. All OK... Hmmmm ... Their is just that little niggle of worry all week that you are going to get ripped off - we didn't BUT the niggle was there. How to solve this necessary evil I don't know.

Anyway - it was great and the cheapest we could find this close to the slopes. Go!

(Final niggle aimed at Flaine not MV and the accommodation - they need a big push on dog owner education OR a dedicated pooper-scooper street cleaner. Imagine the beauty of fresh white snow with half a dozen dog turds scattered here and there. It felt like it was everywhere!)

Dear Sir/Madam,
Thank you for your positive review and useful comments. We are glad that you had a good stay in our apartments and we hope that you will stay with us again next season. We are pleased that you enjoyed the location of our apartments and the facilities it had to offer.
We note the need for all reservations staff to clearly explain the various optional extras that can be added to the self-catering accommodation, so that guests don’t have any unexpected surprises on site, and now aim to ensure this is always done.
We look forward to welcoming you back to Flaine.
Regards.

We chose Madame Vacances because it was closer to the lifts and had a swimming pool. Check- in was chaotic; the receptionist had very little English and although we have some French it was difficult to understand what we were being asked. Unlike Pierre et Vacances (next block of apartments), which we have previously stayed in, this was not in the same league. You pay for sheets, towels and television. If you want the apartment cleaned at the end of your stay another 70 euros will be deducted. There is no welcome pack in the apartment, unlike Pierre et Vacances. We arrived at 7.15pm on a Saturday night. By the time we had reached our apartment and discovered we needed to provide everything, it was 7.45pm. We were aware the Spar closed at 8pm so dashed to get some basic provisions. There are no cleaning materials to clean the apartment other than a mop and bucket and broom / shovel. There is a hoover for the whole of the landing but this was very elusive. There is no storage for food other than the fridge. We were two people in a 5 person apartment. It would have been very cramped if there had been 5 of us ! Having arrived by air there is no way we could have packed all that was needed.
The ski locker room is a nightmare. It is not heated, there is the odd broken chair to sit on and the corridors are so narrow that opening the door completely blocked the passageway. I am surprised there were no episodes of 'locker room' rage.
There are notices everywhere telling you not to do this or that and if you are found wanting fines will be incurred. The swimming pool was occupied by small children and subsequently very noisy. If you intend to use the pool take a robe and flip flops as the changing areas are not very pleasant.
On a positive note the apartment was clean and warm, the views excellent and there was plenty of hot water. However, by moving 10 yards up the road you can have a much more pleasant experience at Pierre et Vacances with similar vews.
Be assured you will have the apartment inspected before you leave. It was like being at school camp !

Just returned after 5 days at this apartment, was a bit skeptical at first after reading other reviews but went with my gut instinct as seeing the website pics/ location etc i knew it couldn't be that bad
First off all the location is perfect , with main lift and beginner slopes just opposite the apartment,
Views are stunning from the front and back of the complex,
the only negative point is the actual size of the kitchen and storage space in the apartment , BUT this is what its like in most of the resorts
swimming pool and Jacuzzi a perfect bonus after being out on the slopes all day, Staff very friendly ( thanks Niki + Sam )
definitely revisit again with kids, but would probably select a more lively resort if going with friends as not much apri ski

Room Tip: for 4 people pick a 5 room apartment, for 5 people pick a 6-8 room apartment etc

Having read other reviews, we were prepared for the idiosyncrasies of this establishment. We drove so were able to pack our bedding, some food, dishwasher tablets, cleaning cloths, etc. (Underground car parking was essential.)
We booked an apartment for four, giving the two of us a living room as well as our (tiny) double bedroom. The apartment was clean, the kitchenette well equipped and the heating worked well.

The ski locker area could be much improved by providing proper seating instead of the odd chair dotted about and a broken bench seat. The wifi area in reception was cheerless and often chilly - we saw a proper fire in the fireplace only once - on the morning we were leaving and even then they let it go out by mid morning!

On the plus side, we loved the views from our living room, the proximity to the lifts and the ski-to-door location.

Overall we were satisfied with the accommodation - don't expect too much and you won't be disappointed.

Great location, close to slopes and ski school. Booked a room larger than we needed and it was superb with great views. Check in was chaos and they could organise themselves better but once in the room everything was fab. Ok the rooms are quite basic but they frequently are. They were clean and comfortable and most of our time was spent exploring the vast ski area. Would I go back, definitely yes.
