We stayed here in August on a sudden change in our travel plans, but chose the Ella Motel, as it had the best accommodation for a reasonable price. We went on Half Board basis and that too was becasue the other Restaurant's in Ella were not at all keen to serve locals..... they only prefer to serve foreign travelers!

The rooms which used to be really nice are now a bit run down, the bathrooms need new fittings etc.

The food was excellent.... very tasty. The service too was fabulous from the houseekeping prsonnel to the restaurant and bar staff. Excellent serice and very friendly. The Manager however is a different story altogether.... he is not that friendly nor is he outgoing and pleasant to the guests.... he possibly thinks he does not need to be becasue he is Manager, but if that is so, then he should rethink his strategy...

Overall it was a good experience, but nothing "grand" to talk about.

Room Tip: Get a room on the front near the lobby..... the others are really run down...

This is a fantastic location and the hotel could be amazing but although the rooms are a good size and the bathroom we had was enormous they were in need of a complete overhaul to include more than one plug socket ( which had TV, fridge and sat TV box all plugged in). There was a kettle but you had to unplug everything else and it was a real nuisance to charge up phones etc. The bathroom was in an appalling state, badly chipped tiles, dirty toilet both inside and outside, mould growing all over the shower and tiles and the water pressure was poor. We stayed for 3 nights and I couldn't bear to have a shower so washed down unsing the sink. My partner was braver than I, but he was quickly out.mtherenis no excuse for poor hygiene. The bed had a poor mattress as well with springs very noticeable. Breakfast was poor and we waited 25 minutes for it on our last morning. Poor choice of dinner as well, but we did have a nice bottle of wine which helped!. The staff were friendly and tried to do their best, the manager was also very friendly. The hotel owners and management must take all the comments on board because the hotel is going downhill fast. They can't expect guests to continue to put up with the poor facilities just because of the iconic views. If you have to stay here I would recommend only one night.

We stayed here on a trip through from Hikkaduwa to Udawale to Ella to Kandy back to Hikkaduwa all in 3 days. One night here and to be honest after 12 hrs in a car and various stops for the Safari etc... We would have slept in a horse stable had it been offered as we were that tired. On arrival we were made to feel welcome and although we probably paid over the odds at $120 for the night (3 guests, 1 room), the views were breathtaking. Stunning surroundings! The staff were prompt, courteous and friendly. The rooms are basic but have an old world charm about them. The bathrooms are atrocious and badly need modernised. We burnt ourselves several times in the shower that is like being dribbled on. The tray had a huge hole in the bottom and the general state of the bathroom was not acceptable to be honest. The rooms do not have AC but it is not critical as you are 1,040 m above sea level and the temperature is much cooler. Waking up to see the sunrise over the mountains was outstanding and we were given a packed breakfast as we were leaving early to Kandy on the train the next morning. Overall you should book in advance to get cheaper rates but it is a comfortable enough stopover for the tired traveller and all part of the experience/adventure.

This is not a good hotel. Managed by the CHC, the Ceylon Hotels Corporation (which owns a number of hotels around the country) it is in desperate need of a face lift. The beds are comfortable enough, so you'll get a good night's sleep, but the bathrooms are old, the showers need replacing, the water pressure is inconsistent and the breakfast the worst we have had in Sri Lanka. The staff are friendly enough, but you should consider the other options available to you in Ella. For a lot less you can stay in one of several well-managed guest houses, many of which you'll find on Tripadvisor or in well-known guidebooks. For a fair bit more, you can stay at 98 Acres, which is way the best hotel here with fabulous views, excellent staff and a pool.

Location Location Location thats why you stay here. Views are outstanding.

Been here for ever and looks like not much has been replaced since it opened. In fairness the public areas ware well maintained. Rather dated like most accomodation in the area but thats the charm of the area.

Staff I think are all long serving, know thier jobs inside out and perform well. Not very friendly though. Manager is charming and helpful.

If you eat there stick to Sri Lankan food which is very good. The western food at best is very average and far from inventive modern cusine. Coffee not so good.

Rooms are a decent size but out of the ark, dated and well worn. Beds are comfortable but the matresses must be due for a change. Fittings must be from at least 20 years ago as is the tiny portable . Bathroom, much the same and for the prices charged here a bath mat and hand towels should also be provided. The shower is a joke any one over 80 kg would not even get in the cubical, the water at least is hot. very dated and looks grim.

Small Balcony off the room with two plastic chairs. Views make up for it.

The place has its charm, the location and old world service fit the area.

Come on GFH Group spend some money up dating the old lady

Room Tip: Any room with a view, no point in staying there other wise

I was shocked to see some reviews here. very recently i stayed in this Hotel with my wife. Scenic beauty this place is. you wont be disappointed at all. Paradise for photographers and nature lovers. We enjoyed the good quality of food and the service. we had a wonderful welcome from the staff. they knew we were coming and were prepared to welcome us. yes the hotel is somewhat old and need renovations. that i agree. but i think OLD is GOLD... wonderful garden to enjoy your evening tea.

Room Tip: Madhu is the best for me

We started with a bad note by entering to the hotel.
When we enter and informed about our bookings, i was tolled that there's no booking done.
I was supprised to hear that, since i had payed half money to the head office in Colombo & they confirm the reservation.
But luckily we manged to get a 3pl room that was required.

Rooms are ok. But over all they can improve the quality of the room & toilet.

following day morning we got to know that the girl who was responsible for reservation at the ella motel has done the reservation for June instead of May.

This is a good location, i am sure the management of the hotel in Colombo should visit this place for the betterment of Sri Lanka, since this is a good place managed badly.
