“Great Stay - TOTALLY RUINED by unacceptable and unbelievable damage claims”
Reviewed September 17, 2017 for a stay in August 2017

A story of 2 halves....

Very important to state that our party of 12 young boys aged 10 - 16 and 2 adults had a fantastic time on our cycling holiday. The location was great and the house really suited us.

Some confusion with the pool alarm that we were told was compulsory but had apparently been turned off by the owners but we all had a great stay.

Our trouble seemed to start after one small accident where a small pane of glass got broken in a door. The door in question had no stopper but opened straight onto a radiator dial that was set at 90 degrees rather than set flat.

We immediately contacted the owner to explain what had happened and fully expected to have to pay for this.....

However, what followed was a series of phone calls and emails where claims against our damage deposit have gone from the ridiculous to the sublime.

The matter has been passed to Trip Advisor to investigate so won't cover all the details but examples include 1 X sheet (£28) 2 x Towels (£36) 1 X Double duvet (£80) !!!

We left this house thinking we had a great time and already planning to come back next year. However we are left with the VERY bitter taste of unfair and totally excessive damage claims that appear to be way of taking extra money from us.

Perhaps this is why the visitors book showed so few visitors this year....

We have passed the matter to TA to investigate as we have no other way of trying to get our deposit money back.

Will update, once they have concluded their investigation.

Management Response
Sep 18, 2017
Dear Darren,

I am very sad that you have felt the need to post this review. We have consistently good feedback from all previous guests (in fact most are return visitors), but we've never had to deal with the house left in such a state, with so much damage (ruined linen, broken table football table, urine-stained mattress, badly stained armchair, maggot infested bins). Nor have we ever had to retain any damage deposit in the three years that we've rented our family house - there are always little bits and pieces which get damaged, but this is part and parcel of having a lived-in home that we put down to standard wear-and-tear, rather than taking from a damage deposit.

I hope you come back to the area, as you are right - it's wonderful for all things outdoors. However, our house is much more suited to families (such as ours) than it is to a large group of teenagers, especially given the quality of furnishings, linen etc.

Kind regards,
Jon & Suzanne

“Superb accommodation in wonderful setting”
Reviewed September 10, 2016 for a stay in September 2016

We had a long weekend here with friends and thought the house was fantastic. The 12 metre pool was a treat, as the weather was really hot so it was great to cool off. The house has everything you could possible need for your comfort. The village itself is quiet, so we were not disturbed by traffic, and there were lots of interesting places to visit in the village and within an hour's drive. Thoroughly recommended!

“Wonderful family holiday”
Reviewed April 11, 2016 for a stay in October 2015

My family and I stayed here for a week- my husband and I and our 2 young sons (4 and 2). The house was beautiful with plenty of space indoors and out and was also very child friendly. The local area is lovely and the house is ideally situated next to the village- 1 min walk from the main restaurant which overlooks the house. The weather in Oct wasn't quite warm enough for pool hanging and we can't really do this with young children anyway so we hired a car and did spend quite a bit of time travelling to the neighbouring villages and towns. We found lots of great attractions to keep the kids amused and we saw a great deal of rural France which was lovely. The owners were very welcoming and helpful and the house is easy to get to know with lots of useful information for guests on the local area. I would highly recommend this property and location for both a family or couple's retreat!

“A wonderful house and a delightful holiday”
Reviewed August 29, 2015 for a stay in July 2015

We had a wonderful three week holiday at Maison Fleurie in July and August 2015 with our extended family.

Our children aged five, three and nearly one enjoyed every minute they could in the beautiful (heated) swimming pool and garden. The house was so delightful that we didn't ever feel we needed to venture further than the local baker, butcher, farm shop and wine cave.

The house was spacious and beautifully decorated and furnished. It was also well equipped with comfy beds, fresh linen and bath & beach towels, crockery and utensils in the kitchen, and cosy living quarters with a wealth of information on the local area, which the owners had thoughtfully prepared.

In Aubeterre, we loved the pottery shops, ice cream parlour and Sunday market in particular. When we needed a change of scene from the pool, we would enjoy the two minute drive to the river beach (with the car laden with picnics, buckets & spades, sun umbrellas, bicycles...). The children swam in the river, built sandcastles and played in the play park on the river beach. Our eldest child even tried a spot of kayaking, whilst our three year old learned to ride a bike for the first time. Further afield our day trips to Bourdeilles castle and the underground caves at Villars were well worth the hour's drive.

