We went to Grand 39 for a cooking class. Our traditional meal was prepared in front of us which was great fun. The owner is extremely friendly and the food was excellent. Highly recommended if you stop in Ella.

This was such a fantastic place. Iran and family were so welcoming; such nice people! You can certainly tell that Iran really enjoys seeing his customers delight and satisfaction from both meal and service. He strives to make the experience the best it can possibly be. The food was exceptional, definitely the best we had in Sri Lanka, in fact probably ever! We had two dinners - the traditional Rice & Curry and the slow cooked Banana Leaf curry, as well as two breakfasts- fruits, sambols, hoppers, string hoppers and more. They were all great portions so it was very hard not to be well satisfied! clean and comfortable rooms, great scenery, great tea. It was an all round fantastic experience you should definitely try!

Thanks to Iran and his family for all those kindness, great original Sri Lankan food (prepair anything you need), great and clean room (the most comfortable bed in SL) and their amazing hospitality and love what we got there. Over your wishes, Iran advices and organizes everything you need, on a perfect local costs!!! - no any extra charge! His tuk-tuk driver friend is also a very kind guy, and helps you to reach any place easily. They speak good English! So if you arrive to Ella by train without any fixed accomodation, and meet a tuk-tuk driver with a business-card written on the name Grand 39 and Iran, do not hesitate to say YES! You will get more than you need. Thank you Iran again for everything! We will be back :-)

Our tour operator (smal sri lankan one) suggested we do a cooking claas at Grand 39 with Iran and his wife Chanpa. We learned a lot about different Sri Lankan dishes such as chicken curry, green bean curry, devilled potato's, eggplant with mango, jack fruit and cocos sambal. Wrapping all in banana leaves and steaming this. The food was amazing, the cooking class very modestly priced and the most welcoming hosts. We had a fab time!

When in Ella I would definately visit Grand 39!
