“Bring a good book!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 21, 2012

The Hylatio is a bit off the beaten track. There is no public transport and it is very isolated, there is a short walk into the bay part of Pissouri but not very much there a shop and a pub and a very expensive hotel very little else. Apparently it is possible to walk to the village up a very steep hill where there is slightly more activity. A taxi to the village costs 10 euro's each way!
In the hotel there is very little if zero entertainment, no television, there is quite loud unpleasant music played around the pool during the day. Throughout the hotel area there is a mixture of bad smells from drains!
I do not think I have ever encountered a more unhelpful reception, if you can get anyone at all to respond for requests for help they are really very poor. I asked where could I hire a car, was told "see the rep", I asked for directions to the village and was told "see the rep!"
The rep was ok but sold tours like they all do! At vastly inflated prices. e.g trip to Kyrenia North side of the island....69 euros, price in paphos same tour 29 euros!
Extras, lots of extras, ,no television, internet an 5 euros for about an hour, extra for air conditioning.
Electricity/ door lock. As with a lot of hotel rooms the door key had to be placed in a slot to enable electricity supply. A few points with this, on entering the room it is difficult to find slot in pitch dark! On locking room when going to sleep you have to take key out then in total darkness find key hole and lock door before returning key to put light back on again! My wife managed to get it down to locking the door in the dark to 11 seconds.
Car hire is a must and there is a place near the hotel where a car can be hired from.
If you hire from the airport take care as the hotel would be very very difficult to find in the dark, no street lighting and no illuminated hotel name sign!
Self catering facilities were ok except the frying pan provided was still covered in fat from what ever the las occupants had been frying! The fridge was so noisy we had to turn it off at night!

Room Tip: Try and get a room as far away from the car park as possible as the smell of the drains linger more...

On arrival we were about 45 minutes early, we asked the lad on reception if we could leave our cases and return in a little while, he replied don,t worry about that and put our AI wristbands on straight away and told us to get something to eat-drink as our room was not ready. The cleaner said she was sorry about that, heaven knows why we were early.

Our apartment was fine, the staff always cheerful, the owner was OK , some people has said he is grumpy, but how many bother to say hello or good morning to him he was fine with us.,

And the staff are on the go non stop, the staff you see late at night are the same ones that clean up after breakfast, they get a bit of time off in the afternoon then they are working through until 1am nothing is to much trouble for them and they always have a smile.

The food was not to bad sausages bacon egg beans toast for breakfast. Lunch pizza ,spag bol
pasta, burger-chips etc.

The main evening meal could be a bit hit-miss, but in all we found the Hylatio good value for the price we paid.

on the bar area we found it to be fairly quiet most nights, I do not think that it is fair to blame AI drinkers for all the noise , especially at one thirty am ,AI stops at midnight and I never saw anyone knocking back all they could drink just because it was there. nobody falling about drunk every night, this is Pissouri not Ayia Napa. AI beer was served in half pint glasses. the only time we heard a racket was a woman that had arrived AI she was in the bar late and had a high pitched shriek for a laugh, another night there was some late night noise with people in nearby villas I think there was a party going on, Also non AI used to drink their drinks bought from the supermarket on their patios at night.but there was no real noise to speak of. expect for quiz night we could hear that from our room, but it stopped around 11-30pm

As we paid a very low price for Hylatio, we ate out three times during our stay there for a change of scenery.

The age group was mixed a few in there 20s others around 50-60, The staff of hylatio seem to love children, there was only one a little lad about two, there is a little play area for young children, with a play house ,slide and cars.

The gardens were lush, I used to love the courtyard surrounding the bar, with the scent of the flowers ,and the resident cat made the place, he loves that big pot.

The lovely old village at the top still remains full of Cypriot charm ,non drivers it is 10 euro each way from the bay to the village the bus only runs from may-Sept , in high season the Cypriot night is brilliant. The village is lovely but very steep I would not recommend it for people with walking difficulties.

would I return to Hylatio again, yes if I was staying in the bay.

Room Tip: BLOCK 6. If you cannot handle steep stairs, go for a downstairs one bed apartment

We have just returned from 2 weeks stay with Vlad & co. and have these comments to make... Beautiful surroundings, accommodation basic, food poor, very limited choice and Luke warm, the
Biggest let down being that in a country such as Cyprus we were only offered tinned fruit and raisins..marmalade ran out after a week and was only replaced for one day during the next seven, fruit juices diluted. As for the free icecream if you can call it that was terrible one try was enough. Vlad was very unsociable, but his Romanian staff were excellent, nothing too much trouble. Rooms were not cleaned when allocated maid had a day off. Overpriced extras, wifi 5euros for 90mins. Fan in room and safe deposit box both 2.50 euros each per day, aircon 12.50euros per day. We realise we booked a low budget holiday therefore did not have very high expectations but feel that this just made 2 star. Would definitely NOT stay at Hylatio again.

Room Tip: Keep away from pool rooms.

