“Lively market in an interesting town”

It's hard to separate the experience of wandering the market from the surrounding town, but Saturday (market day) is definitely the day to visit Pézenas. The combination of the market with the interesting history (and touch of Molière) makes for a fun and interesting visit. Although many guidebooks call this a "morning market", we arrived after 1 pm to find that only the meat and fish vendors are about to pack up. All other vendors were there through the afternoon. The fruit, ceramics, and textiles stalls provided a nice contrast to the old buildings in the center of town.

Pezenas market is the largest and most touristy in the central Hérault valley, but despite that there are plenty of locals who go (early) as well. Food lovers should seek out the artisan fruit and vegetable producers in the heart of the market and the organic producers hidden in a square in the maze of back streets away from the main market strip.
For other foods head to the top end past all the clothes, household and gift stores.

For something more local in the central Hérault valley, but still a good size, try Gignac or Lodeve (Saturday), Clermont l'Hérault (Wednesday).

On tip - for civilised toilets head for the Tourist Office or pause at a cafe.

A great way to spend a Saturday morning. The market is large with just about everything you need for sale. The prices are high and it is possible to buy elsewhere for less.

Live in Pezenas in the spring/summer and have spents many Saturday mornings at the market. Still the same merchants but clothing for women is frumpish, and quality of textile goods is not consistent. Still enjoy the early morning set- up and all of the flower merchants. Unfortunately prices of goods have been increasing each year and there are no 'deals.'

Pretty town worth a half day and walk around the narrow streets .The tourist office is closed 12 until 2 so they miss selling the town. The ride on the bus is only 1.50 euro and passes through the heart of the vineyards.
