We stayed in The Sonnenau apartments for the 2013 February Half Term Week. We had booked independently and drove from The UK. The apartments were easy to find and there was plenty of dedicated parking.
Although the owner does not speak much English, we were pretty quickly booked in and made to feel very welcome. We had a top floor 95 sqm 3 bed apartment and it was very good indeed. 3 nice sized double bedrooms, great size shared bath/shower/WC and a kitchen which was fine for cooking the odd few meals if you don't want to go out. The living/dining area was huge, we were never cold and the whole place was spotlessly clean. There is a Spar supermarket just 5 minutes walk away. Could not be easier. WIFI was available for a small charge for the week and you could book a bread delivery for most days.
So where is the but?????
There were a few minor issues but nothing that would stop me using the apartment again without hesitation but here goes....
If you are looking for a party town, Zell am Ziller is not the place you want to be. It was very quiet with few restaurants. Tip is take the car and had to Mayrhofen in the evening. There was a nice modern Italian restaurant in town though and the food in there was more than acceptable.
The ski bus stop is a good 5 minutes hike. The car is a better bet to get to the various resorts on the ski pass.
The apartments have a ski/boot room in the basement. This room has no door and so we never risked leaving the skis in it choosing to leave them in the luggage box on the car roof. To be fair, I find it very unlikely that anyone would even come across the apartments ski/boot room as the building is well out of town so I am sure it is totally safe but I did not want to risk it. The room does have a boot heater but this really did not dry the boots out well. Probably not helped by there being no door to the room keep the heat in. My boots were pertty damp all week as a result. We could have taked the boots up to the apartment but the owner is rather proud of the cleanliness of the rooms and was quite keen on footware being left outside.
As I said, minor problems but to summarise:
Big and well appointed apartments.
Very clean and well maintained with a friendly (and obviously proud) owner.
Zell am Ziller a bit quiet but a great base for day trips to the resorts in the Ziller Valley.
Plenty of parking on site.
Wifi for a small charge.
Bread delivery can be arranged.
Local supermarket nearby.
Please put a door on the ski locker!!!
Use these apartments if you have a car.
