“Third visit to this hotel”
Reviewed May 4, 2014

We have tried a couple of other places on the island, in Stone Town and down south, but this is such a good location and the resort is great value for money compared to the neighbors and quite a cool understated place to hang out. The different areas for relaxing, sunbathing, lounging in the pools…

The staff are excellent, well trained, very attentive. The diving is also excellent, my partner has learnt to dive with them. The food is delicious and I just love the tea at dawn (when we managed to get up and sundown is a nice touch. The beach remains the most fascinating and beautiful in the world for to date and hassle free!

We love to just completely chill out here for 6-7 nights, although with 3 nights you feel like new, as there are few other places nearby we always take the half board. My only request –perhaps– would be that some rooms be updated a little, a lick of paint, etc simple stuff but not too much is needed either!!

Room Tip: Double rooms at the back are nice and quiet. Rooms near the sea are older but nice and cool as well...

It is hard to fault this hotel except they are trying too hard! The rooms are funky, the beach and pool are great and the food is exceptional. Staff are extremely well trained and here the problem if any lies. No personality comes across from the staff except consummate robotic professionalism. There is a fine line between excellent service and trying too hard and then service starts to be uncomfortable. Keep the great service but relax a bit and then this hotel would be superb.

We enjoy 3 nights here in a triple room that has 1 single and 2 double beds with 2 good pillows and a large decorative pillow. Mosquito netting is provided for every bed. The bathroom is basic with a shower, with good water pressure, sink, and flush toilet.

Upon arrival we are greeted with a sweet spiced cold refreshment and the manager gives us a briefing on the property. There is wifi available at $5 per room per stay. There are some excursions on the resort, like 20 sailing ride or reef walk at low tide for $5 per person. There is a lovely large sitting area which featured low benches with lots of blue and purple pillows which we take advantage of frequently. Beside this is the dining area. All of the bedspreads, table cloths, light fixtures, furniture, and even the hats and coverups and soap that are provided for use are made locally in matemwe village. They also employ the services of the local villagers for most of their staff. The chef is from South Africa and is brilliant. There is laundry service available which is actually provided by the cleaning ladies directly for 500 shilling per item (about 35 cents) and is returned later that day.

The grounds have a small pool, a towel service, and poolside bar/restaurant. Right beside the grounds is a PADI dive/ snorkelling centre that has excursions and rentals available. We did use them for one snorkelling excursion to Mnembe atoll.

The food here is absolutely divine, definitely the best we had in all of Rwanda or Tanzania. We dine on fish, octopus, wraps, desserts, all wonderfully prepared and so delicious. The chef's name is mike and he checks on his diners to assure they are satisfied. On one day after he finds out I'm burned, he gives me his after sun lotion which I thought was very sweet and generous of him.

The beach itself is public, and quite often there is seaweed on the sand and in the water. A low tide, the woman of the village are nearby seaweed farming which can be interesting to watch. At high tide, swimming in the warm waters is nice. The sand on the beach is baby powder soft and soooo nice! We found the water to be a bit wavy and windy.

The staff have all been very friendly and welcoming. We also meet the owners when we are there, very lovely people.

For a moderate priced hotel, I would definitely recommend this place. I am very pleased with their "give back to the community " ideal of hiring local people and buying their goods. I should mention there is also a boutique with local goods for sale.

Working nearby and this 'hotel' was recommended by more than one colleague. We were not disappointed!!

The pool is sheltered but an easy walk to the softest and whitest sand I have seen. 3 courses every night made "eating-in" in the evening most attractive, food excellent. Fantastic upgrade to the 'Asali' (the honeymoon suite) was a fabulous surprise.

Got are real kick out of seeing one or two goats around the hotel gardens which really added to the character of the place. Went on the snorkeling trip and to our absolute delight we found hundreds of fish AND dolphins !!!!

Overall an amazing experience for guests and everybody we meet spoke in a similar vein. The staff couldn't do enough at every turn and when next working nearby will be begging to stay here again.