Just got back from week at this hotel. I have to say the food was dire, if you like salad your fine but don't expect any hot meat its all lukewarm and don't taste great or even good for that matter, breakfast is streaky bacon, beans, leather fried eggs, hard boiled eggs some kind of sausage i didn't try, ham, cheese, tomato's, cereal, yogurt , the choice of fruit was endless three kinds peaches and mixed fruit out of a tin,oh and raisins, lol, that's it , lunch is a set menu pizza is OK but i think they use the left over ham from breakfast, i wouldn't try the ravioli its foul and wouldn't feed it to the cats, its very basic, i'm no snob, we stayed in a three star last year in limassol, and the food far outclassed this hotel all you could eat when ever you wanted it and if you went out for the day they would give you a cooler box full of food, dinner here is salads and when i say salads it tomato's lettuce cucumber and feta, they do a few different salads which is OK for a while, rice different lukewarm meats, two different puddings every night repeated every other night ,as was every thing else, snacks are not worth bothering with dry bread and re-used ham,and cheese, the soft drinks are very watered down, alcoholic drinks are OK. no fresh juices here, and this is the land of the fresh lemons and limes, shame on them. entertainment, one quiz night mostly ex pats swamp the place and get all the attention form staff because they are spending, and oh did i mention that paying guests get a different menu to all inclusive, and the meals we saw paying guests getting looked pretty good, even though we had already paid all-in, we went out a couple of nights for dinner it was that dire. The place is very quite the grounds are nice with lime and lemon trees pomegranate trees, of which makes a bit of a mockery of the fruit juices. the bay five minutes walk away is lovely we like the whole area, well placed if you hire a car,we didn't find Vlad the owner that friendly, in fact he was down right sarcastic. all in all , it was relaxing, we hired a car to get about, the lack of varied hot food is the mane gripe, Dont pre-book all inclusive go self catering and try all in for as many days as you want when you get there, it is cheaper but you probably wont go more than three days. Vlad get the food right and you will have a pretty good hotel. Our very best regards go to Ian and jo, and dave and partner, some very nice people.

Room Tip: don't get a pool view. gets noisy the bar is only 30-40 yards away, the grounds are very nice

With family a few miles away at Episkopi we wanted somewhere within easy travel distance and the chance of a self catering studio apartment was ideal. The comfortable room had all we needed for rest and relaxation inbetween family visits. Initially we thought we would do it all on a self catering basis but we were enticed to sign up for a special deal of seven days breakfast for 29 Euro each. This is not expensive but the offering was very limited and each day the 'fresh fruit' consisted of tinned peach and sultanas. The cooked breakfast was disappointing with a choice of dried up fried eggs or hard boiled eggs, although the bacon was yummy. No choice of bread though other than take it or leave it: white sliced only. All in all we were pleased to have only bought one week's breakfast out of our 2 week stay. While we would be pleased to return, despite the late night revellry with the bar open to 1 a.m. and many visitors taking advantage of the all inclusive offer (as much as you want to drink up to midnight!) making it quite noisy, we would recommend an apartment as far from the bar area as possible.

Despite some misgivings on balance we are looking forward to a return visit due to the sheer convenience of location near beautiful Pissouri Bay (5 minutes easy walk), the relaxed atmosphere and the relatively low cost of the accomodation.

Room Tip: Rooms/apartments on the north of the site are quieter.

We had two fantastic weeks in Crete in June and only decided on another holiday in the sun after not being able to top up our tans at home since our return!!! I was concerned because we normally stay in a one bed apartment wherever we go, but as a late booking our choice was limited and there was only a studio available. We still wanted self catering because we like to be independent and eat out at different places. But what a lovely surprise the studio at Hylatio was! It was big, light, double height ceiling and airy with a large balcony overlooking a lawned area and surrounding gardens down to the pool which was hidden behind a wonderful weeping willow tree over which we could see the sea. It was all peace and tranquility as we sat on the balcony having a leisurely breakfast every morning before either venturing to the lovely quiet beach a very pleasant few minutes walk away, getting the local bus to the great village or going on one of the trips we arranged. We loved the beach and the constant sea breeze that was a blessing during the very hot two weeks we were there (12th to 26th Sept). Swimming is very safe, but make sure you take beach shoes it's sand, shingle and pebbles. The Captains Bay was very good for a lunchtime snack and a beer (or two) as was the other little place right on the beachfront. Pissouri is definately for people like us, older couples who don't want bars, clubs etc - no party animals here!! (been there done that). Don't think either Pissouri or Hylatio is suitable for children or younger people but if you want to relax and recharge - perfect! We ate at Hylatio once in the two weeks, they offer all inclusive or bed and breakfast but that's not our style, so opted not to go for the buffet and we chose off the menu and it was very good. A thoroughly enjoyable holiday and we came home feeling relaxed and happy. We would return but obviously not during the peak summer time!!

Room Tip: The blocks numbered in the sixties are the most peaceful with the best views. We stayed in studio 6...
