“Great value for Zanzibar”
Reviewed November 6, 2010

Beautiful location, good restaurant and very reasonable prices, although the cost will be going up quite a bit starting in Jan/11 (from $50/night for a garden view room to around $80/night - the other rooms increasing accordingly as well). Great front desk staff, can arrange transport and tours. Free wireless internet - was on and off during our stay but that seemed like it might have been unusual.

Water is only high enough to swim at certain times of the day. Likewise, walking on the beach is only possible the opposite times.

Gorgeous little thach-roofed huts most of which face directly onto the ocean- its like something out of a postcard. On arrival we were greeted with a glass of tropical juice served in a coconut, complete with hibiscus flower garnish! The rooms are very clean, serviced daily, and the bed was very comfortable. The resort has a restaraunt which serves a mostly western menu for breakfast lunch and dinner and the food is reasonably good-our seafood was overcooked, but otherwise quite tasty. The restaraunt however is how they make their money- with a captive consumer market. There are not many other food options in Nungwi, and stonetown is a good hour and a half away by taxi.

The service is pretty good too. We had an issue paying our bill by Visa, and the receptionist blamed us (he was convinced that our card was faulty), but it turned out that it was actually his machine- we recieved no apology! Besides this one incident however, we were very happy with the service.

If you are looking for a fun and/or adventurous holiday, this place is not for you. The resort is small and the other travellers staying here were predominantly introverted couples, most spending the day lazing on the beach-beds reading books. Again, the isolation of this end of the island is such that there aren't many other choices for things to do in and/or around Nungwi.

If on the other-hand, reading books under the beatiful african sun on an island in the midlle of the Indian Ocean is your thing, I highly recommend Tanzanite.

Not sure what to expect on the drive to the hotel but once we arrived it was amazing. Well kept grounds and incredibly friendly staff. Given a welcome drink on arrival. Breakfast was complimentary every morning and included just about anything you wanted as well as fresh local fruit and juices. The staff make your stay relaxing and pleasant. I would return here tomorrow.

Tanzanite is the perfect beach resort. isolated from mainstream Nungwi but close enough to go and enjoy the nightlife. Wonderful service. Everything is beautiful and clean.

Cannot recommend this enough and we will be going back!

We spent 6 nights at the Tanzanite, and loved it. Quite, secluded, clean and friendly. We were given welcome drinks on arrival - fresh passion fruit juice, and shown to our spotless room with flowers on the bed. We stayed in a garden-facing room, it was just perfect. Complimentary breakfast with eggs, toasts, fresh fruit, juice and coffee. The water is beautifully clean, and the walks down the beach were wonderful. The food was delicious - good local seafood, and vegetarian options too! The staff was incredibly friendly and easy going.

We used the dive shop at the Tanzanite to go on a few dives, two at Mnembe Atoll. The divers and boaters were great, friendly, funny and knowledgeable! We also used the tours offered and took the Spice Tour (highly recommended) and the Stonetown tour, both of which were great.

Overall, Tanzanite was a wonderful place to spent a week, and we had a GREAT time!

This resort was such a pleasant surprise. Just don’t be scared by the poor condition of the road leading to the hotel. Once you get into the hotel the world changes. The hotel is located a bit outside of Nungwi, but you can take a nice walk (2o min) on the beach to get to Nungwi. The room was basic (we had the one for 50 USD) but clean, with the mosquito net, hot shower and a fan. They are offering laundry service. The beach restaurant was very good. It is located right on the beach, with the dining hall having a sea view. The breakfast (included in the price) was just amazing. But every meal was very tasteful and worth every penny. For the price you pay you get a lot. So no complaints here.

The atmosphere at the hotel was amazing. They will make one show a week (there was a local dance group performing when we were there). Every day after dinner they make a fire, so you can sit down, drink cocktails and just relax. You also have free internet available. The beach itself is not swimmable most of the day (because of the tide), but you can take a short walk to the proper beach.

Although the hotel itself is very nice, the most amazing thing about it is its staff. Before we went we were reading reviews about the hotel and everyone were praising the service at the hotel. Back then we were questioning if this is really true, but now we can say that it really is. Everyone is being so helpful, smiling all the time. They will help you with everything you need. They even went to Stone town just to get us a ticket for the ferry. They also drove us to Kendwa at night, were partying with us and waiting when we’ll have enough. They are also organising tours around the island. The hotel is managed by Anuar who is really an amazing person, really knows how to run the business. All the time you can see that they are there for you. We must say (and we’re not overreacting) that we can’t remember when was the last time we were at the hotel where the guests were treated the way we were.

So at the end, we would like to say thanks once again to all the staff working at Tanzanite, especially Anuar. You were all really great and we wish you all the best. We just hope one day we’ll be able to return to amazing Zanzibar and Tanzanite beach resort. And for everyone thinking of where to stay on Zanzibar for a very reasonable price, don’t think and book at Tanzanite. You won’t regret it.

Regards from Slovenia,

Tjasa & Rok

I stayed here for 4 nights after climbing Kili. All the staff were great and made my stay more enjoyable - the guy who picked me up at the airport, the reception team, the kitchen and bar team, the cleaning team... they were all really friendly and helpful.

The hotel was quiet - a perfect place to relax. It is right on the beach and you can walk in either direction - either to Nungwi for a bit more action, or the other way which is very quiet. The hotel also have a full range of tours if you want to explore, I did a half day tour of Stone Town which I would recommend.

The hotel was clean and the food was good. I would definitely recommend it.
