“Overpriced, poor food (hygiene)”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 12, 2014 via mobile

Zanzibar with its beautiful ocean was wonderful, however the Amaan Bungalows are to be avoided.

Firstly, the food was poor in comparison with other hotels and restaurants in the same vicinity. Basic hygiene standards were not adhered to either in the kitchen or the restaurant itself.

The rooms were basic and very poor, however the view from the sea facing room was amazing, particularly at sunset time.

Essentially they are very profit focused and aim to squeeze as much from you as they can whilst you are there which isn't in line with the service and quality you would expect for the price compared to other hotels in the locality.

Avoid at all costs.

The complex has great atmosphere, especially pool area and restaurant are in good location and fun to hang out at. They are one of the few places that play some music by the pool as well. Unfortunately they charge too much for that in my view. For the same price the basic garden room doesn't have AC, is smaller and not as nice as right next door. For a comparable room with AC they charge 45$ extra.... Really unfortunate, else it would be a fantastic place in Nungwi!

Zanzibar is somewhere I have always wanted to visit. I was thrilled to finally get there. I did not arrive at tje hotel until 10pm, and I was really impressed that I was still able to get dinner. Thankfully it is not a buffets, but A la carte, so I was able to get a great meal at that time. My room was great, lovely view over the swimming pool and the ocean, I was thrilled to get a mini fridge in my room as well. The staff were good, but a few spoke very little English, so at times there were communication issues. Buffet breakfast was good, no bacon as this is Islamic, but lots of other choices, so it wasn't missed. I had Lobster every day that was beautiful, in all different style's, this was a real highlight, as it was very well priced.
Great value, the most beautiful location, enjoyed the coffee shop as well, and being able to buy an ice cream was wonderful.

We stayed at the Amaan Bungalows last June. We found the hotel better than we expected, the staff were friendly and aimed to please.

The restaurant was a bit disappointing, the food generally took a very long time to come once ordered. The quality was inconsistent, however the view over the water was breath taking.

The staff were happy to move us to another room with two single beds. The aircon worked nicely - in the heat of Zanzibar I think this was a life-saver! The bathroom needed improving as the shower rail was coming apart and there was damp covering most of the walls.

We found the proximity to the other hotels was great, we enjoyed walking along the pathway at night and choosing different restaurants. The prices are definitely aimed at the tourist market, we found there was little value for money. The curries were delicious and we particularly enjoyed the seafood buffets.

We had a great time, I would definitely recommend the Amaan Bungalows for a pleasant, reasonable holiday.

Room Tip: The Garden rooms are quieter as they are away from the busy pool area, although, the delux rooms wer...

Very unkind and unhelpful staff. The first night we got a garden room that was completely surrounded by other rooms, so there was almost no air coming in (don't take room G17). Without A/C and with a fan that didn't work well too hot to sleep. Next day we wanted to move to a deluxe room with A/C (deluxe is the upgrade that comes right after the garden rooms), but when we saw it, we concluded it was definitely not worth the requested $125. The best price they could give us was $100 but also that's way too much for a dark and very basic room with bad A/C. Nothing ‘luxurious‘ about it. We decided to move to another garden room, but also that was a hassle. Finally we got G15 and slept well. The plus is that the rooms are clean and the beds are big with good mattresses. Both the garden room and deluxe are very dark, but we got a garden room for $60, which was fair considering the nice swimming pool and views from the restaurant terrace. The beach is stunning! The pool and sea view rooms are much more expensive, but much lighter. However, they are just as small as the other rooms so I wouldn't want to spend my money on them. Instead, go next door to Z hotel or langi langi if you can afford it, but book in advance! Also don't eat at Amaan, the food is tasteless and very overpriced.

T-Koomen, thank you very much for your response. All our room rates for the types of rooms we have are always available in our website. we have given details of all rooms that we have, the garden rooms have no Ac and it is clearly indicated in this room category. All our rooms are most selling and if it happened that a fan was not working, we have a technician who works 24 hours. The technician is ready available for rectifying any fault that occurs when the guest is in the room or we alternatively give another room if the fault will take a lot of time to sort out.

The guest is always a king and we thank you for this response.

I traveled from Nigeria and stayed 3 nights at Amaan Beach Bungalows, Nungwi Beach, Zanzibar. I had a great experience. The staff are very nice, warm and welcoming. The environment, rooms and services rendered are perfect! Also, the General Manager Mr. Gilbert, is a great host! I will definitely visit Amaan Beach Bungalows again.

Bola, Nigeria.

We ended our 2 week holiday with 5 days in Nungwi and stayed here. The room was clean, simple and stylish, but closer inspection shows that some of the workmanship is a bit bodged! Breakfast buffet was okay but not brilliant, it would have been great to actually have fresh coffee at breakfast rather than instant.

The pool was very good with easy access to the beautiful beach with its perfect white sands.

We would be happy to stay here again next time we visit Nungwi.
