We took the train from Nuwara Eliya. Don't forget to reserve first class tickets well in advance. We had a wonderful tour planner with us. So it was not a problem for us.The scenic views from Nuwara Eliya to Ella are truly amazing. And don't forget to pack some snacks with you.

Did this today. First class which was cool clean and comfortable. Second class looked more fun tho. Scenery is stunning at first but then it’s more and more of the same. Other half loved it all. I fell asleep.

We had read that the scenic train from Nuwara Eliya to Kandy is one of the most beautiful in the world. Watching videos online of people hanging out the windows and standing in car doorways as the train rolls past the fields of green tea plantations was enticing. Well, I must say, it was even better than advertised!

We had wanted second class reserved but these were sold out, so our innkeeper got first class reserved for us. Turned out perfectly fine, and it was not crowded. This meant we could move from seat to seat and from window to window to get the best shots. It is just exhilarating to stick your head out the window, which you'd never be able to do in the US, see the gorgeous scenery, and breathe the fresh air. At some stops, people will meet the train to sell food and you can purchase this through the window.

For us, this lived up to and exceeded the hype and was our highlight of visiting Sri Lanka. The journey we took was about 3.5 hours, so if you do Nuwara Eliya to Kandy, it won't take all day. Tip: if traveling from Nuwara Eliya to Kandy, try to sit on the left side of the train (and the right side for the reverse trip). Cavaet: I had tried repeatedly to find a list of stations online that we'd stop during this journey, to no avail. There were no announcements of any kind about upcoming stops. We were lucky to have Google maps working so that we realized when we needed to get off. It was dark at the time and we were unable to read the sign as we approached. Fortunately, we did okay. But I can easily see people missing their stop.

By all means, take this train ride! A true adventure!

Like eveyone, we heart it's a must. Our local "travel agent" for us tickets to - "Observation seats, all windows, like in bubble..". In reality it was very little room, dirty train coupe, but the last one, sitting with the back to ride direction. In 15 minutes you basically get the full idea of the nature. Locals eat their to go food in train, with fingers, from banana leaves. You might sit nex to one of them, getting some spills.
Train ticket was 1600 for half way, our travel agent took 2400..claiming it as mafia fee or so... again, bad taste.

Eight hours is a long time to stand for in third class. Wonderful ride, take the train to the end of the line, if you get off at Ella you won’t go over the Nine Arches Bridge.
