“intresting tranquil peaceful break away”
Reviewed March 17, 2015 for a stay in March 2015

we loved that our villa was private, that it was situated on the beach, that we had an excellent chef who was flexible and willing to adapt to our needs and tastes. the staff were friendly and accommodating and always present to check on our well being. Michelle's tips prior to our trip were useful and the manager went out of his way to help us with anything we needed or places we were interested in seeing. We enjoyed spending time with him as there were few guests at this time. We would have preferred an aircon in our bedroom but that was also due to our 'heat rashes' from the malaria meds we were taking!
A feast for the eyes and the soul. What a beautiful place and people! A hassle and hiccup free week away from the hustle and bustle of our lives. Thank you Michelle and Matthew and especially Ussi! You will see us again!

“A great place to park off and relax”

What a great place to park off and relax! Such a lovely setting. We stayed 5 nights and apart from a few excursions and daily dips in the sea, we did little but laze about reading, talking, eating, drinking, and napping. It was hot during our stay, so we spent most of our time outside on one of the covered terraces in the refreshing breeze. We seldom used the wi-fi... how liberating it was to be (mostly) technology free :)
We found the staff very friendly. Usi, the manager, popped in daily to say Jambo! (Hello!) and to check that everything was OK. He was also a great help arranging local tours/outings.
We hired bicycles (basic but rideable) one day and rode up to Dongwe Beach where we hired masks, snorkels and fins before boarding a dhow to go snorkelling at one of the reefs. Fantastic! The captain spoke little English (more than our Swahili!) but that didn't matter. He came snorkelling with us pointing out the giant clams and the multitude of fish, colourful and not. The dhow itself was impressive.
Fishing at Kizimkaze wasn't exactly what we expected (the captain cast the lines which were dragged along behind the boat as motored up the coast) and we didn't catch any fish, but we were rewarded with the sight of 2-3 pods of dolphin close by.
We did catch a stunning sunset from Michamvi Beach before returning to Pingwe for an evening at Upendo - another lovely setting serving great food and G&Ts with a smile. The seafood platter for 2 was enormous... enough for 3, but we gave it our best shot :)
We walked along the beach from Bwejuu to Paje (~15-20 mins) a few times to watch the kite surfing, and stopped at Paje by Night bar/restaurant for pizza and salad. It seems to be a happening kind of place, although sadly it's set back from the beach so no breezes wafting through. The owner ordered a taxi to take us back to the Villa, as we'd been advised not to walk along the beach at night. Fair enough, wouldn't do that at home either.
When not dining out, we arranged for chef Abedi to cook dinner at the Villa. Wonderful Abedi prepares breakfast at the Villa daily, and we can highly recommend his crepes :)

“Be carful- we got stolen few times from our safe in the room!!!”

well, we had an very unpleasant and upsetting experience in the villa. When we arrive we found out that only 1 safe is working and the manager told us that all the keys are lost except one. After 3 days my father checked and noticed that 200 usd from his money is missing. Then we saw that also 200 usd from my wallet is missing- all were in the safe locked. We still weren't 100% sure so the next morning we checked again and then in the evening another 100 usd missed....the same evening we got call from my dads credit card company saying there were several use of 2 cards! Then we knew for sure!! Some one got into my room every day with a key to the safe, and took money and copied our cards...unfortunately the story repeated with all our cards( 5 cards total)
I must say that the stuff there is amaZing and we don't think its them but we are 99% sure its ussi the manager! When we told him about the case he was very nonchalant and he talked to the cleaners and chef, he was the only one knowing any thing about internet and he has control on every thing there. We felt really insecure after that and we stayed 10 days! After we told him so money stopped disappear and we cancelled the cards...the feeling was really bad about it!!

About the owners: from the moment we paid online and got there email we never heard from them! Never asked till now how was our stay or any thing...They told me that there are guards at night- well, no guards in our 10 days stay!!
i can tell you that they are not trusted people: they write that there is wifi- well thats a lie! The wifi doesn't work, you cant even load an email...the stuff there told us that all the gusts complaining about it and they do nothing about it!!

If you would see the review before me they write that the fridge is bad( they 100% right) the owners sating they bought a new one- well they didn't) its a shame to put such an small and broken fridge in such an big house!!

