To think this church was carved out of one piece of rock is hard to fathom. The tour is definitely worth it.

Really interesting church. Cut deeply into the stone cliffs of this gorgeous French town - even the kids were enthralled! The square in Aubeterre is a lovely place to have an evening drink and the kids tend to all run around together quite happily.

Great place - the church and the village. Very quiet but plenty of little restaurants to have lunch in. The church is developed to just the right level where you can see the important stuff but not so much that it has been destroyed.

Beautiful village with nice square and restaurants. Great place to sit and people watch. Church was something else, quite amazing to think that in the 12th Century the crusades were fetching artefacts back from the Holy lands and built this subterranean church to house them in, and they built underground into rock!

The underground church of St Jean in Aubeterre is one of the most remarkable unappreciated sites in France. Hollowed out of the cliff face from within, it measures 20 m high, 27 m long and 16 m wide, though even this cavernous space is only part of the original created in the 12th century. Vaut le voyage!
