This is a fantastic hotel above and beyond of what we thought. Me and my wife stayed for 10 days in November 2011 and had the most incredible time! I highly reccommend this hotel
The staff are so warm and helpful and they always made sure that we had everything that we needed! As guests we felt safe, welcome and taken care of from day one.
The rooms are amazing and the food in the restaurants were amazingly delicious.

We already dream about going back one day because of their high quality standards and the sweet feeling of being home far from home.

We will definitely be back. Maria & Jeremy from London.

We stayed in this cosy little hotel in November for two weeks. This made us really long stay guests. The cottage was small but neat and cosy. We had a twin room and the beds were comfortable. All the public areas are clean and well up-kept.
Every single person we met was very friendly, always willing to deliver fabulous service and they gave us the feeling to be not just another guest but friends.... this is as well the logo on the bar shirts... Come as a tourist, leave as a friend.
The beach is great, even if you are not always able to swim, depending to the tides. During low tide, we walked towards the Riff, and we saw soooo beautiful star fish.
This vacation was just relaxing!!!
In the evenings we were sitting in the bar and playing the local game bao. When I tried to learn Kiswaheli, every ingle person was helping me.
I just can repeat: This is such a beautiful spot on earth!!!
Thanks a lot for the great time to Yussuf and his team....
We will be back!!!! Tutaonana barai

We stayed 2 days only at Mnarani in August. We had already been in the country 2 weeks and had stayed at Matemwe beach Zanzibar 4 days before this. Mnarani is more structured and has less expansive grounds, but the place is spotless. We were in the 3 story building with a sunset/sunrise deck above , and a great balcony right out front.
The room had a good A/C unit, was well decorated but not over the top. Food here is good and fairly plentiful, breakfast has a omlette station, lunch you are on your own and diner is varied. There was a great evening of live Tarab music from some students at the Conservatory in Stonetown.
The location is secluded from the town, there are no hawkers hassling you. The beach has limited tide dependent access. It's rather closed in, and I would walk west for more space. You can walk westward for about 20 min. past the Dhow ship building area then you get into Nungwi town, for diving, visiting the local eateries or stocking up on supplies or gifts.
The grounds at Mnarani are very peaceful and super well manicured, and they even have a seldom used " Finnish Sauna". There did not seem to be a lot to do but if you need a good value place to chill near the water, this is worth a stay, especially for families and couples. It is definitely not a singles type place.
I think many people use agents or come with a package.I booked the place myself and had to wire all the funds in advance, which was the most annoying part of the whole experience ( and costly) . I met the owner who was a very nice guy from nearby Pemba Island, he said they do not give African registered companies Pay pal accounts. I think they could take Credit Cards as other hotels do, though to hold the reservations.
I'd recommend this for a north shore stay, you can get where ever you need to on that end of the island easily, and return to the safety and quiet of this secluded spot .

This place is a series of small but super clean bungalows and rooms that are on a shallow cliff overlooking the Indian Ocean. The gardens are really pleasant, there is a pool and great sea access at high tide. At low tide the beach combing is dreamlike. You'd think you were in the south pacific.

The rooms vary in size and some are nearer to the sea, so ask for what you want. The prices also vary according to the room, but some of the cheaper rooms near the sea are more pleasant than the super deluxe ones!

The cafe/Bar and food are all good. Don't expect the gourmet chow of some Paris restaurant, and you'll be very pleasantly surprised. Buffet at breakfast and dinner and no one seemed disappointed.

The Chap who runs this place is called Nassor, and he lives on site, and it shows. We had a nice chat with him, and he really seems to take care of his people, and his guests. Nungwi is a fairly rumbustous place, and this place is super calm, super relaxed, totally unpretentious.

I dived with Scubado Dive Centre, (who were perfect) but this place also works with East African Divers. I dived with EADC a long time ago, and they were also very good. It does not matter which company you choose- both are professional, safe and hospitable. And I know - I dive for a living.

Room Tip: Choose the low cost bungalows by the sea- they are small but idyllic.

We stayed at Mnarani Beach Cottages for a week in a superior room (Zanzibar house). We had a great time and really enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere and the ocean view. The staff was very friendly and helpful and the bar area is a great place to have lunch and to spend the afternoons with a beer. The walks along the beach during low-tide and the ad-hoc meetings with locals was also really nice. And the local owner brought impressive acrobats and music entertainment to the facilities. So why does not the hotel receive a higher rating from us? Well, some of the reasons are a strange smell in our room, holes in the mosquito net, a noisy air-conditioner, bad cleaning, no possibility to open windows on one side to let the wind blow through, and poor food for dinner several of the days (why not go for the Swahili/Zanzibar-style every day). With proper attention paid to these drawbacks the hotel could surely receive a 4, not too far from a 5, from us!
