If you want to chill in a superb hotel situated by a fantastic long powder sand beach that runs endlessly and take timeout sipping cocktails at the swimming pool bar some couple of centimetres from the pool, then Azanzi is King. Scratch that, Louis the accountant is King – hilarious, extremely efficient, friendly and low key guy in his own way who works hard during the day and has a beer entertaining the guests at night (totally disagree with last reviewer, he's a gentleman). This hotel was built by Greg and Cara who stayed there while we were visiting –what a truly incredible job they did – I’m a fusspot but there is little to whine about. The hotel is spotless, which we loved. Management and the building team were sincere, friendly people who know how to have fun. Mostly couples from late 20’s up, some with kids stayed here. No sign of any riff-raff, we met some very successful modest career people staying here. Our ultra spacious room (125) had a huge balcony with great views of the palms and sea (even when lying flat on the bed). We were rewarded with an upgrade and paid $100 pppn fully inclusive of breakfast, lunch and dinner and wait for it …. Free local beers (great!), boxed wine, soft drink & water for the entire stay + airport transfers. You don’t have to put your hand in your pocket if so desired! We thought it the bargain of a lifetime. Despite the relaxing, we met loads of people to the point where we all danced on at least 3 out of 7 nights – great fun. The spotless rooms have air con and a fan beneath the mosi net. Service, even when the hotel was full is top notch – the most wonderful genuine people who are really well trained by management, credit to them also. If you’re walking the beach turn right rather than left (township further up on left side where there are some unusual bodily habits!). The sea is warm and the beach endless with great sand. The locals plant seaweed (small leaves which didn’t effect our enjoyment of the sea at all) and there are urchins but these are further out to sea (if you’re really unnecessarily paranoid the hotel has rubber shoes for your precious toes). The TV room has satellite TV for the rugby (well done SA!) and shoot me if it gets crowded during the match – one of the earlier reviewers needs some tranquillisers! Power cuts happened each night at 7pm for 17 seconds when the generator took over (courtesy of the Zanzibar government). No need for a 4 x 4, road is bumpy and much has been tarred recently. We took the No 118 “dara dara” into centre of stone town for all of 1 Euro (60 mins drive from right outside the hotel, you can ask to get front seats but more fun in the back and not for the faint hearted but well worth it to get a taste of the real people and chickens!). We hired our own guide for a spice tour – great fun and definitely worth doing even above Stone Town which is crumbling but intriguing for a few hours. Regarding the other whines we read – there is a soap dish in the rooms, the PC was working fine, plenty of loungers were available, all in all food was very, very good (few ordinary dishes from time to time but there was ALWAYS something very nice to eat at each meal). The one point I would agree on is the turn down time of 6pm – agreed, it would be better to turn down when guests are eating. Whatever you do get the deep tissue massage – everyone loved it and it cost but $30.My strong tip would be to bring US$ cash to the hotel as all transactions are done in dollars ONLY and the exchange rate otherwise is not good. You’ll thank me! Finally, BRAVO Louis, Brian, Michelle Greg & Cara – this holiday was one of the very best we had and the Hotel is really super.
