We arrived in a sticky and hot Zanzibar after about a 4 hour flight from Johannesburg, South Africa a little apprehensive about our adventure. This was highlighted by the fact that our luggage got left in good old South Africa by our national carrier SAA. Yeah we thought this is certainly going to be one of those vacations. The guys from Coastal Aviation (the small planes for the quick hop over to Zanzibar) at Dar es Salaam airport were more than helpful and although we had to leave without the basic essentials, they promised to have it in Zanzibar soon. They made good on this promise!
So our vacation started with a quiet promise that things can only get better. And it certainly did. The people in Zanzibar are for the most welcoming and friendly, if you'll excuse the constant attention seeking to make an honest living. Zanzibar is beautiful and Nungwi even more so! This is not a luxury holiday by any stretch of the imagination so if you're squirmish it's best you stick to the beaten track. Nungwi has many gems, from the delicious meals at Jumbo Brothers Restaurant (right on the water's edge) to the amazing diving adventures of East Africa Diving (thanks to Dalene for all the underwater stories I can share with my friends).
From being apprehensive at the start of the holiday to being completely bowled over at the end. We left Zanzibar with a tear in the eye but fond memories in the heart. This is one vacation spot that should be on everyone's to do list at least once in a lifetime. Oh and we will do it again!!