They own also vanilla villa and crazy mouzungo guest house next to the villa

About the villa- amazing location! Great beach, quiet and beautiful

The staff is really nice! The chef is amazing and we had an great time with him!! The cleaners are also nice and the place is clean

The manager there is trying to give very high prices for trips- bargain with him- 50% of what he say!!! Or try not to get in touch with him( if the owners wouldn't get rid of him after what happened)

In overall we had an great time all the family together and enjoyed the villa but we felt unsecured and i feel the owners doesn't care about the guests! I have the same business in tel aviv and would never think not to write my guests even once to hear if every thing is ok...

Management Response

I have taken some time to respond because I wanted to be sure of the facts and details, taking the time to investigate both you, our client and the staff on duty during your stay.

These are indeed very serious allegations and we have tackled this matter with due diligence.
During our 5 years of operation, we have had the same staff. We are a small personal serviced villa and have never experienced anything of this kind. I have to say that the team and I are most distressed.

What we did find, was this: there is only ONE key to the safe, handed to the client on arrival.

You had the key in your possession during your stay, no one else.

You say you are sure there was money missing but did not contact the police at any time to report the incident? Why? This is strange, surely it could have been reported and investigated? A police report is needed for any insurance claim.

Your group removed money from the safe daily to buy food and drinks - both lunch and dinner - which means a large group had access to the money in the safe? It is our experience that with big groups sometimes people lose track.. Is it possible that money was exchanged into Tsh, used for shopping and not accounted for? As you know, all transactions on the coast are strictly cash and shopping was done twice daily.

We have been involved with this community for 12 years and trust me this small community will definitely be buzzing if someone was seen to have come into sudden "wealth" - we would have been informed immediately.

Is it not also possible that you may have used the credit cards for shopping or cash withdrawal en route and prior to arrival in Zanzibar?

Having said that, as we value you and our future clients, we have taken the following steps to ensure your peace of mind:

1. Removed and replaced the safe in question (upstairs) with a new safe.
2. Placed an additional safe downstairs - so guests don't have to share.
3. Removed all keys from safes whilst villa is unoccupied, locked in the admin office for safekeeping, to be handed to guests on check-in. One person will sign for the key at check-in.
4. Briefed staff to ensure villa is kept locked when guests are out, in order to secure the property from any potential future loss or damage.

With regards to the fridge - it's a full size fridge/freezer, purchased late last year. We will also be providing guests with a drinks fridge to ease congestion for larger groups.

Wifi- its all about the signal. The latest modems have been placed in the villa, but it can be slow with large groups using the internet at once. As soon as a faster/more improved modem is available form Zantel, we will most definitely upgrade.

“Disappointing except for location”
Reviewed January 6, 2015 for a stay in December 2014

I have never written a review before because I have never felt so misled before. The reviews and photographs of Saffron Beach Villa are misleading. The positive is that the property is right by the sea and by a beautiful beach. The food was also quite good.

Otherwise the property suffers from the following problems.
1) Some of our things went missing including a bottle of red wine.
2) The manager of the house is rarely available and not helpful when he is. For instance, we asked for some more hangers and he looked like the sky had fallen in.
3) The water kept going off. It turned out this was because the manager kept turning it off. Although he told us there was a problem with the pump. We would have been happy to be assigned times for showers but instead we just had to hope the water was on.
4) The owner of the house (the person you correspond with by email) was not helpful either and was not easy to get hold of. She provided no phone number, even when asked and frequently did not respond to my emails for a long time (6 weeks at the longest count after a lot of chasing).
5) The house is self-catered but the chef gets the food for you. We wanted to get food on our first day but despite asking for meals a week in advance, and selecting the items from the menu, this wasn't allowed. Instead we were guided to the next door bar (which turns out was owned/run by the manager of our house).
6) Following on from above, we wanted to buy some beers for the house but the chef wasn't allowed to get these for us when he went to the shops to buy our food. Again because the manager wanted us to buy them at the next door bar at a premium.
7) There is no air conditioning and the fans are pretty poor. The back rooms were stifling at night and not helped by the plastic sheets on the beds. Most of our group could barely sleep.
8) The refrigerator was on its last legs and we had to put drinks in the freezer to get them cool.
9) The paintwork is peeling and the house is pretty run down as a whole (the bathrooms are a bit more modern). Towels are old and bed sheets could be replaced.
10) I specifically asked that there be enough beach loungers for all the people staying, and the owner assured me there would be. However when we arrived there were none. I asked the manager for them, and he said he would need to ask the owner if he could buy some. These never turned up. Instead we had to battle with the bar next door for seating on the beach.

