“Welcome break from the overpriced and undervalued islands”
Reviewed October 15, 2013

We stayed one night here and it was a welcome break from the overpriced and undervalued islands. The owner is the one who makes the place and was very honest in selling us the transfer to Phuket. Chumpon is the real thailand and we found a great local place to have dinner on the night we stayed over. The hostel is clean but just too many floors to climb to reach the 4th floor room where we stayed. We wish the hostel future success and good luck!

My boyfriend and I are on a 9 month trip: 7 hostels in and this was far and away our best experience and we weren't even meant to be staying in Chumphon (we had to reverse back here after our train to Surat Thani ran into a Jeep).
- Owner: brilliant English, friendly and very helpful. Picked us up from the train station, recommended a local restaurant for dinner. When he couldn't get the electricity working in the very early morning and we were nearly denied the free breakfast (which has a good variety and real coffee) he knocked 200B off the price of our room. And we got the breakfast in the end!
- Value for money: excellent. Room was like a 3 star hotel in England but was £14 a night (£10 after our reduction). Breakfast, bed/bath linen, tea and coffee, TV in room and A/C all included.
- Location: just up the road from the station, close to restaurants and night market.

Only issue was having a room that was road facing so quite loud overnight. Still wouldn't have rather stayed anywhere else!

Hi Katie,

Thanks for your review and also for the compliments. I really appreciate it.

By the way, I am so sorry for what happened on that morning. Luckily the problem was solved just in time before you departed.

Thank you again for staying with us and hope to see you again some day.

Cheers!

Even though we didn't stay at this hostel, I would like to say a few words about its friendly owner...

We were stuck in Chumphon after all the trains to Malaysia were cancelled due to protests in southern Thailand. We found this hostel and were offered a whole dorm room for just the three of us. Seeing that we were quite desperate to get to Kota Bharu, Malaysia as soon as possible, he went out of his way (made quite a few calls) to find us an alternative route with bus & train for that very night, even though it meant that he would lose customers.

From what we saw, the hostel looked clean and welcoming.

Thank you very much for your help and kindness we hope to be able to return someday.

Great, clean and kinda hip base in the middle of town. Very nice and clean rooms and toilets and on top its very cheap. Placed in the middle is town so its easy to enjoy the nightmarket with all the great local food. The owner Sood is very helpful and speaks very good english, he assists you with everything a traveller needs and he got reasonable priced tickets to anywhere !

I didn't really want to spend a night in Chumpon but then I found this incredibly friendly, clean and cosy hostel and eventually decided to stay. This place seems light years ahead of all other hostels I visited in Thailand (and they were many). The owner, who is also the guy behind reception desk, speaks perfect English and gladly helped me finding the right train for the following day by making a number of phone calls and checking a number of schedules on the internet. And yes, there's soap in bathrooms and toilet paper in toilets. Felt great and almost like home.

Thanks Mark for spending a night in Salsa Hostel though your first thought was to leave Chumphon right after disembarkation from the ferry. I appreciate your valued comment and look forward to your next visit to Chumphon.

This might be the nicest hostel in the worst town I've ever seen. Sood is so helpful and his English is great. He helped me figure out the fastest and cheapest (oxymoron, i know) way to get to Laos (nok air is a nice airline but the airport is way too far out of town...a story for another time). Everything was clean as a whistle and there was free wifi and a very decent free breakfast! The dogs are apparently loud outside at night, but I didn't notice.
