“Nice resort in an extremely poor area”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 1, 2011

We stayed here for 4 nights at the end of a fantastic safari vacation just to relax. There is a main building where the reception is located, the bar with WiFi, internet café, breakfast restaurant. In fact everything is open air with a traditional east African roof to provide shelter against tropical rains. WiFi internet was available in the bar area for a reasonable price of 15 US$ for 4 days. It was at times rather slow, but most of the time it worked well.

The rooms are located in a beautiful palm garden, the closer to the sea the more expensive the rooms are. Our room (a standard room) was spacious with a king size bed and a mosquito net around it, which you really need here. Moreover the room was sprayed with insectant repellent every afternoon (I don’t know how healthy this is!). Airco in the bedroom worked well, but it did not reach the bathing area, so there it was very warm. The bathroom area looked tired and the floor has a type of tiles that are very difficult to clean. Are bath math was never changed although really dirty.

Evening buffet style dinner was served in the restaurant at the swimming pool, which is located directly at the sea. Every evening there was African singing and dancing during dinner. Although I appreciate that entertainment was provided, for us it was too much and too loud. Four evenings we were not able to talk with each other during dinner, only when the singers took a short break! The staff in the restaurant was very friendly but not professional at all.

The disadvantage of this hotel is its location, there is really nothing outside the resort and Stone Town is 50 km away (1 hour). Excursions are very expensive but it is worthwhile to visit Stone town.

We have travelled to many exotic countries but the Ocean Paradise was without doubt the most relaxed and enjoyable holiday of our lives. From the General Manager to the gardeners the entire staff made us feel welcome and the excellent service was always delivered promptly and with a smile, nothing was too much trouble. The food was excellent and provided a wide and interesting selection.
We have no hesitation in recommending this to anyone looking for an idilic holiday on the shores of the Indian Ocean. Prior to leaving the UK we were warned about the beach salesmen and how aggressive they could be if you didn't buy their goods, nothing could be further from the truth, in fact we found them to be friendly and entertaining and they understood the words "No Thank you"

Room Tip: Go there and experience it for yourself.

Beautiful Zanzibar getaway!

We recently stayed at Ocean paradise after a grueling Kili climb and short safari.

It was a lovely way to wind down and complete a very memorable holiday.

The staff are friendly and go out of their way and nothing is ever too much trouble.

Rooms were clean and the housekeepers went that extra mile to decorate our bed every day with beautiful flowers.

The food was always fresh and varied and not being the biggest fan of buffets, I must say that the dinners were very good and there was always ample choice.

The gardens are beautiful and the gardeners spoiled us with fresh coconuts once they knew we liked them and watching them climb up the palm trees is a treat in itself.

All in all a wonderful, relaxing stay.

Hakuna Matata!

I read the previous reviews before I traveled and to be honest I was slightly worried as my wife and I were due to travel to Zanzibar and had also been booked by the same agent.

However, I must say that the Resort was fantastic for the most part and I am glad that the 2 most recent reviews did not deter us from staying there.

The food was varied with a different theme every evening and a wide choice. Our honeymoon lobster dinner was superb.

The rooms were clean, the staff friendly and welcoming and the Resort itself was beautiful.

The tours were good- the Spice Tour was not really my cup of tea (my wife loved it and stocked up on numerous spices!) Stone Town was fantastic and we got some great tips from the hotel staff of what to do, see and eat!

Zanzibar is a poor country and unfortunately whilst it can be heartbreaking to see the poverty this will take time to change and I sincerely hope that the authorities will look into this, as tourism is obviously important to the island.

I would wholeheartedly recommend this Resort and can say that we had a wonderful stay.

We will definitely be back!

We arrived here from Cape Town where we were married (we are Irish but wanted a wedding abroad). this place was recommended by trailfinders, our travel agents. It was a BIG disapppointment. In the brochure we were shown, it was rated as a 4 star by our UK travel agent, however from talking to other guests and looking into it on the net we have discovered it has been classed from 5 star to 3 star depending on the country and agent. It is definitely basic 3 star. The food in particular is comparable to school dinners. I know that they had recently acquired a new chef, but to be honest, we saw little improvement. The food tried to emulate different cultures but it all tasted like it was out of a tin or packet. The accommodation was tired and obviously poorly maintained. The number of stairs to get up and down for breakfast and to reception was ridiculous. The staff, whilst pleasant for the most part, were not professional e.g. I counted 10 waiters standing at the bar doing nothing for 15 mins while we waited for our lunch bill despite being the only people there.. this type of thing was a common occurance. BEWARE of the ocean blue safari that the hotel advertise... not to exagerate but having travelled alot of the world, this was possibly one of the most badly organised and unsafe trips I have taken,.We got caught in a storm and the boat nearly capsized several times but they refused to hand out life jackets, a French child age 10 was nearly swept away.It was terrifying. Even before this there were snorkelling groups who were nearly run over by fellow boats and they had no idea how many were in the water or where they were.

