It is a nice and easy walk. We set off early and got to the top around 8AM (it took us 1h 20min) and enjoyed a beautiful view on Little Adam's Peak for like an hour before other tourists got there. With a hand-drawn map we got in our hotel, it is not that hard to find the way without a guide although there is one tricky point. It is a path in tea plantations behind a bridge and a waterfall - you need to take a little pathway on the LEFT! It goes up a steep hill. We hesitated here for a while and 2 locals were telling us to take the other way - the wrong way! So make sure not to listen to them:)
