We went to Echo Beach Hotel after a safari in Kenya and absolutely loved this place. If you want to get away from the commercial hotel atmosphere, this is the place to be. We were made to feel at home from the moment we arrived and received excellent service during our stay. Its the people who made the difference. Andrew, Sue and the entire staff were very friendly and warm and made sure that we were comfortable and enjoying our stay. We have some wonderful memories of evenings spent with them and other guests in the bar/dining area. The food is as good as any gourmet restaurant with a wide variety of choices for every meal. Not to forget the excellent cocktails by Mujaka behind the bar.
The rooms were clean and done up to a high standard. The beach is very private and just a few steps from the cottages.

All in all it's a perfect getaway and we would highly recommend this place.

After a safari and a Kili climb Echo beach was our three night relaxation at the beach and it fitted the bill perfectly.

The rooms are in one or two storey mini apartments. These are well fitted out, roomy and comfortable. The salty water in the showers / basins is the only real downside.

The location is near Bweju village on a very nice and quiet beach and is great for a getaway. It would not be so good exploring but that is not why we were here.

The food is above average but not quite as good as the literature would have you believe. Specials were always fresh and well prepared.

The staff were very friendly and helpful.

This is not a 5* luxury resort but is perfect for a quiet and relaxing break.

We were lucky enough to stay at Echo Beach for two whole weeks and, after a hectic few months of work and wedding planning, it lived up to our dreams of a romantic honeymoon in an exotic paradise.

Echo Beach is very relaxing. The beach is idyllic and the view of the Indian Ocean changes each day according to the tide. We spent our days sunbathing, swimming and reading and the fact that the hotel is small meant that we had our pick of sun loungers both near the pool and near the beach. On the very few occasions that we felt like deviating from this routine, there was no shortage of things to do, and the helpful owners arranged spa treatments, diving and a two-day trip to Stone Town.

The food is outstanding. Every day Andrew prepared a different menu, the highlight of which was the beautifully prepared fresh seafood. On two evenings during our stay there was a Swahili night with an amazing shellfish barbeque and buffet table loaded with local dishes. The feasts were followed with fun African entertainment, including dancing and plenty of opportunity for audience participation!

As honeymooners, we were surprised with canapes and champagne on our terrace on the first night which was a lovely touch. I also celebrated a special birthday while we were there and was treated to a delicious champagne and lobster banquet finished off with a personalised birthday cake. The hotel staff sang the 'Jambo' song and then 'Happy Birthday' as I blew out my candles, they really worked hard to make it a night to remember.

Our room was a little thatched bungalow that faced the pool. The colourful voile curtains on the terrace were a nice design touch, adding a romantic feel as they blew in the breeze. The wetroom was luxuriously fitted and had a great shower. The whole suite was very comfortable and well maintained by the cleaners who came twice a day and even did all of our laundry!

This hotel has a lovely family atmosphere and by the time we left we felt like we had made really good friends with the staff and owners. Sue, Andrew and Lucy looked after us superbly well, helping us to make bookings, arrange transfers and get to a bank. We had a great time getting to know them while socialising before dinner. The hotel staff were superb and very well trained. We had fun learning Bao, a local game and 'Jacko' went out of his way to buy us our own set to take home! 'Dula', Rose and the other bar/waiting staff were lovely too and we made firm friends with 'Lordie', the Bao grand master!

We would definately recommend this as a wonderful holiday for those looking for relaxation and something a little more intimate and unusual than a big glitzy chain-resort. The place is beautiful, the food superb, the staff attentive. A perfect honeymoon.

My husband and I stayed at Echo Beach Hotel for six nights after a great safari at Lake Manze camp in Selous. We purposely chose this hotel on the advice of the superb Tanzanian Odyssey, because we wanted a blend of the personal/independent style of hotel with a little bit of luxury. The most luxurious things about the hotel were its location on a fabulous, almost empty stretch of white beach, and the wonderful food served at lunch and dinner time. The rooms were also lovely, with large, comfortable balconies/verandas where we spent lots of our time!
International style 5* this is not - on the contrary this is luxury on a small scale and not an impersonal, bland, branded hotel. In our opinion far preferable.
If I had to say one thing it might be that, while the variety of the lunch and dinner menus was perfect and the food outstanding, there was less variety at breakfast time. While it was a very nice breakfast, it might have been interesting sometimes to have something different for breakfast, (e.g. local cuisine?) if you're there for a prolonged stay.

This was the last stop on our honeymoon trip (stayed in two 5* hotels prior to this), and we stayed 5 days. Overall, it was a great stay at Echo Beach (fantastic location, quiet and the service staff were very friendly and welcoming) but we found our stay was marred by 2 things:

1) Last night there, we fell ill after eating dinner there. My husband and I had acute diarrhoea and stomach cramps. This was diasappointing itself but what was more disappointing was the reaction of the hotel owner, who instead of investigating the problem (and it was definitely THEIR problem as the only food we could eat there was their restaurant's food), suggested we'd picked up a bug elsewhere (even though we'd not been anywhere else in the past 5 days).

We then discovered the girl in the hut next to us had the same problem, but also had vomiting too. We were lucky enough to have medication on us, but our stomachs were not 100% for the next week, and we spent our flight back to UK and first week back home continuing to experience stomach cramps and poor digestion. Clearly whatever we'd ingested had not been fit for dishing up

2) Our room was very comfortable - no complaints there. However, we wouldnt say the bathroom was at all "5 star". Upon arrival it smelt badly of the drains. When we reported this, they sorted it out almost immediately but it continued to smell quite damp and the water tasted unusually salty. There was also no shower gel or shampoo provided - at least one of which we would have expected to find in a "five star hotel"

Overall ths is a nice little hotel, but if you're expecting five star for the money you pay, stay somewhere else

Four years ago we followed a safari at Breezes, Bwejuu, Zanzibar. This year we wanted the same wonderful location but less formality in a smaller, more personal, hotel - if one existed. We found it!
Echo Beach was just the ticket. With the sardonic Andrew and ever-helpful Rob as hosts (Sue was unwell), I think I can safely say that I've never relaxed so much anywhere.
The site is well kept and the rooms lovely - not 5*, but then that's not what we wanted.
I've seen reviews complaining about the inability to swim at low tide. For me this is more than compensated by the fact you can walk for hours amongst the coral and ocean life - how many places are there you can do that?
And my daughter loved Clyde!

We arrived in style, traveling for 3 hours on a Dalla Dalla from Matemwe with 18 locals all wanting to wish us well and say goodbye following our 8 days working with their school and community.
Echo Beach was our last stop before returning to the UK and we had booked 5 nights there to rest and watch the world go by and that is exactly what we did, in very comfortable and homely surroundings.
We found the atmosphere of the place extremely relaxing, where nobody felt they had to or needed to put on heirs and graces or hang over you. Everyone was very pleasant and friendly and we spent most nights up till late talking to other guests and Sue or Andrew with lots of humour included!!
The sample menu sold the place to me and the food lived up to all expectations - absolutely superb every day from fillet steak to swahili buffet to kingfish all fantastic.
The accommodation is very good with attention to detail from Sue re interior, the beach is perfect and a pool if like me you don't like swimming with fish!!
As other reviews have stated if you want to be run around after or constant electricity then don't go to Echo Beach or Zanzibar for that matter, however, if you value people who consider you part of their family and talk openly and honestly, who provide superb food in an idyllic setting then go for it here.
We had a fab time just a shame we had to "leave on a jet plane" - Andrew has a great compilation of music for all to listen to.
Thank you for a fab 5 nights, two dogs were part of the family to and very friendly despite other reviewers comments
