Harold's has some good points like good crew, information, involved owner, wifi (albeit slow), free breakfast (toast and coffee), meeting point but it's far from perfect.

We reserved a room, but when we arrived, they had our booking but it was full, so we stayed down the street. We made a second reservation for our return, for a back room for four nights. When we returned, we got a room in the front which gives maximum decibels from tricycles. The hot shower was cold and the room a little worn. The next day we got a room in the back. It was freshly painted so the paint fumes nearly knocked us out. We checked out and moved into a nicer, less expensive room down the street.

We did our diving with Scuba Ventures (next door to Harold's) because Harold was not running the particular trip we wished on the day. Scuba Ventures was cheaper, had good gear and a smaller group.

Harold's may be an "our pick" in Lonely Planet, but it isn't our pick.

I've stayed a couple of times at Harold's Mansion and have always enjoyed my stay. The dorm rooms are super cheap at 250pesos/night and now come with AC overnight too. I would agree that the showers could do with fixing properly but otherwise the bathrooms are fine and cleaned daily. The fan/AC private rooms are very reasonable, clean and spacious.

I don't understand where the negative reviews are coming from!

Breakfast is thrown in, plus drinks all day and internet/wifi access. Each Wednesday and Thursday social grill/drink events are hosted on the roof, a great place to mingle with your fellow guests and make new friends before heading on out into town for some live music.

The trips that are arranged are well-priced and professionally run. Front desk is a mine of information. Harold has a scheme in place that provides a soup kitchen to local school kids a couple of times a month and offers free pedal bikes to explore around town or down to Dauin. The eco-farm up in Valencia provides a lot of the veg cooked in the kitchen too.

There's no comparable backpackers in Dumaguete!

Granted it was cheap,BUT the shower drain was clogged and I had to ask them twice before they cleared it (on the second day). Disgusting. The staff was not helpful at all, we had to ask for toilet paper, and there were discouraging signs all over the place "no bringing in food from outside" "people caught bringing in alcohol will be removed from the premises" "grill night is only for registered guests".... wt... the pillows had a smell too.

I have been meaning to write this review for a very very long time now and feel bad that it has taken this long! I don't normally write reviews unless there is a very good reason and this place has definitely given me a reason! My boyfriend and I stayed here in May last year as we wanted to take advantage of the excellent snorkelling and diving spots nearby. We found that the hostel owner was very friendly and we liked the fact that they have themed nights and social activities to encourage a good social atmosphere. We met some great people here during our stay. The thing that really made this place stand out for us was the fact that my boyfriend had a diving injury due to not equalizing properly and was left with a very painful ear. The owners made it their priority to make sure he was ok, they got him seen by the ENT specialist at the hospital by phoning him directly and they even surprised us by turning up at the hospital while we were waiting to be seen. It was such a lovely gesture and without them I think the whole process would have been a lot harder. For this reason, I couldn't recommend this place highly enough. They really make you feel at home and cared for, which is something that can be missed when you are sick and a million miles away from home. Thanks Harold!

I stayed here in Nov 2011 and had a great time. Harolds was the best backpacker accomodation I found in the Philipinnes, mainly because of the social atmosphere and cheap rooms. I stayed in the 8 bed dorm which was clean with an en suite; AC and fans - there are no storage facilities/lockers in the dorm though (valuables can be left in a safety deposit box at reception).
I planned to stay for 3 nights and ended up staying 5 nights and then returning a few days later for a further 3 nights! There is a grill night on a Wed (bring your own food - the staff organise a trip to the local market to buy your food) and an Oyster night on Fri (free oysters for all - no catch!) which are both really social occasions and a great way to meet other backpackers/travellers. The staff are friendly enough and have a lot of local knoweldge which they will share (if you ask) e.g. how to get to the twin lakes etc.
I also did a dive trip to Apo Island, my main reason for visiting Dumagete. The divemasters all seemed to know the area very well and the dive equipment was well looked after, Harolds also has its own (big) boat to get out to Apo.
If you are backpacking this is the nearest thing to a hostel you'll find in the Visayas region and is excellent value for money. If you are looking for a 5star hotel this isn't the place for you!

Room Tip: Dorm rooms have A/C, the single rooms (which are roughly the same price as the dorm) on the roof don...

Friendly backpacker place with lots of rooms. At PHP 800 for a double with aircon, hot water, tv, wifi and (a limited) breakfast included, we felt this was good value. We stayed here twice, in total five nights. Both rooms we had were small but bright and cheery with a small balcony overlooking the street. Street side was noiser but had the benefit of the balcony to hang laundry. Aircon worked well, hot water was decent and the tv had lots of English channels like many other hotels in the Philippines. Our biggest complaints was that the wifi worked rarely and that our first room's bathroom ceiling leaked from some heavy rains they'd had. Breakfast was small and basic – bread to toast yourself with butter or jam. Tea, coffee and cold water was available throughout the day and evening which was nice. Additional food and drinks are available for purchase and we felt they were fair value (a 500ml Red Horse beer was PHP 40). Overall we enjoyed our stay here and likely will return here in the future. There's a lot of information available and the staff are helpful when planning excursions. They also offer some very affordable dive trips to Apo Island. One thing I would suggest is if arriving by ferry, double check if they're sending a van since we missed the free ride when we arrived. Also, check what nightly offerings they have. Friday's is free oyster night, Wednesday is bbq night (bring your own groceries) and on other nights there are sometimes gatherings on the roof which are fun and social.

Stayed in an air con/private bath room (P800/night) and loved it. Room has everything - cable, air con, hot water, balcony, comfortable bed. Its not on the main strip (roxas blvd.) but is a quick 5 minute walk away.
