“Memorable days at Panga Chumvi”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 23, 2012

The name itself is intriguing (for Swahili people) and the place is well situated along the beautiful Eastern Coast of Zanzibar. It's a place for those who want to enjoy a quiet holiday. No discos here. There is a restaurant serving well chosen dishes. The price is reasonable with sizeable portion. Mr. Othman with his personnel were always friendly and accomodating. Plenty of time for reading. And for those who want to check something in the net: the wi-fi is working. There are some activities around. My daughter finished her diving course around here. The rooms are clean and hot water was always there. The sunrise experiance and watching some school children going to school by using a short cut along the beach usher a new dawn. It was a memorable Stay for us!

We recently stayed at Panga Chumvi and had an absolutely amazing time. We upgraded to one of the rooms right on the waterfront and it was really worth the extra cost. Waking up just before sunrise to the sound of the high tide was magical enough, but emerging from our room to views like the ones some of those rooms have was breathtaking.

We were welcomed immediately on arrival and introduced to Rachel and the waitress working that afternoon. As other reviews have said, Rachel is incredibly forthcoming in advice for things to do, and in the end we went snorkelling, on a sunset dhow trip, a spice farm tour and had some henna done all on her recommendation and none disappointed.

The room was lovely, with a beautiful huge bed dominating a simple and clean space. The flowers to welcome us to our room (and again on the evening of a birthday) were a lovely touch that added a real personal touch.

The are itself was also lovely. White sand beaches and no-one to disturb you makes it the perfect getaway (don't head here if you're looking for a party). Often the only people in sight were local women harvesting seaweed. We were also really impressed with the plans Rachel has for making the site more sustainable - ask her about it if you get the chance!

On reflection (and we were nit-picking here), we felt that a couple of aspects let the place down slightly. The food wasn't great and compared to other places just up the beach, some of the dishes were disappointing. Training for the staff to smile more would have been welcome too - a couple seemed a little grumpy at times! We also felt that a few small touches in the rooms (like some nice quality toiletries instead of the standard wrapped bar of soap, and more space for hanging towels and storing toiletries) would really have taken the hotel from amazing to perfection.

Having said that, we thought that Panga Chumvi had been going for much longer than a year, and given how new it is, those small touches that have yet to be achieved are totally understandable and really didn't influence the quality of our holiday much.

Overall, a brilliant stay that made us feel like we'd found paradise.

Room Tip: If you can afford it, go for a beach-front room.

From initial emails with Rebecca I knew we were onto a winner. The communication was fast, efficient and all my (many!) questions were answered. When your diver gets to the cross roads in the Matemwe village he has the option to trun left or right as there are other resorts along the beach. You must turn right. Apparently they are waiting for sa new sign to be put up but Panga Chumvi is definitely there! This was one of our favourite beaches we visited. We went to Kendwa also and yes, you can swim all the there but there are also lots of peopl, beach boys that constantly turn up etc etc In Panmga Chumvi you feel like you are on the beach alone. The hotels are positioned in a way that you just dont see them , which is great. You can swim in the early morning and evening. The rest of the day we went to see the local people seaweed farming which was fascinating. You can also go anorkelling with a very good local centre, Ocean Divers. They are based at a different resort where there is in fact a pool, so if you are staying at Panga Chumvi and really want to swim , you can always go there and use thier pool (if you have a meal or a drink). We did this twice and then walked back to Panga Chumvi along the beach, which in itself was a lovely thing to do.
We had the best view of the sea we have ever had anywhere, just from our bed. Our sea front bungalow was huge. It was veary clean and well mantained and simply but nicely decorated, the general look being quite "chic" in its simplicity. The beds were really comfortable and the bedlinen soft too which is always a worry! Our son had his own little area at the back of our room.
The maids and restaurant staff were charming and Rebecca, the manager is doing a great job.
They try to involve the local community in the business as much as they can also, which is nice to know.
You can order your meals in advance for any time you like, which saves from waiting at the table.

Room Tip: Definitely the Sea front bungalow for the best wake up view ever

By far the best thing about Panga Chumvi is its location. It is a slice of paradise just south of some of the bigger resorts. Unfortunately for the people of Matemwe, but luckily for us, most of the hotels around Panga Chumvi have been shut down due to lack of business, so while relaxing on the beach our first day in front of Panga Chumvi the only people we saw were one other couple staying at Panga Chumvi, local children walking to school and ladies harvesting seaweed, and teh occasion local cycling somewhere. No one tried to sell us anything! You couldn't ask for anything more idyllic. The only person who spoke to us, was a school girl practising saying "Good morning, how are you?" in English. Go before others get in on the secret and crowd into this paradise!

As for Panga Chumvi itself, it is well run, maintained and very clean. The staff is very helpful and organised a great snorkelling trip through a local fisherman (exactly the same as through the larger companies, but cheaper). The restaurant has a tasty and reasonably priced dinner w well priced beer and wine as well. It was perfect for us and at a very reasonable price. However if you are expecting a high end resort, this is not it. It is a well-run mid-range spot at a 5 star location!

Panga Chumvi is a very good place for a family. The family room is just near the beach (30 meters from room to the sea) and you can see your kids play in the lagoon from your veranda of bedroom.
White sand, coconut, beautiful house, charm family room wait you.
Restaurant is good and the Staff is helpful.
The staff know very well everybody at Matemwe and they are able to solve a probleme with the authorities of Matemwe. Thank you again for that.

Room Tip: Family room in the big house (Floor level) in front of the sea

Panga Chumvi is a small hotel in Matemwe nestled a few miles south of the bigger resorts...but it has the same stunning Zanzibari view. For those looking for a hotel with a pool and all of the usual western amenities, look elsewhere. For those looking for a small, quaint, very very quiet hotel (that is more of an Inn), Panga Chumvi could be your spot. The staff stays out of your way, which I suppose could be misinterpreted as being non-attentive, but I think they are just trying to let you enjoy your stay at whatever pace you want. The food is good, I'd recommend the calamari with curry sauce. They have wifi but the connection wasn't that fast. The rooms are average but definitely clean and well-maintained. As long as you understand that Panga Chumvi is an Inn and not a western-style resort, you will be happy.
There is a great walk down the beach to the village of matemwe where the locals are.

We spend two nights at Pango Chumvi and really enjoyed the relaxed and quiet atmosphere. We would have stayed much longer if I had more time. It is a simple place, very quiet, right on the beach (very low tide at some point of the day,but this is common to Zanzibar) but at high tide it was great to swim!

We had a room with a beach view. It was very simple but nice and really clean.
Food is very good but somehow the choice is restricted to two choices, most likely because it was low season and there were few guests. But the staff is very friendly and tries to accommodate guests' needs.

Panga Chumvi is located near Matemwe village, about 1 hour ride from Stonetown and the road is in very good condition. It costs 40 USD each way.

A deposit of 50% is requested for booking and can be paid through paypal. I struggled a bit to register on the site, but the staff I was in contact with was very nice and patient.
The only downside is that the entire food menu is in USD and the bill is later converted if you want to pay in TZ Shillings.

I strongly recommend this place for people looking for a quiet and relaxed holiday far from big beach resorts.

Room Tip: The two storey building you see on the website picture was not used for guest at the time of my visi...