We had a very memorable family holiday, which all three generations enjoyed immensely. We would love to return again next year.

“AN EXCELLENT HOLIDAY”
Reviewed August 1, 2015 for a stay in July 2015

We had a wonderful holiday at Suzanne and Jon's Maison Fleurie from July 5th
to July 26th 2015 It was perfect for the whole family-grandparents,children and grandchildren as was the weather -an average of 85F

Janine and Jurgen, the caretakers, are lovely people and were very helpful to us.They are both English

The House has great rooms-large with high ceilings.
Two sitting rooms,a dining room with a table, which can seat at least 16,
a very well equipped kitchen, four bedrooms with very comfortable beds and beautiful linen,a great bathroom with bath and shower and a further separate toilet
The large balcony is ideal for outside dining and overlooks the pool and countryside
down to the river-altogether perfect

The self contained Annex downstairs is equally lovely-sitting room, dining room.two bedrooms,a wet room and a separate toilet-just right for the grandparents ie us!
The patio outside is right next to the pool

The Pool-
It is the largest pool we have ever had and it is heated to 26% C!
Everyone really enjoyed it in particular the grandchildren who spent
hours in it

The Gardens
There is a beautiful garden surrounding the pool and an adjoining large
garden for games etc
At one corner is a large covered BBQ-the domain of our son-in law!

Garage
This is an internal games room with table football
and table tennis
Excellent for wet days-not that we had any at all!

A short walk away
The ancient streets of Aubeterre with a lovely square with shops
and restaurants,the underground church-quite remarkable-we attended
a concert there which was truly uplifting
The Dronne river has a sandy beach with a children's play area and a bar/restaurant
for the hungry and thirsty-it has a good wine list. You can hire canoes

Restaurants
We loved La Taverne which is across from the house-the first time I had a perfectly cooked
Magret de Canard with green beans and Charlotte a Sole Meuniere-also perfect
The grandchildren were well catered for -our granddaughter,Maisy who is 6,only eats
fish so fish fingers and frites was well received
The steaks, lamb chops etc were also very good
Excellent wine list from Patron's wine cellar
There are many other restaurants in particular Morel's,a gourmet experience at a reasonable price, in the Hotel Du Perigord just down the road,a pizza parlour and takeaway and creperies in the square as is the Brasserie with very good hamburgers

Things to do in surrounding area
St Aulaye close by also has a sandy beach and river swimming and children's playground, cafe
and large swimming pool
Poltrot at Nabinaud is an adventure play ground for all ages
Riberac market on a Friday is huge and is will worth a visit as is Chalais's
more local farmers' market on Mondays
Aubeterre has a small market on Sunday's
The reproduction neolithic paintings at the Grotte De Lascaux II at Montignac are a bit further away-reproductions
of paintings are shown to preserve the originals
The lakes at La Jemaye and Parcoul are worth a trip if children are restless which ours were
certainly not with all the local activities
Perigueux and Brantome are the larger towns-we really enjoyed them both

Wine
Bergerac and St Emilion to the south have many wonderful vineyards and,of course, the Gironde/Medoc to
the west of Bordeaux is the home of the great Chateaux -Margaux,Lafite-Rothschild,Petrus etc

Maison Fleurie and its surrounding area gave us one of our best holidays yet
We are planning to return next year

“A stunning setting and all home comforts”
Reviewed December 30, 2014 for a stay in October 2014

We stayed for ten days, and wished that we had booked in for longer so enchanted we were by the house and it's setting. The house is more spacious than it looks from the outside, is tastefully furnished and very comfortable. We spent a good deal of our time relaxing on the terrace above the pool, which spends much of the day in sunshine. The owner appears to have thought of everything, from ample crockery and cutlery to guides to the local restaurants and places of interest. We enjoyed the stroll up the hill each morning to the bakery, although we were caught out by its closure on Mondays! We tried most of the restaurants in the village, with the Taverna situated overlooking the property being our favourite. We. Hope to book a return visit at a time when we can make better use of the enticing pool and nearby beach.
