Great place to relax after 6 days of Safari on the northern route.

Excellent personal service, clean everywhere, everything works and a HUGE bungalow with the most fabulous view.

Strongly recommended although a bit heavy on the price, but its worth it (and you probably deserve it)

Room Tip: Since the bungalows are so HUGE....its actually quite a walk if you get a high number.....

Oh my. Where to start?! I think that it's testament to the quality of the hotel and the welcome from the staff that we were already starting to plan our return visit less than an hour after our arrival! This place really is a slice of heaven- superb food (the ginger cake! the salads! BBQ night! - I'm never going to fit into my wedding dress), relaxing and extremely comfortable bungalows (LOVE the free-standing bath and the double hammock bed on the terrace), brilliant staff (Sandy, Delphine and Peter stand out for particular praise). Our 6 days here flew by and we were so sad to leave- we asked to stay another night but they were (understandably) full. I would echo what other reviewers have said about the beach, however we're not really beach people so this didn't bother us in the slightest- the pool and our terrace more than sufficed. We went snorkelling at Mnemba twice whih was superb and also did the private trip which included snorkelling and a beautiful lunch on a private stretch of beach- absolute bliss. All in all, this was one of the best trips we've done and we will definitely be returning. Thank you to all at Matemwe for a brilliant getaway.

Choosing accommodation on Zanzibar is almost impossible! With so much on offer I almost needed a holiday after just having to choose one lovely location.

The mix of reviews on tripadvisor for Matemwe Lodge were slightly worrying as it seemed to be the same issues popping up very time... No need to worry! When we arrived as the first guests for the season absolutely every little issue had been addressed and rectified effectively.

The rooms were totally mozzie free (the excellent turn-down service every night ensured that), the beach was being raked and "cleaned" every morning and the staff and management were utterly faultless.

We adored everything about it but then we make the effort to search out places like this specifically because we aren't "resort" people and we just love a bungalow to ourselves.

The pools are not huge but who cares! It was intimate, the views were gorgeous, we swam every day and there was hardly anyone around. The double loungers were a great feature (by the pool and outside your bungalow).

And the best part of all? No pretentious rubbish! Everyone was relaxed, down-to-earth and friendly. We had been travelling in Africa for 4 months by the time we reached Zanzibar and we go absolutely everywhere in our knackered old beach clothes and flip flops... No one could have cared less! Brilliant!

Secluded beautiful retreat away from the crowds and tourists. The food is superb and the service is outstanding. This is a small property so be prepared to spend a lot of time with yourself and your travelling partner. But if down time is what you are seeking there is no better place than here. The bungalows are very comfortaably furnished and open up to the beach and a gorgeous sunrise. Every morning they quietly place a continental breakfast on your patio so when you awake you can enjoy the quiet ocean view before your day begins. We keep promising ourselves we will go back but Zanzibar is a long way away --

Room Tip: Pay extra for the beachfront

Each bungalow is divine, flowers everywhere, coconut on your arrival, nothing is too much for the staff. The sand is like flour, the food is fresh, beautifully spiced, varied and delicious. Had such a great time, wish I could stay longer, LUXURY.

First, let me say the idea of staying at anything remotely beach resort or "all inclusive" has always sounded like torture to me. Recently a group of coworkers convinced me I needed to open my mind and try Matemwe. I have to admit, I loved it. Matemwe is a small lodge, which was fantastic. Each hut feels private and looks out on the ocean and not a common area like a pool. I could have walked around topless if I'd wanted to. As a vegetarian, food is often an issue. Not at Matemwe. The food was fresh and amazing. A friend was eating a raw vegan diet and with no problem the chef cooked up something yummy for her at each meal. The Lodge excursions were all fun and well planned. All guides were solid and enjoyable. A friend was having a birthday and without asking the manager had arranged a private table and a cake ahead of time. On the day before when I asked about a birthday dinner, she said it was already taken care of. 5 star service or ESP? Either way, I was well taken care of. Drink prices were very reasonable and on check out there were no odd charges on our bill. I would recommend Matemwe to anyone and will hopefully find myself in Zanzibar again!

Room Tip: All huts are individual and all seem a equal in choice. Huts with lower numbers are closer to the m...

we paid about $300 per night for a couple. i think we got an excellent deal, and this seemed like a great value. this included all of our meals. we didn't leave in 4 days (we had intended to travel around the island, but it was too good to leave.)

pros:
-excellent bungalow, right on a bluff right on the water
-excellent staff. i lived in tanzania for 2.5y and never met such a professional group of locals. they were uniformly helpful, nice, and attentive to details in a way i have never seen before in the country.
-extreme attention to detail - really nothing was overlooked
-free wifi
-excellent food. mostly seafood.
-nice pool
-free kayaks, guided beach walk and village walk
-they are very chill about checking in early or leaving a little late

cons:
-no AC (if thats your thing)
-no TV (if thats your thing)
