We stayed at Panga Chumvi for one week with the aim of doing very little and had a really relaxing time. The atmosphere is friendly with Wendy the manager making sure we had all we needed. Each day we had our meals cooked by Sulieman, the chef who makes a range of dishes with lots of fish and calamari, he also does a good steak. Try the Pumkin, Coconut and Ginger soup, it’s really good.

Panga Chumvi is about 1hr drive from Stone Town by taxi and Wendy can recommend a taxi to you. The resort is going through some renovations so they now have a nice decking area where the restaurant is being developed; each night we sat on the decking under the stars, which are really clear if you ask to have the lights turned off after dinner. Sometimes the power does go off “naturally” at the resort, but rarely for longer than an hour or so and they can kick in the generator when needed.

We had one of the rooms in the top section of the house. It was clean and roomy, with mosquito net, on-suite and wireless internet. The balcony was great to sit and read for hours when the tide is low; out the front are sun beds and hammocks to pass the time away.

Swimming is possible at high tide only. Check with Wendy to see when the tide is the highest and you can stay in the clear water for a few hours each day; we had some days when we could swim both in the morning and evening; during the day the water can be quite warm. Take your reef shoes (I used Crocs) if you plan on exploring the reef because as you head further into the water there are lots of sea urchins.

The area is very quite with not much else to do close by, though admittedly we did not want to explore much. There are some tours Wendy can organise like snorkelling and spice tours.

We had a perfect time at Panga Chumwi where you have everything you need for a stay plus the most peaceful, quite and friendly atmosphere you can imagine.

The rooms are clean, the beds are big and everything is comfortable and tasteful. You have sunbeds on the beach, hammocks in the palm tree garden and a beautiful view on the sea from everywhere.
You can choose your dinner or/and lunch, which means the chef will chef will cook what you desire and it will always be delicious :-)
Wendy, who runs the place is an awsome person who always finds a solution and helps with everything you need. She knows people at a diving center and helped us to organise our dives at the Mnemba atoll, hiring bicicles and much more.
She was like a friend and during the time we were staying at her place we all felt like a big family at home in paradise!
The place is more than recommendable!

Stumbled upon this isolated paradise escape (rare in Zanzibar these days!) completely by accident but would recommend it to any couple wanting a quiet, beautiful and romantic escape that doesn't break the bank. It felt like our 'fully serviced' paradise house home away from home.
There are currently 3 en-suite rooms in a newly built/finished villa which is very tastefully decorated with beautiful flowers arranged on the bed each night. It is right next to the beach, and far enough away from any other hotel along the beach. If you are lucky, like us, you will have it all to yourself.
Wendy, the manager, is an amazing and bubbly person keeping you entertained and taken care of at all times. I would call her your 'cool aunt'. There is a cook who will make you almost whatever you want for breakfast, lunch and dinner and it is always delicious and locally caught or grown.
Wendy also knows the local scuba centres so helped us get a spot on a boat going out the next day.
If trying to find it on your own or telling a taxi you'd probably never find it. You would need to be picked up or get directions in real time.
I would definitely recommend this paradise home away from home to couples, or friends, looking for a beautiful and secluded paradise with a touch of real time entertainment :)

We have been at Panga Chumvi for 5 days in september. It was great! We were the only guests and it was very relaxed. We had the beautiful beach to our selves.
The manager Wendy was very friendly and she and her chefs arranged delicous Swahili meals for us every time. When we arrived Wendy told us we could name what we wanted to have for diner and they would make it. Instead we decided to let Wendy an the chefs decide. And that did not disappoint.
The room was very nice with a good bed, fan and airco and a spacious bathroom with a good shower.
All in all we are convinced we made th right choice choosing Panga Chumvi over the other hotels in Matemwe.

This small hotel in Matemwe is in the middle of nowhere (and rather difficult to find) but once you are there, you don't want to leave. Ever helpful and fun Wendy runs the hotel mainly because she enjoys it and it shows! You feel more like a guest in her home and, as she's almost always around, no query goes unanswered, no wish unfulfilled.

In terms of value for money, this place is a cut above the rest. The rooms are fitted with handmade Zanzibari furniture and they are clean and comfortable. Snap them up while they're still under 100 dollars per room.

Suleyman cooks up some great dinners - it's definitely worth staying for the evening meal.
