“good family location”
Reviewed April 6, 2013

We travelled with our 2 boys aged 8 & 11 who loved seeing some wildlife around us , we saw mongeese and monkeys (non aggressive) from the balcony.
We read one or two comments about green hill being poor value but we found Ella generally to be pricier than average and for a family room this was fair value.
Alternatives might have put us nearer to the center of Ella which has an issue with a pack of stray dogs that bark away all night.
At green hill you will get woken at 7.00 by the traffic in the valley below but you will have had a good nights sleep away from those dogs. Ella is not a late night town so you may need to eat before 8.00 anyway.
Breakfasts were good and ample with fresh local fruits.
Did we mention the view ? There may be some that are equal but I doubt many better and it would be worth paying a premium for that alone.
As for Podi the owner, we found him charming and knowledgeable and wish him and his wife good luck with their baby when it arrives.

PS there's no pool but couldn't input zeros (sorry)

Room Tip: New family room is very good for young children

Located 400m outside Ella and approx. 1km from the Railway Station (cost for a Tuktuk is 200 Rupies), the Green Hill offers 4 rooms (2 family rooms with 4 beds, and 2 double rooms), all with a shared terrace with a stunning view towards Ella Gap. The Rooms are clean, equipped with a comfortable bed (King-size) with Mosquito-Net, enough lamps and a door towards the terrasse with a security lock. There is no Fan or Ac, however it was cold enough in the night to sleep well. Food is good, the fruitshakes excellent. The owner is a very freindly and helpful young man. Price for the Family Room incl. Breakfast and Dinner was 8000 Rupies (1 Person), which is quite expensive however for Ella standards ok. E-mail respone was within 1 day. Only minor negative point is that you can hear the cars going from the gorge to Ella, however traffic (and horn blowing) stops at about 22h until 6h. And there are some mosqitos...I would go there again. Ella itself is a beautiful nice little village with friendly people. I recommend to stay at least 3 days (walk to Ella rock, Little Adam peak...)

Room Tip: the two double rooms are on the level of the restaurant, however since they have only 4 rooms this s...

After a bit of confusion with our booking, Podi could not have been more helpful. It is worth booking for the spectacular view and after our first night when we stayed in town it was very peaceful. do not be put off that it seems far out of town - it is just 5 minutes walk if you take the shortcut. Podi gave us a good Sri Lankan supper and was extremely helpful.

We stayed at Green Hill for 3 nights and were really happy with it. We got offered a room downstairs at the new part of the guesthouse and gladly took it. Those rooms are bigger and got renovated recently. There was a four-poster bed with mosquito nets and a nice colourful bathroom with a rain shower. Everything was very clean.
Infront of the room there were chairs from which you can enjoy the breathtaking view over Ella Gap. You can hear the street sounds (especially the honking) but that wasn't a problem for us.
The breakfast was pretty nice and changed every day (we had eggs and crepes). Dinner though was a bit pricey but there are really nice restaurants in the village.
The owner was very nice and not a bit annoying. He helped us out with umbrellas and a taxi to Tissamaharama.
We'd definitely go there again, we had a wonderful time and it was good value for the money (5500 LKR B&B for the downstairs rooms).

I have to agree with the other reviews, this place costs way too much. We stay here for one night before taking the train to Kandy on a recommendation from friends we met while traveling. It's unfortunate that this place costs way too much because the room itself was new & clean - we paid 6,000LKR for ONE night, on top of that the breakfast only includes toast and fruit! When we actually got the bill there was also a service charge included - an additional 600LKR. Do yourself a favor and book into a fancy hotel for this price!

This place has a great view, some of the rooms are nice and the terrace is clean. The food tasted nice.

It´s in quite a noisy spot, don´t count on sleeping after 7am, busses honking in the valley below, staff sweeping the terraces, kitchen noises. No proper sheets on the beds, 1st two nights bottom sheet was a kind of silk bed spread, 3rd night bottom sheet was a canvas cover with a thin wool blanket for a top sheet. It´s poor value money. Rooms and food are expensive. Beer very expensive, think 3Euros per bottle! On my third night I was moved to a very small room on top of the kitchen with just enough space to move around the bed. No curtains. The smelly bathroom and hole in the floor toilet were separate. I foolishly agreed to pay too much for the room as it was much easier than going to find another guest house. Was charged an extra service charge of 10 or 12% when I paid.

I heard the owner telling some other tourists that the reason that the price listed in the lonely planet was so much less than what he actually charges was because he had told L.P it was that cheap because he really, really wanted to get into the guide book. It says 2200r/s in the 2012 published book for one person. The 1st two nights I was charged 3500r/s per night and the 3rd night 2700(for a room that would be 1000r/s elsewhere), the price includes breakfast.

We booked this hotel with Podi via email, after reading reviews on Trip advisor. The hotel is a little hard for vehicle access and the last 50 m is approached via a small dirt walking track. well worth walking to! The hotel has 4 rooms 2 large 4 bed rooms downstairs overlooking the valley and mountains with Ella rock a main feature and a perfect view of Little Adam's peak, which is in walking distance, 2 smaller rooms on ground level. all have their own bathrooms. The rooms are spotlessly clean. Unfortunately we could not eat here as Podi's wife was heavily pregnant although we did have a good breakfast comprising a large plate of fruit, toast and jam and tea or coffee. Although it is difficult for vehicles, tuk tuk's (150-200 R), easily make the track to the hotel and there is a 200m walking track to the town through the jungle which is an easy walk taking about 5mins. We would definitely recommend this hotel . Price was 4500 R including breakfast

Room Tip: When booking with Podi, ask for a downstairs or family room (1 Big bed and 2 bunkbeds) which have a...
