Beautiful little hotel in beautiful surroundings. We found our stay relaxing and comfortable and would recommend this place to any one. The staff were friendly and attentive and always polite. The rooms were clean and Spacious. Situated close to restaurants and bars with stunning views out to sea. Would definitely come back for another visit.

We stayed at the Flame Tree Cottages for 4 nights after a safari holiday in Kenya and Tanzania. It's an excellet small hotel, very quiet and perfect for relaxing. We stayed in the Guava room: very spacious and confortable; I much appreciated the breakfast served on our veranda (especially the delicious fresh fruits), what a perfect start ...
Concerning the restaurant, it's perfect for lunch (lots of delicious snacks to choose from); we had dinner only once and, even if the choice was quite limited, the food was really very good.
Another positive aspect is that, being a small place, the owner is always around: he came to welcome us when we arrived and was always available. What else to say, everything has been perfect and I definitely recommend this place. Bravo !!

As I don't like to stay in big resorts I found Flametree Cottages, a smaller private hotel with stone bungalows and a very nice owner. This hotel can't be booked via any booking sites but directly with the owners, which worked well for us. It's on the beach but the cottages aren't, the restaurant is and also some sun lounges.
There are several bungalows in the garden area with a pool in the middle. It's very nice and clean. There are different style cottages/rooms but all cost the same. We had one with a kind of a lounge when entering, with 2 chairs and kitchen facilities and a separate bed room. The other cottages are just the room and bathroom of course.
They all cost the same, so try to get the bigger one if you can. Ours was called Frango Pani. All cottages have a terrace in the front where you'll have breakfast, which is really lovely.

The owner Seif (spelling?) was very nice and helpful. Internet is $10 for the stay and worked fine except when everyone was online in the evening.
The restaurant prices are a bit high for the portions one gets and make sue you pay in Tsh not US$. Some staff speak better English than others. There could be a mix up with your food bill as they collect each order on a separate piece of paper and you pay in the end. To not loose track we paid as we went to keep track.
I recommend Flametree Cottages and would stay there again.

Room Tip: Try to get the bigger rooms, which are basically 2 rooms, front room and bedroom.

We stayed at the Flame Tree in May of this year, for 5 nights after our safari's in Kenya and Tanzania. It was a great way to unwind and relax after being on the go so much. We found the hotel to be very relaxed, but we did receive great service. Our room was a basic room, named Langi Langi, but it was a self contained cottage, on it's own. We had loads of space in the room, which had a small sitting area, kitchen, large bedroom and bathroom. The room was all that we needed, not fancy by any means, but very adequate, and CLEAN. Our breakfast was served each morning on our patio, which was a nice way to start the day. Food was good, but a limited selection for breakfast. We found the staff to be great, friendly and very caring. The manager Mohamed was very friendly and helpful.
Overall our experience at the Flame Tree was positive. Great location on the beach, and close to the small town.
I would recommend this hotel if you are looking for a reasonable rate, and good location. They have a nice, but small swimming pool, which offers an alternative to the beach.
We ate all our dinners at the hotel as well, which is served on the beach front. The food quality was good and there was a good selection for dinner.

We stayed here for about a week in Sept 2012 for business, though Flame Tree really made every single minute of spare time we had (not a lot) feel like a holiday!
We were shooting yoga videos on their property, with the lovely teachers that actually teach at Flame Tree on the beautiful roof-terrace overlooking the beach and sea. This is an objective review though. We gain nothing from this review, we simply want to thank the owners for their hospitality.

To me, they stand out for being really clean, really spacious (both rooms and garden) and really helpful. They're located smack on the beach, with a lovely beachfront dinner area. It's lit very nice in the evening and makes the perfect place for a romantic seaside dinner!

They also use a lot (if not only) of natural/local resources. Local staff, local food, local supplies. Which probably can't be said for the majority of the competition. 'Fast pace development' resorts are growing in the area and it's a pity that some Zanzibar visitors seek the comfort of established chains like Hilton a.o. because this hidden gem absolutely holds it's own against the competition.

The few small points of improvement could be a little more versatility in the breakfast. Perhaps in the way eggs are being prepared, or adding yoghurt/cereal to the menu... Every breakfast is accompanied by fresh fruit though.. :)
Also, some of the staff seem a tad 'slow'. Not in their pace, but in their ability to pick up hints or guest behavior. For example, I had my morning coffee delivered with my fresh fruit (which comes first) but the milk always came with my eggs (delivered second), while they saw from day one that I drank my coffee with milk... But then again: If that's the worst that happens on your holiday, you can't really complain:) And 'Pole Pole' (take it easy) ís the most common phrase on the island...

All in all this is a great (if not the best) place to stay for a couple of days after a big safari or climbing Mt Kili. Daily flights from/to Dar, Kili, Nairobi and more. I would definitely recommend Zanzibar over Mombasa (Kenya) and even for backpackers (which is my regular way of travel) this would be an ideal spot to hang out the last couple of days of your (big) trip, before heading home. Yoga enthusiasts can follow courses and classes in some of the nicest conditions imaginable, so there's hardly any reason not to visit this beautiful place!

Room Tip: All the rooms are great value. Some differ in price, but every single one is clean and spacious.

Myself and 5 friends recently stayed at Flame tree cottages for some quality relaxation time after climbing Kilimanjaro and this lovely little place didn't disappoint. We all loved the BBQ on the beach on our first night, with twinkling fairy lights overhead and candle light on the table, we enjoyed the most amazing steak, sausages and salad! The food was brilliant throughout our stay, our only comments being that the food service was a little slow at lunch time, with some items not being made available, perhaps a smaller menu would be better? The specials board however was excellent and the tempura of king prawns was also amazing!
The rooms were spacious and very clean - again some small maintence issues need to be addressed in the bathrooms, and we never had extremely hot water however it wasn't a huge issue as we enjoyed warm weather throughout our stay. We appreciated that the staff put our mosquito nets down in the evenings while we were out for dinner and also put the lamps on in our rooms ready for our return.
The staff were excellent, very approachable and friendly and it was also nice to see that the owners had such a front of house facing role. We enjoyed snorkelling and a sunset sail a real must do curtesy of the hotels little wooden boat and we also enjoyed sea fishing despite not catching a great deal.
Other members of the group enjoyed the hotels facilities such as yoga classes, massages and the swimming pool.
Although it was a good hour from the airport, we never ventured from the cottages once we arrived and loved that we could just step onto the beach and leave our belongings safe on the sun beds without being bothered by locals passing trying to sell you their items.
Despite it being right next to a large Hilton resort, and also in the middle of a little African village, you will certainly feel rest assured when you arrive at the gates!
We would all happily return to Flame tree and I'm sure none of us would have any hesitations in recommending it.

Room Tip: We stayed in Cardoman and Hibiscus was very nice too!
