Having spent a rejuvenating 17 days at The Sultan Sands, I can say with a smile that they deliver everything that has been promised. Right from the warm and friendly staff to the variety to multi cultural cuisines that are served for every meal, it has all been managed with great finesse. There was not a single day that I had to sit and think.."oh now what"...much to my pleasure the hotel itself had so many great activities- I learnt how to make a carpet out of coconuts (just one of the few jovial activities)!!
The spa is a treat on its own...I wish I could be there right now...relaxing while getting a swedish massage..staring out at the beautiful water...oh and not to forget the hot tub after the massage..sigh...just marvelous.
My room was comfortable and clean...there were a few ants around..but hey..they aren't going to eat up are they!
All in all I was satisfied with the thorough service that I experienced at Sultan Sands..If i do go back to Zanzibar..there isn't any doubt that I will be staying here again!!

We spend 6 days in this place after a week of safarying through Tanzania and were expecting to relax in nice atmosphere. We were hugely disappointed.
First thing, our shower was broken and took 3 days (!!!) to get fixed, even though we reminded them several times a day that it was still not usable. Once we needed fresh linen for our bed and waited 4 hours (!!!) for them to bring fresh ones. Besides, the staff was extremely slow and unfriendly. The equipment in the room was old, the mosquito nets had holes, the lamp on the bedside tables in such horrible condition that it would give you an electric shock if you touched it.
The beach was very small and tight, not an ideal place to relax. On top of that, there would be locals on the beach constantly talking to you and wanting to sell you things - annoying more than anything else.
Furthermore the mattresses they distributed on the beach were old, filthy and disgusting, anything but hygienic to lie on. Luckily there was a towel to cover it - damage control.
The internet connection that they offer for free is a mere catastrophe, it took us 30min to get connected and then it would break down every other minute. So if you need anything done - that is not the place. There would be better internet for horrendous sums.
In the evening, during dinner, there would always be some sort of entertainment that is mentioned nowhere before you arrive: bands, singers etc that would not give you a minute of peace or the possibility to chat.
The food was average, the fruit they served ridiculous considering that you are on the place on earth were all exotic fruits grow: they merely had bananas, oranges, mandarines, sometimes also papayas. I can buy all that at home at the supermarket - I really would have expected more here.
The service overall was unfriendly, incompetent and the slowest I have ever experienced.
I would never go back there and can strongly recommend you choose another hotel to spend your time in Zanzibar at.

We stayed for 7 nights here... for my sons wedding ... the hotel was a super venue for the wedding... and the hotel staff were excellent....they were married on the volleyball court which had been trasformed into the Wedding venue for the afternoon and evening... Masai Warriors provided the guard of honour...,,
The hotel restaurant is superb with an excellent selection for all of the main meals... we stayed all inclusive... but were disappointed that there were no snacks available in between meals...and drinks stopped being served at 11pm...not a vast selection.. My daughter and her 2 toddlers were also part of the wedding party and the hotel staff went out of their way to make the stay enjoyable for them.
Traders on the beach can be a bit of a nuisance and the Masai Warriors did move them on ..but you cant go and lay on the beach without being disturbed...The tide goes out for miles and the shallow waters are very warm and ideal for rock pools ..the starfish are amazing...

Arriving from a Safari in Tanzania we stop for 4 days to rest in this resort. That was an amazing choice... Thanks to our tour operator in Italy, this pretty heaven on the beach is quiet, simple but it provides you the perfect pace to enjoy your time. The food is of the best experience we've ever had in our several vacations. And the weather helped a lot. Don't share too much time with the boys on the beach, they are a little boring and make you nervous... But anyway the sultan sands is away from the noisy crowdy resorts that are long this beautiful beach. You will love it!

Room Tip: We feel that the rooms on the garden are very quiet and very clean.

From the moment we arrived we were made welcome - I do not think I have ever come across such genuinely friendly and smiling hotel staff and contrary to some reviews nothing was too much trouble and everyone did their best for you.

The food was execellent withifferent themes each evening, and there was always wonderful fresh fish and once a week a fantastic seafood buffet on the beach by the pool.

Entertainment during the day consisted of such events as beach volleyball, beach football (with Masai's on the teams as well as those guests who wanted to join in. There was also guided walks to the village and local caves, water aerobics, Swahili lessons and a cookery class was also intoduced while we were there, which was a suggestion of a guest. We were impresed that the management listened to such suggestions and took them on board.

Each evening there were different forms of entertainment during dinner.

A special thanks to Frank and Angel in the bar and also Mohmmed, Salma and Margaret in the restaurant, although all the staff were great but there are too many to mention. Also a thank you Mr. David and to all who made our last evening so special with the surprise dinner, we will always remember it.

Room Tip: Rooms below 329 as after that they will be up te hill.

The holiday was organised by Virgin Holidays, it was a brilliant holiday, everything was organised by Virgin and the most amazing rep. "Musa". The rep could not do enough for you and nothing was to much trouble.
Sultan Sands is part of Blue Bay was amazing with food to die for, every night was a different theme, the accommodation was brilliant, with everything you needed.
The trips we did with Musa were informing, and fun, he explained everything you wanted to know about the island.
Thanks to Virgin and Sultan Sands.
