With family, we spent a week intended-to-be biking trip to Wachau, Lower Austria. Having 2 small kids, we still did some biking but found eating and wine tasting to be same adventurous! We knew about wine, but food quality was big surprise to me. And Kirchenwirt restaurant at Weissenkirchen was one of the best.
Kirchenwirt offers seasonal local food prepared and served in a traditional way, using the best ingredients. Being Czech ourselves, most of the meals were known to us, though in Czech Republic you rarely find them in restaurants (with exception of goulash and schnitzel, of course).
The restaurant offers seating outside and more formal setting inside. We did not feel embarassed at all visiting restaurant in biking suits and the staff seemed to be used to it as well. We made 2 visits for late lunch and both times were very satisfied. Blatwurst with cabbage and potatoes was my favourite, closely followed by cream mushrooms (pffiferlingen or eischwammerl in German/Austrian) with pasta. Also black-bread dumpling was something new to me.
I hope that next time I will have more courage to taste veal "beuschel" and brains and wish to try it in the evening, more relaxing atmosphere.
