“A castle stay to visit Loire castles”
Reviewed May 9, 2013 via mobile

Ideally located not far from Cheverny, Chambord & Blois, this castle was a nice place to spend 2 nights. We were kindly offered an upgrade by the receptionnist because the hotel was not full. So we stayed in a deluxe in the château. The room was quiet, simple, not si big. The wood all around gives a cosy feeling. We had dinner in the château one of the evening, which proved to be a good idea (good quality, créative cuisine). The breakfast was a bit poor on choice. I would return to that hotel nonetheless !

We have visited this hotel a number of times now and on every occasion it has been amazing. You really look forward to going and when it comes to checking out you really don't want to. The pool is extremely nice with refreshments available. During the day you can visit many of the chateau's like Cheverny and Chambord not to far away. In the evening the hotel's restaurant is outstanding. The service is first class and the food is refined and delicious. I would put this hotel as one of my favourites in the world.

The style is great. The rooms are spacious and very sober. This is a style choice, it is true that it can bother some persons. I guess also that the rooms in the main building are decorated a different way. This is also to be noted : there are different buildings so if you want to actually be in the castle you have to make sure beforehand.

Lacks in the room? None except the slippers. This is no problem as the ground is warmed (stone floor) but it is something you expect. There are also little drawback in the decoration and questions that can be arose : double double beds in suite... this is a bit too convenient ;) The wall closet were also kind of cheap in our bedroom (this could have been assessed very easily).

Overall hotel is very good.

Restaurant is an other history. The main room is nice and pleasant, though a bit noisy. The hall is however out of place: it gives a wrong impression of cheapness. But that is not deadly :) What is however is the very very low level of cooking and the average winelist (you expect much more from that kind of restaurant, that kind of hotel, in the Loire Valley).

Examples : Scallops were frozen and overcooked (way overcooked, probably even warmed up). The sauces were absolutely basic and too heavy. The pork tenderloin was over dry (over cooked) and finally the crème brûlée was actually brûlée (that is, tasted burnt). Overall very bad experience. This is not even the level of my own home cooking. However the breakfast is goood.

My advise is not to eat in the hotel (aside from breakfast). Otherwise, it is ok as price and the location is fantastic.

Beautiful calm setting. Nice comfortable rooms. Friendly efficient staff. The music was totally out of place in the setting, but aside from that an overall good experience. Next time we will have dinner there.

We stayed in this hotel hoping on a beautiful setting and a friendly service. We have been disappointed from the start to the end: very unfriendly and rude staff, poor service, quality of rooms ok but overpriced. The price we paid was far too high for the service we received and we will never stay there again. It is a shame as the setting is beautiful and it could be such a nice place.

Unfortunately this beautiful hotel is spoilt by a complete lack of attention to detail.
On arrival I was informed that there was no porter and I had to carry our bags up two flights of stairs. This did not bode well!
There is nowhere to sit if the weather turns inclement, the pool and terrace have no sun shades and no soft cushions meaning you sit on hard wood or steel and get wet if it rains!
There is no service poolside.
The rooms are clean and comfortable, if a little on the small side.
The staff are helpful and friendly - if you can find them, they never seem to be anywhere in sight and you have to search them out to get any service.
I have never before stayed in a 4 star hotel where there were no bathrobes.
The restaurant is poor, the food certainly NOT up to French 4 star standards, the menu is limited, not a problem in itself as this can be a benefit, but the one night we ate there it was bland and - a pet hate - the fixed price menu included several "supplements" for the more interesting dishes - which weren't by the way.
Had I not booked and paid for this hotel in advance, relying on the reputation of the group, I would have left after the first night.
Seriously don't bother unless they improve, there are much better hotels in the same or lower price brackets in the lovely Loire villages and Towns.

Room Tip: Don't bother - look elsewhere