Thank you for confirming that Saffron Beach Villa is a superb villa, in a superb location, served by great staff and a Chef that cooks amazing food!!! Yes, the images and the 12 wonderful reviews speak volumes.. oh and you also said on a great Beach! Yes, the East Coast is a superb location for a holiday.

You didn't have the decency to leave your name, but you booked a SELF CATERING stay, then wanted to order a la carte meals like you're staying at the Ritz... I informed your friend 4 MONTHS ago that the MENU is a guideline for you to PLAN YOUR SHOPPING - so, like everybody else on arrival, you go shopping and Chef does the cooking... instead you arrive and order a la carte (starters, mains, desserts) for 9 guests (to which I had said no a week before you arrived) and to which the staff said NO!!
Staff are there to assist you in your meal planning, but as per our numerous written emails/communication a la carte is not possible. Your feedback here and group communication is inaccurate.

The Saffron Manager is a local Swahili man, who runs the little restaurant next door - most guests love to pop over for a drink or a meal and his name is Ussi (if you had bothered to ask). I am sure he would have loved to have you visit and support his a local initiative, great Seafood food at local prices - You were never obliged, a simple refusal would suffice, no need to make it sound like he forced or threatened you? Swahili are very warm welcoming people and always like to make everyone feel at home..

Again, as a SELF CATERING guest - our Muslim Chef and staff refused to buy your Alcohol. So you're upset...apologies for the inconvenience of doing your own meal and drinks planning and shopping. And seriously - are you saying that paying $3 for an ice cold beer on a stunning beach, is a rip off? You should have asked Ussi to show you the local bars that serve warm beers a few metres up the hill, they're about $2?
I just don't think you get the idea of a Self Catering villa rental, you have to actually organise your drinks and meals! It is not a hotel with waiter service.

So, from this starting point, sadly you were unpleasant and disruptive to our Zanzibari staff who ran up and down all day long to try and please you.

Frankly, your claims about the actual house is unfounded - Saffron is a very well maintained villa, guests love staying in this house as you can tell by 12 previous reviews... It was last painted in July, a new fridge was placed in October and if you don't know the difference between a hygienic mattress cover and a "plastic bedsheet" .........oh and bedding is 400 threadcount Egyptian cotton from a hotel shop in Singapore?

The house was built for good airflow - beachfront with sea breezes, louvre doors, lots of doors and windows, all 5 bedrooms have great natural cooling systems and fans the house has never had air conditioning and not sold with airconditioning. You have the audacity to write such a rambling list, honestly, did you have any time to go swimming or were you checking the paintworks?

Saffron Beach Villa has a large terraced cushioned baraza, a garden swing set, a 6 bed pagoda on the beach and 8 beachbeds.. but our Manager still ran around for more beds? Why???

There is nothing misleading about the images, pictures or reviews of this house!!

It is however Self Catering and perhaps you had to move a lounger from one side of the beach to the other.....you should have been better informed by your group leader and have taken some responsibility for the planning and shopping of your drinks, meals.

“I wish I could keep this secret, but...”

Saffron Beach Villa was perfect. We stayed 5 nights and will definitely book a longer stay next year. The upstairs has 3 bedrooms with king sized beds and en suite bathrooms. The two front bedrooms are both incredibly bright and have a wall of glass doors that open up onto a covered terrace. Downstairs there are two more large bedrooms and an open kitchen and lounge area. The villa was spotless when we arrived and housekeeping came everyday to tidy up.
We organized a fishing trip early in our stay and caught a 40 pound king fish that chef Abeddi prepared in different delicious ways for different meals throughout our stay.
In October, this part of the beach is slow and calm. There were very few people on the beach which was fantastic. The kids surfed on their boogie boards at high tide, and explored during low tide while we watched and sipped gin and tonics on the villa's upper terrace.
A thirty minute walk down the beach takes you to the busier, more built up, Paje beach where you can find some great places to eat lunch or swim in one of the resort's swimming pools.
Honestly, this is the first time that I have written an online review for anything. Part of me wants to keep this place a secret so I can book it when I want it, but this is such a wonderful spot with such great staff that they deserve to be busy.

We loved the location, view and personalised service. The fresh fruit, blended on the spot was a great way to start the day. My 7-yr old loved the beach, exploring at low-tide. Also Crazy Mzungo's right next door meant easy access to the bar and restaurant, for those days we needed company. The personal chef was excellent, preparing lovely meals with whatever fresh ingredients were at hand, especially the fish and octopus!