We felt very ripped off especially with the internet which was so slow that it took 15 mins to send one mail and they were charging $10/hr. Also we were told by a guest relations person that laundry was free, only to find we were charged $30 for it on check out at 06am. When disputed we were told to "fill in a form"

In conclusion, I think its really important to highlight that we were really shocked by Zanizbar.Nobody tells you how horrifically poor it is, how there is NOWHERE to go outside your resort, how poor the facilities are in general and how the travel brochure pictures can misrepresent a country by showing you a white beach and a sunbed. I wish I had read a review that told me the honest truth about the place and I would have chosen somewhere else for our honeymoon, as we felt like we had turned up to a school summer camp instead of our honeymoon. I understand there are people who are on a budget or are not bothered about standards but the problem is that the brochures and websites miscontrue the resort and island as a 5 star haven when it is in fact a struggling 3 star resort.

Greeted on arrival and shown to room. Thatched accom. v attractive but as a woman on her own a very long way from reception - almost the furthest -in shade with no view. Changed to a room nearer to reception on the first floor with good balcony - not a problem. Room service at first seemed good with attractive towel sculptures and flowers, but this tailed off and my balcony was never cleaned. Lots of power cuts - every day- one lasting for six hours. Tried to explain - twice - that I did not want the bedside lights put on when the bed was turned down, obviously because of mosquitos. This was either not understood or ignored. Probably the first, as English did seem to be a problem for the staff, with only very basic conversation, and I did get the feeling that sometimes they pretended to understand what you said but didn't really. The pool and fenced off beach area were very attractive, but the beach was a nightmare because of being accosted and I only did it once! The food was ok, if a bit boring and the evening entertainment very good.

Having been a world traveller for many years,I think Zanzibar is the poorest country I have ever been to and sadly this does make a difference to your feelings about the holiday. The housing seem dilapidated and unfinished and many of the children do not even have shoes. Stonetown lacks any charm and was hot and smelly, with scooter traffic up your bottom when walking through the alley ways.

I took two excursions, one to Stonetown, as described above, and to Prison Island. What a rip-off. Air conditioned car ride to Stonetown - best bit - then down to scruffy beach to collect our snorkelling gear from the dirtiest shed I can remember! Then down to the beach to try and clamber into an elderly elongated canoe with old plastic seats lashed to the sides at one end. The trip was pleasant enough but on reaching the island we had to trudge up a very hot beach walk along a stoney path and through a deserted restaurant area to a really scrubby compound where the giant tortoises are kept to be fed with provided greenery by eager tourists. I can't say that it was outwardly cruel, but certainly exploitation of a gentle creature. We were told that we could snorkel off the beach, but the tide was out!!! We were then taken out to the coral reef to snorkel, but the sea was so choppy that this was not possible, although two of the party did try. Back to Stonetown and our Hotel. This sad trip cost 50 US dollars each.

I will certainly not be going to Zanzibar again

This hotel looked tired and well-used, as did our bungalow. The evidence of past encounters with mosquitoes was left on the walls, and the grubby mosquito net had a stain on it which looked like blood. There were plenty of places in the dark and dingy interior for bugs to hide! The sound of the diesel generator cutting in and out also ensured we did not get a good night's sleep.

We saw some older guests having a bit of difficulty negotiating the many stairs to reach the main reception and dining area, but the food really wasn't worth the effort needed to get there.

The staff were very friendly and courteous, but there are better places to stay in Zanzibar.

Situated on Zanzibar’s picturesque North East coast overlooking the turquoise Indian Ocean, it is as the name suggests a little piece of paradise. At Ocean Paradise Resort Zanzibar, you will be greeted by a blaze of colour as you sweep down the imposing driveway, saluted by a Masai warrior as you pass through the entrance gate and be captivated as you arrive in reception and look out over the resort and the azure blue sea. Mature coconut palms swinging in the breeze, white sandy beach, beautiful landscaped gardens, traditional style round chalets with pitched makuti roof, a stunning waterfall feature and the largest swimming pool in Zanzibar are just some of the sights that await you. A big smile and the greeting of "Jambo" will be the first words you hear, as you begin to feel the warmth that the people of Zanzibar are famed for. ... more   less
