First, i would not go against other reviews. The hotel has lovely grounds with a great beach (so many fishes in a couple of feet of water) and a sizeable swimming pool. The restaurants are good with varied food. Wines are of good quality (South African's).

Barring in mind that one is basically on a ("relatively") poor island off the coast of Africa, the standards of the hotel are rather impressive...

A couple of tips though. On arrival in our room (standard on the ground with two more floors above us), we found it very dark and actually quite opressive. Being on upper floors with a terrace would have improve matters quite a bit. But more importantly, the air conditioning was not working properly. Afer a couple of complaints at the reception and no changes, we asked to speek to the hotel manager. Not only did we find him very amenable but he also upgraded up to a suite on the top level which drastically improved our stay compared to the standard with.

In short, maybe worth a try if you are disappointed with some characteristics of your stay as managment clearly seems to be receptive to client's perspectives, which is not the case everywhere.

We stayed here mid May, after a weeks safari in Tanzania. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here.
We found all the staff, from bar staff, waiters, beach staff and security guards, all to be friendly and polite and willing to help, serve or hold a pleasant conversation with you from the first Jambo.
The hotel has lovely grounds with a great beach, swimming pool and there were loads of sun beds to choose from with plenty of shade, allowing you lots of space to lay quietly to read your book. The beach and pool area was cleaned constantly and remained immaculate.
All the meals were excellent with plenty to choose from and especially enjoyed the pizza restaurant for a more intimate meal for two.
The food is very varied, with various salads, hot meals, separate cooking stations and everything to please all palates.
Our room had an excellent sea view and balcony with a patio area to enjoy the sunset.
In all we enjoyed our time here in this excellent hotel in a stunning location with its friendly staff and would recommend it to anyone who wants a quiet, relaxing and pampered holiday.

Just returned from a one week break at La Gemma Dell est.

Location - excellent
Beach / sea - excellent - however they are doing some dredging and buidling sea defences while I was there.
All inclusive - very good, included brand name drinks, mini bar, ice creams, coicktails etc etc. Good value for money.
Food - very good. Although maybe you will get bored after 2 weeks !
Staff - friendly and helpful
Bad points - lots of mosqituos so take repellent - maybe due to the rains?
Main pool is closed - 10% discount was offered while we were there. Some people complained and got a free upgrade to a suite. They were also trying to get 20% + some free trips.
Workmen - there are a lot of people working in the hotel doing up rooms etc. They are very friendly, and not too noisy however they are around so its a bit strange.
Weather - it was terrible while we were there, 6 days out of 7 rained constantly. Global Warming seems to be causing havoc.
Beach boys - so much better than Kenya. They just ask a few questions and leave you alone. In Mombassa tyhey were very annoying, but here they were fine.
Scuba Diving - only managed a shore dive due to the weather but was good. Staff are good, cost 45 euros.
Gym is ok, they have enough free weights but not any real benches to use them properly which is silly.
OInternet access - 5 euros for an hour 3 euros for mins. Must be used in the same day. They have 2 computers. Speed was OK. Not great.
I would go back for sure, if i went to Zanzibar however only when the building work is finished.

my family and friends stayed here last summer for my brothers wedding and it was amazing!

we were lucky as we got upgraded to the presidential suite where 10 of us stayed with our own butler! but the hotel itself was loveyl - the service was brilliant cocktails and the food was great - fresh and always something a bit different to try.

we were the largest wedding party they'd had by a long way so it was all new to them but the day was lovely and they made a real effort to make it special.

was defiately 5 star and beautiful - would definately go back (if i could afford it again!)

Please note, if your Travel Agent or Tour Operator has not advised you, this has just been confirmed for me by the hotel. The tour operator should pass on the discounted rate given by the hotel during the renovation period. The small pool will be available to all guests, whereas it is normally restricted access.

This is extremely disappointing to find this out at such a late stage (through Vicky's review on TripAdvisor), as we would defintely have gone to Mapenzi which was our other option!!! :-((( We arrive there on Tuesday so this is not a good start at all!!