Room Tip: Room 7 was perfect

Good points:
The location is just perfect, set right on the beach which has the whitest sand I have ever seen and the sea is crystal clear. The hotel itself is quite small but this makes it more personal and you really get to know the staff who are very friendly and accommodating. The room we had to start off with was of a good standard and they have really thought of nice touches to make it that bit more special, every day they place flowers on the bed in a different design, there are great sarongs and hats for the ladies to use and the natural soaps are divine.
After 3 nights we were upgraded to the honeymoon suite called Asali, this was a complete surprise and a great end to our time at Matemwe. It is firstly, huge, so much space like a small villa. It has a big lounge area that is open on the front so you can look out onto the beach. There is a fab plunge pool in the middle of the lounge area which was perfect for cooling down. There is a kitchen, not that we used it and a bar so you can have drinks whenever you want. The bathroom is large and there are two showers – even one outside in a small garden area. It is really a wonderful room and I can’t recommend it enough.
The food should have a special mention as it really is of a high standard, being someone who is considered a good cook and quite critical. The breakfast options are considerable and there is something for everyone, I loved the egg and bacon roll with tomato relish! Lunch is quite limited but still there are enough options to suit most tastes and again the quality is high. Dinner is either served in the restaurant or by the pool dependent on the day of the week. When in the restaurant you have 3 choices of starters and main courses and every time we ate there it was extremely well cooked and presented. The nights when you dine by the pool they have embraced a good concept whereby people join together on tables and a buffet style meal is served. This was so nice as it gave us a chance to speak to other guests that we may not have spoken to otherwise. There was always a lot of choices and everything I tried was truly scrummy.
We had a massage one day (my husband and myself) and it was especially good. It was $80 for the two of us for one hour and we both thoroughly enjoyed it.

Areas to improve:
Rooms could benefit from better fans especially when the weather is hot you really appreciate some cooling down. The reception, restaurant and pool area have big cushions to sit on which are ideal when relaxing or taking a drink, but they seemed quite old and badly stuffed so not very comfortable. The pool area was quite nice but there weren’t many loungers and most of them had no shade so you are forced to lie in the blazing sun, I would suggest they purchase some umbrellas so people can decide if they want sun or not. Also the loungers are old and need to be replaced. There is not much space around the pool but there is an area where there are currently plants that could be used to extend the space for loungers. In the pool bar area the floor is sand and although this is ok I would prefer that this area was a stone or tile floor. Also it is a shame that when you are by the pool there is no way you can look out to the beach as there are too many trees and bushes obscuring the view. I strongly recommend that you take away some of these – there is nothing better than relaxing by the pool on a lounger and looking out to the most beautiful beach.
There are paths to the rooms and beach and these are all surrounded with gardens that I have to say were needing some attention. In the information file in the room it mentions that the gardens may not look so nice but this is because they want to conserve water; which I think is more of an excuse. The reason I say this is because we went to another hotel just a short walk away for lunch one day and they had exactly the same type of plants but were very well kept and maintained. We met the manager at that hotel and started talking and complimented her on the garden and she told us these plants didn’t require any water! Please Matemwe – clean up your garden areas!!
I was happy to see there was a small shop on site but disappointed when I saw what was available – basically not much. This is a missed opportunity, for example you could sell the sarongs like you have in the rooms, I would have definitely bought some and I heard other guests say the same. Also you had great wooden salt and pepper dishes (in the restaurant) and weaved food protectors (used at breakfast for the fruit etc.) that would also sell well. It would be great to see a real selection of Zanzibar treats to buy.

To summarize, this is a good place to spend vacation in Zanzibar, but with some small tweaks could be a truly amazing place.

Room Tip: Asali Suite is the best!

After spending 5 days on a Safari in Tanzania, camping in the middle of the Serengeti we were so ready for a little bit of luxury....
Originally we had booked a Shamba Suite but the hotel (or our tour operator) very kindly upgraded us to the Asali Suite. We were absolutely thrilled to bits as it was gorgeous, plenty of space to relax, chill and to get out of the sun! Flowers on the bed each day, candles lit in the evening and blinds closed every night and morning was a lovely touch! It certainly was romantic and exactly what we we had imagined from our expectations. There was nothing better than waking up each morning to the sound of the sea rolling in....
The private sunbeds, plunge pool and mini bar also meant we didn't have to go far to have everything we needed!
The staff are wonderful, so friendly and attentive! The food was also good although after 5 days the menu looked as though it started to repeat itself.
Not a great deal to do around the hotel, the sea isn't brilliant to swim in with the tides, rocks and seaweed but we took a trip out snorkelling one day to escape another pool day which was fun.
My only criticism about MBV is the lack of complete shade around the pool, even under the banda's we still managed to catch the sun....
If you are looking for somewhere to spend your honeymoon or a special occasion then look no further as the Asali Suite at MBV will tick all the right boxes.....

Room Tip: If you want the best room, book the Asali Suite it is worth the extra!
